USA TRAVEL GUIDE
USA Airports & Transfers: Choose the Right Gateway and First Journey

Choose an American arrival airport for the first overnight base and the route that follows, not only the cheapest international fare. A New York gateway is useful for a Northeast city journey; a Western road trip needs a different comparison of airport access, rental collection and the first drive. Allow for immigration, baggage, customs and the ground transfer before committing to an activity on arrival day. This page focuses on the first journey from the airport and the final return before departure. Domestic flights and intercity travel belong in the Getting Around guide. Airport construction, service patterns and fares change, so check the official airport page for your travel date.
Choose a gateway that fits the first base
Start with the first place you genuinely want to spend the night. Compare available airports by the complete arrival journey: terminal, public transport or road connection, the last leg to the accommodation and the hour at which you expect to arrive. A flight advertised for a metropolitan area can land far from the neighbourhood you selected. Keep the airport code beside every booking so a familiar city name does not conceal an airport change.
For a road trip, compare rental collection and the first realistic driving stage as part of the flight choice. An easy airport pickup does not make a long drive sensible after an overnight journey. A night near the gateway can help you begin rested, obtain supplies and review road conditions before continuing. Include that night in the budget instead of treating the road trip as starting the moment the aircraft lands.
For a route ending elsewhere, compare an arrival-and-departure combination with a return flight to the same gateway. The second option can involve an extra domestic flight or a long drive back. Compare the complete cost and time, including any one-way rental charge and the final overnight arrangement. The cheapest international ticket can be the more expensive itinerary once those pieces are included.

| Gateway | Public-transport option to compare | Check for the exact journey |
|---|---|---|
| JFK | AirTrain plus subway or LIRR connection | Separate fares, station and hotel last mile |
| Newark | Airport connection to the rail station | Current AirTrain works and substitute buses |
| LAX | FlyAway to Union Station or Van Nuys | Correct route, traffic and onward neighbourhood |
| SFO | AirTrain connection to BART | Current train route, hours and final station |
Understand the arrival and connection process
Check which airline operates each flight and which terminal it uses. A codeshare booking can display a familiar marketing airline while the aircraft and terminal belong to another operator. Use the operating carrier's details and review the airport's current connection instructions. Keep essential documents, medicines and the first night's necessities accessible in accordance with the applicable baggage rules.
The JFK connections guide explains that an international arrival connecting to a U.S. flight can require immigration, checked-baggage collection and recheck, and another security screening. Preclearance and other specific arrangements need their own instructions. Do not assume that a bag labelled to the final destination means there is nothing to do during the connection.
Separate tickets need particular care. Check whether the onward airline requires a complete new check-in and baggage drop, and whether the layover allows for delays in the first journey. An airport change adds another ground transfer. If the route only works when every stage runs at its minimum possible duration, choose a longer connection or an overnight stop before buying.
New York gateways: JFK and Newark
At JFK, AirTrain links the passenger terminals with the connections at Jamaica and Howard Beach. The airport's current AirTrain page distinguishes free travel within the airport from the charged connection through those stations. The posted single-ride AirTrain fare checked on 3 November 2026 is $8.75; the subway or Long Island Rail Road journey is a separate part of the route. Choose the connection that suits the actual hotel location.
Do not select a New York transfer simply because it ends at a familiar central station. Check the remaining journey, stairs or lifts, luggage and the service available at the arrival hour. For a group, compare the complete public-transport total with an official taxi or confirmed private transfer, while considering road traffic. Use the airport's designated pickup procedure rather than following an unsolicited offer in the terminal.
For Newark, check the AirTrain construction advisory, checked on 3 November 2026. During the posted 27 July–13 November 2026 work period, the rail-station connection changes Monday to Friday from 5:00 am to 3:00 pm. Travellers arriving at Newark Airport Train Station take a free shuttle bus directly to their airport terminal. Travellers leaving the airport take AirTrain to P4 and transfer to a free shuttle bus for the train station. The advisory says AirTrain operates normally on weekends and outside those hours. Recheck the notice for the actual travel date and allow for the affected connection.
Los Angeles: match the transfer to the neighbourhood
Los Angeles is spread out, so compare the airport transfer with the accommodation's actual address. A convenient arrival for Downtown may be less useful for a beach or San Fernando Valley base. Decide whether you need a direct ride, a bus with a final local connection or a rental pickup. Avoid assuming that every hotel described as being in Los Angeles is close to LAX.
The official LAX FlyAway service operates to Union Station and Van Nuys. Check the current schedule, fare and marked pickup area for the chosen route. A FlyAway ticket is not transport to every neighbourhood; add the onward journey from its terminal. The operator's FAQ also makes clear that road traffic affects travel time, so leave a margin on the return to the airport.
For taxis, app-based rides, hotel shuttles or rental vehicles, follow the airport's current ground-transport signs and instructions. Pickup arrangements can change during construction. Save the hotel address and booking details before leaving terminal Wi-Fi, then confirm the vehicle and destination. A slower but clearly understood transfer can be easier after a long flight than several unfamiliar changes with heavy bags.
San Francisco: separate AirTrain from the city journey
At SFO, the airport's AirTrain circulates around airport facilities, while BART provides a public-transport connection into the wider region. SFO's public-transit guidance explains access to the Garage G/BART station connection. Check the route and operating hours for the time you land rather than assuming the airport circulation service itself takes you to the hotel.
Compare the final station with your accommodation's exact location and the practical walk at the arrival hour. Bay Area destinations are not all on the same direct route, and a city name on a booking does not establish a simple last mile. Use the transport operator's current planner when choosing between rail, local connections and a direct ride.
If collecting a car, consider whether you need it during the first city stay. Keeping the rental outside city-only days may reduce parking and avoid driving immediately after a long flight. Check collection-branch hours and the transfer needed to reach it. For a departure after a regional drive, allow time to return the car, complete the rental and reach the correct terminal before the airline's deadlines.
Compare transfers for the actual party
Public transport can suit a traveller with manageable bags and accommodation near a useful stop. A direct ride may be more practical for several travellers, a late arrival, mobility equipment or a destination away from the main network. Compare the whole journey rather than declaring one method universally best. Keep an alternative in case a delayed flight arrives after the service you planned to use.
Ask specific accessibility questions before booking. Confirm the steps, lifts, boarding arrangement, vehicle space and the final approach to the accommodation. A general accessible label does not describe every transfer stage. Families should resolve child-restraint requirements with the provider rather than assuming a vehicle arriving on demand will have the right seat available.
For a prebooked transfer, read the meeting point, waiting policy, flight-delay procedure, passenger and luggage capacity, and how to contact the operator on arrival. Confirm whether the quoted price covers the full address. Keep the confirmation offline and use the known contact channel if plans change. A representative waiting in a terminal and a vehicle requested after arrival are different services.
Plan the departure journey before the final night
Choose the final overnight location around the next day's real departure. A late finish far from the airport can leave the morning dependent on traffic, a long connection or a rental return with little flexibility. Compare a final city night with an airport-area stay by the complete journey and the experience you would lose or gain, not only by room price.
Check the terminal, airline instructions and transport service again the day before travel. Use the airline's actual check-in and baggage deadlines; do not mistake a transfer's advertised duration for a recommendation about when to leave the hotel. Keep the documents and the correct airport code accessible, and leave enough margin for the least predictable stage of the journey.

FAQ
Is the cheapest arrival airport always the best choice?
No. Compare the full transfer, first night, onward route and final return. A distant airport or awkward late arrival can add costs and time that outweigh the airfare difference.
Does JFK AirTrain take me directly to Manhattan?
No. AirTrain connects the airport with stations such as Jamaica and Howard Beach, where the onward public-transport journey begins. Check both parts of the fare and the final route to your hotel.
Is LAX FlyAway a hotel transfer?
It operates to named terminals at Union Station and Van Nuys. Unless your accommodation is conveniently reached there, plan the remaining local journey or compare a direct ride.
Can I assume an international-to-domestic connection is airside?
No. Check the exact airport and airline procedure. An arrival can require immigration, baggage handling and another security screening; preclearance and other specific arrangements must be considered separately.
