The right document for a United States trip depends on your citizenship, passport, travel history, purpose and length of visit. A European departure airport does not establish eligibility for visa-free travel, and a long-validity visa does not tell you how long you may remain after a particular arrival. Begin with the official nationality and purpose checks, then book an itinerary you can complete within the admission you actually receive. The guidance below separates permission to travel, permission to enter and the record of your authorised stay. Check the linked government pages again before applying or departing; a commercial booking confirmation cannot settle an immigration question.

Travel Tip: Before committing to an inflexible route, make a one-page document timeline for each traveller: passport validity, ESTA or visa status, planned arrival and departure, and the admission record to check after arrival.

The Visa Waiver Program, or VWP, permits qualifying visitors from participating countries to make eligible tourism or business trips lasting no more than 90 days without obtaining a visitor visa. Eligibility includes more than the country printed on a passport. Use the Department of State VWP page to check passport requirements and travel-history restrictions. Türkiye is not listed among participating countries on the page checked for this guide.

If no visa-exempt arrangement applies to your nationality and circumstances, start with the relevant visa instructions rather than paying an agency to submit an unsuitable ESTA request. For an ordinary holiday, the visitor category is commonly B-2 or a combined B-1/B-2 visa. Someone studying, taking employment or travelling for another regulated purpose may need a different category. Describe the actual purpose consistently across applications, airline details and your arrival explanation.

Separate arrangements apply to citizens of Canada and Bermuda, who generally do not need a visitor visa for qualifying tourism visits. These arrangements are distinct from VWP travel. Check the passport, purpose and individual admissibility rules rather than assuming that everyone outside the VWP must apply for ESTA.

Before paying for an application or inflexible travel, check the Department of State’s current nationality and travel-document restrictions, reviewed on 3 November 2026. The guidance under Presidential Proclamation 10998 describes full or partial suspensions and specific exceptions. Its application can depend on the travel document, visa circumstances and effective-date rules. Follow the official instructions for your own situation; neither a general nationality list nor a booking confirmation settles individual eligibility.

For a family, make a separate document checklist for every person. A parent's eligibility does not automatically cover a child, and the shortest-validity passport can determine which bookings need attention first. Put the name shown on each travel document beside its flight reservation so that an avoidable spelling mismatch is found before departure.

Apply through the official ESTA service

ESTA is a travel authorisation connected with VWP travel, not a visa and not a promise of admission. Begin at the official CBP ESTA application. Check the domain before entering passport information or card details; search advertising and commercial assistance pages can appear alongside government results. Keep the application reference and retrieve the actual result rather than relying solely on a payment receipt or a forwarded email.

USAGov advises allowing for a decision that can take up to 72 hours. Do not make the application your final task at the departure gate. Its ESTA guidance explains that an approval is generally valid for two years, or until the passport expires if earlier. That validity allows possible future travel; it does not grant two years of continuous residence or remove the conditions attached to each visit.

Read the current fee in the official application before paying. Application and payment information can change, and third-party service charges are a separate issue. For a renewed passport or changed personal circumstances, check whether a fresh application is required rather than assuming the old approval transfers. Keep the passport used for authorisation clearly identified in your travel records.

Prepare a visitor-visa application

The Department of State visitor-visa instructions describe the DS-160 application and the embassy or consulate process. Follow the instructions for the post handling your application, including payment, photographs and any appointment. Interview availability differs by location and category. An attractive airfare is not a reason to assume a visa will be issued before its travel date.

Prepare a coherent plan: the broad route, intended visit length, where you expect to stay and how the trip will be funded. Supporting material should explain your real circumstances. A polished itinerary cannot replace eligibility, and a guide cannot predict the result of an individual application. Avoid presenting speculative reservations as proof that a decision has already been made.

For travel with friends or relatives, distinguish the host's address from the place where you will actually spend each part of the trip. You may combine several accommodation types without inventing a continuous hotel reservation. Once your passport is returned, review the visa's identity details and conditions before treating the application stage as finished.

Check passports and transit before choosing flights

Passport-validity rules depend on nationality and applicable agreements; do not apply a blanket six-month rule without checking the official exception list. VWP travel requires the qualifying electronic passport described by the government. Keep the physical passport accessible during the journey, and protect a separate copy of its identification page for assistance if the original is lost.

An international connection through an American airport can still create a U.S. documentation requirement. The official transit-visa guidance explains the transit category and alternatives that may apply to qualifying VWP travellers or holders of an appropriate valid visitor visa. Do not buy a connection on the assumption that remaining inside the airport removes every entry-document check.

Compare the connecting itinerary as a whole. Separate tickets can leave less practical protection when the first flight is late, while an airport change introduces a ground transfer and another check-in. Confirm the airline's document requirements and actual connection process before paying for a route whose price depends on a very short layover.

Prepare for arrival and customs

Carry your first accommodation address and contact details in a form you can read without mobile data. Be ready to explain your holiday route and intended departure plainly. An ESTA approval or a visa allows travel for examination at the border; CBP decides admission. Answer the questions asked accurately, and allow time for the arrival process before scheduling an essential onward appointment.

Food, plants and other agricultural products need particular attention. USDA APHIS says travellers must declare agricultural and wildlife products for inspection. Sealed packaging is not automatic permission to import an item. Before packing gifts or snacks, check the actual product and origin rules; keep packaging and receipts where they help identify what you are carrying.

Make the arrival day forgiving. A nonrefundable guided activity shortly after an international landing combines several uncertainties: immigration, baggage, customs, terminal movement and traffic. Staying near your arrival city first can be a practical choice when the next destination requires a long drive. The first night's location is part of entry-day planning, not merely a hotel preference.

Check the admission record and departure date

After arrival, use the official I-94 service to review your admission record where applicable. Check your name, passport details, class of admission and admit-until information. The USAGov I-94 explanation distinguishes the electronic record from advance provisional applications used for certain land arrivals. Airline passengers should not automatically purchase a provisional land-entry service they do not need.

Keep the document clocks separate. A visa may remain valid after a particular permitted stay ends, while ESTA's validity period also differs from a visit's admission limit. Put the actual departure deadline in your calendar and keep transport plans consistent with it. If information appears wrong, use official assistance channels promptly instead of editing an itinerary to fit an assumption.

A side trip to Canada, Mexico or a nearby island is not a general way to reset a VWP stay. If you plan a multi-country journey, check the applicable rule before using the border crossing to support an extended American itinerary. A longer rental agreement, hotel discount or remote-work arrangement does not itself create permission to remain or work in the United States.

FAQ

Is ESTA the same as a U.S. visa?

No. ESTA is the authorisation used by eligible Visa Waiver Program travellers. A person using an appropriate valid visa for its permitted purpose generally does not also obtain ESTA for that journey.

Does a two-year ESTA approval allow a two-year stay?

No. Authorisation validity and the permitted length of an individual visit are different. VWP visits are limited to eligible stays of 90 days or less, and admission remains a border decision.

Can I transit through the USA without checking entry documents?

No. Check the official transit and nationality rules before booking. A connection through a U.S. airport can require ESTA eligibility or an appropriate visa even when the final destination is elsewhere.

Where should I check my allowed departure date?

Review the actual admission information after entry, including the I-94 record where applicable. Do not substitute the expiry date printed on your visa or ESTA approval for the permitted stay.

Do nationality-specific entry restrictions apply to every traveller in the same way?

No. Check the current Department of State restriction notice and the responsible embassy or consulate instructions for your passport, travel document and visa circumstances. The rules include specific scope, effective dates and exceptions; a general holiday guide cannot decide an individual case.
