Bali Travel Costs & Money: Build a Practical Holiday Budget

A Bali budget is most useful when it shows what you are paying for and how the calculation changes with your travelling group. Accommodation, transport and the number of paid activities usually matter more than a generic claim that the island is cheap. Start with your route, obtain actual quotations for the expensive items, and use a daily allowance for the parts you can control.
Budget in Indonesian rupiah
The local currency is the Indonesian rupiah, abbreviated IDR or Rp. Keep your working budget in rupiah so that accommodation quotes, transfers and meals can be compared consistently. If your bank account uses another currency, check the rate and fees at the time you pay. A currency-converter result is an estimate, not necessarily the amount that will appear on your statement.
Read the zeros carefully. A difference between 50,000 and 500,000 is significant even when both figures initially look unfamiliar. Ask whether a quoted amount is per person, per room, per vehicle or for the whole booking. For anything important, keep a written confirmation that includes the date, number of guests and inclusions.
Use a transparent daily budget model
The following example is an illustrative planning exercise, not surveyed Bali market prices. It shows how to allocate a budget for two adults sharing one room. Replace each assumption with your own live quote before booking. The room allowance is divided between the two travellers; meals and activities are per person.
On smaller screens, swipe or scroll horizontally to read the full table.
| Item | Assumed group allowance | Per adult per day |
|---|---|---|
| Room | IDR 1,000,000 per room per night | IDR 500,000 |
| Meals and non-alcoholic drinks | IDR 300,000 per adult | IDR 300,000 |
| Local transport | IDR 400,000 shared by two | IDR 200,000 |
| Activities | IDR 250,000 per adult | IDR 250,000 |
| Subtotal | IDR 2,500,000 for two adults | IDR 1,250,000 |
In this model, seven nights cost IDR 17,500,000 for the two adults before flights, insurance, entry charges, shopping and a contingency. The arithmetic is deliberately visible: IDR 2,500,000 multiplied by seven. A solo traveller using the same room and transport assumptions would carry those costs alone. A family must replace the meal, ticket, room and car-capacity assumptions rather than simply multiplying the adult figure.
Seven nights normally span eight calendar dates. This example includes seven daily allowances; add meals, transport and activities for any extra arrival or departure time.
Separate entry charges from daily spending
Eligible travellers using the B1 visa-on-arrival route should budget its stated government fee of IDR 500,000 per person. The Bali tourist levy is IDR 150,000 for foreign tourists unless a verified exemption applies. The All Indonesia arrival declaration is free. These are three distinct tasks; payment for one does not settle the others.
A traveller who needs a different visa, an extension or professional application help will have a different total. Keep government charges separate from optional agent fees and payment processing costs. Read visa and entry requirements, the Bali tourist levy and the All Indonesia arrival-card guide before using an entry-cost figure in your final budget.
Compare the full accommodation cost
A lower room rate may be offset by a location that needs repeated car journeys. Compare the price with your intended daily movements, not just the appearance of the room. A walkable base can reduce dependence on transport, while a remote villa may make sense if staying at the property is the purpose of the trip.
Check whether breakfast, taxes, service charges, an extra bed, a cot or airport pickup are included. Confirm the final price for your actual guest count and dates. An advertised starting rate may describe a different room or a date outside your travel period. Read the cancellation deadline and payment currency before you decide that two offers are equivalent.
Use Where to Stay to choose the area, then Hotels to compare named properties. The area decision usually belongs earlier in the budget than the final room selection.
Price transport as a route
Compare a transfer, a point-to-point app ride and a car with a driver according to the same journey. A day arrangement needs an agreed duration, stops, return destination, overtime terms, parking and toll policy. A cheap headline price is difficult to assess without these details. Do not assume an airport transfer includes an extra sightseeing stop or a different destination from the one quoted.
For island trips, count the mainland transfer, the correct boat ticket, island transport, luggage charges and the return connection. A ticket to a harbour may leave a substantial onward journey. If you need a child seat or suitable life jackets, ask specifically and get confirmation. See Getting Around and ferries and island transfers.
Carry useful cash and a payment backup
A card is convenient where accepted, but keep enough cash for small purchases and situations in which a terminal or connection is unavailable. Carry a reserve separately from your day wallet. Keep a second payment method accessible without storing all cards, cash and identification in the same bag.
Ask the total before authorising a payment. Where a card machine offers a choice of currencies, compare the displayed conversion and your own card's terms rather than automatically accepting a familiar home-currency amount. Check whether your bank charges for foreign purchases or cash withdrawals. Retain receipts for larger transactions until the statement has settled.
At an ATM, cover the keypad, inspect the machine and take time to retrieve both cash and card. If a withdrawal fails or the card is retained, use the bank's verified contact details from its official website or your banking app. Do not rely on a telephone sticker attached to the machine.
Use licensed money changers
Indonesia's travel advice and Bali's official tourist code recommend licensed exchange services. Check the business's licence and official Bank Indonesia QR identification, compare the net amount you will receive, and count it before leaving the counter. An unusually attractive displayed rate is not useful if an unexplained fee or short payment changes the result. FCDO guidance on exchange and payment scams.
Keep the exchange receipt and avoid handing cash back after you have counted it unless you understand the reason. Take your time, especially after a long flight. You can make a smaller first exchange for immediate needs and compare options later when rested.
Protect the budget without removing the purpose of the trip
Choose the experiences that matter most, then build ordinary days around them. Fewer accommodation changes can reduce transfer costs and lost time. A flexible activity day may prevent you paying twice after a weather cancellation. Check refund terms before choosing between similar tours rather than assuming all operators handle disruption alike.
Keep a separate contingency for an extra mainland night, a changed transfer or urgent assistance. It should not be money already allocated to food for the final days. Insurance, the correct activity cover and access to emergency funds are part of the travel plan. For a stay measured in weeks, use the separate longer-stay planning guide, where deposits, utilities and cancellation exposure need a different calculation.
Frequently asked questions
How much money do I need per day in Bali?
Start with your room, group size, transport route and paid activities. This page's IDR 1,250,000 per adult daily model is a hypothetical two-adult budgeting exercise, not a claim about average Bali prices; replace it with actual quotes.
Are the Bali tourist levy and visa fee the same?
No. The levy, the visa and the free All Indonesia declaration are separate requirements. Your nationality, purpose and any approved exemption determine the applicable charges.
Should I bring only cash?
Carry useful cash plus a backup payment method. Check card acceptance, bank fees and withdrawal limits, and keep some funds separately from your day wallet.
Is a remote villa always better value?
Compare the final room price with transport, meals, inclusions and the way you want to spend your days. A lower nightly rate can be offset by repeated journeys.
