I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, code DPS, is Bali's main arrival gateway. It is in the Tuban/Kuta area rather than beside every place marketed as a southern Bali resort. Choose your first base and transfer together: an inexpensive flight landing late can still leave a demanding journey if the accommodation is far away or difficult to find.

Choose a sensible first night

Compare the flight's arrival time with your energy, the group's needs and the accommodation's late-check-in arrangements. Continuing directly to your main base avoids repacking, but a nearby first night can be useful after a long journey or before an onward plan. There is no universal answer; the key is to decide deliberately rather than discovering the distance after landing.

Check the exact address, entrance and map pin. A property described as Ubud, Uluwatu or Canggu may sit outside the area a visitor imagines from the name. Ask where the car can stop and how luggage reaches the room. Steps, narrow lanes and late-night access matter for families and travellers with reduced mobility.

Prepare before arrival

Settle your visa and entry requirements, complete the free All Indonesia declaration within its permitted window, and check the separate Bali tourist levy. Keep the confirmations accessible offline. If your international border entry is elsewhere in Indonesia before a domestic connection to DPS, prepare the documents for that actual route.

Save your transfer confirmation, meeting instructions and verified operator contact before the flight. Confirm whether waiting is based on scheduled or actual landing and how a delay should be reported. Keep the accommodation's contact handy in case the driver needs help finding the entrance.

For the airport's own current information, use I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport / InJourney. Similar-looking airport guide domains may be independent travel sites. Your airline remains the source for check-in, baggage and the actual flight schedule.

Compare offers using the same passenger count, luggage, destination and arrival time. Ask whether tolls, parking and waiting are included. A larger car may be necessary even when the number of passengers fits a standard vehicle, particularly with checked bags, a pushchair or mobility equipment.

Use operator-specific app instructions

Grab's DPS information identifies a GrabCar Lounge at the international arrivals terminal and instructs passengers to use the booking's meeting directions. It also states that GrabBike is not available for airport pickup. Do not assume every Grab service visible elsewhere in Bali can collect from the terminal. Grab's DPS airport guidance.

Gojek lists GoCar Instant at DPS and explains that an additional location fee can apply, separately from tolls and parking. Check the current app's breakdown and pickup instructions. A Gojek booking is not a Grab booking, and one operator's lounge description should not be used as directions for another. Gojek's location-fee guidance.

Match the driver and vehicle to the confirmed booking. If approached by someone claiming to represent an app, verify the arrangement in the actual app or through the official counter/channel. Avoid accepting an unexplained change that leaves you without a clear operator or price.

Make meeting the driver unambiguous

Agree which terminal, exit or operator meeting area applies to your arrival. Domestic and international instructions may differ. If a driver uses a name sign, know whose name will be displayed and keep the operator's contact for verification. Avoid sending passport images to a newly introduced account merely to arrange a meeting.

If you cannot find the driver, use the verified contact on the original confirmation and stay at a clear public meeting point. Tell the operator exactly where you are. Do not walk between unfamiliar pickup areas while the driver is heading towards your previous location.

Allow for the ordinary time needed to leave the aircraft, complete the relevant arrival process and collect luggage. A landing time is not the same as the moment you are ready at the kerb. The waiting policy should account for your actual arrival circumstances.

Confirm luggage, children and access needs

State large bags, surfboards, a wheelchair or other unusual items when booking. Ask for the actual vehicle's usable space, not just a generic label. A seven-seat car does not necessarily hold seven adults and their checked luggage comfortably.

For a child seat, confirm the type, suitability and installation arrangement. Do not assume a request has been accepted unless the provider confirms it. For reduced mobility, describe the assistance and transfer movements required, including whether the traveller can step into a car and whether equipment folds. Use Accessibility to structure those questions.

Plan for traffic and the final road

Road conditions, congestion, ceremonies and weather can change the journey. Treat online times as estimates and ask the accommodation or operator about the date and departure you are considering. Avoid booking an expensive activity soon after an international arrival, especially if a long transfer or luggage delay would cause a missed reservation.

If the property has a narrow final lane, ask how the transfer reaches it. A car may need to stop short and an alternative may be needed for bags or mobility requirements. The correct arrival plan includes that final section, not only the main-road destination.

Arrange the departure separately

Use your airline's current check-in and bag-drop requirements and work backwards from them. Add a road buffer appropriate to your starting base. Do not reuse the arrival journey's duration as a guaranteed return time; traffic patterns and weather can differ.

If returning from Nusa Penida, Lembongan or another island, allow a mainland buffer where possible before a critical international flight. Boats can be delayed or cancelled. Check the island-transfer guide before arranging a same-day chain that depends on several independent providers.

Check Nyepi and flight disruption

Nyepi closes ordinary transport and the airport. The official holiday date for 2027 is 8 March, but the precise operating closure and your flight schedule must be checked with the airport and airline. Do not schedule an airport transfer across the closure simply because a booking calendar allows a date to be selected.

If the flight changes, contact both accommodation and transfer provider through verified channels. Keep the revised itinerary and written confirmation of the new pickup. For movement after arrival, use Getting Around; airport transfer choices solve one journey, while a sensible base and daily route solve the rest of the holiday.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bali airport in Denpasar?

The airport uses the DPS code and is often called Denpasar airport, but it is in the Tuban/Kuta area of Badung. Check the actual distance and road route to your chosen base.

Can I book Grab from Bali airport?

Grab publishes DPS airport car services and meeting information. Use the current booking's pickup instructions; Grab specifically states that GrabBike is not available for airport pickup.

How long does the airport transfer take?

It depends on the exact address, traffic, weather and local access. Obtain a date-specific estimate and allow a buffer rather than relying on a universal time.

Will a standard car fit my family and bags?

Give the operator the exact passengers, luggage and child-seat or mobility requirements. A passenger-seat count alone does not establish luggage space.

Can I arrive on Nyepi?

The airport closes for Nyepi. Confirm the precise closure and flight schedule with your airline and the airport before booking transport.
