An island transfer from Bali is a chain: accommodation to harbour, check-in, sailing, arrival port and onward transport. Compare that complete journey before choosing the lowest boat fare. Different ports, intermediate calls and transfer inclusions can make two tickets with the same island name very different products.

Choose the route before the ticket

Start with the exact destination and whether you need to carry a vehicle. A passenger fast boat to Nusa Penida or Lembongan is different from a vehicle-ferry journey to Lombok or Java. A connection to a Gili island also needs a plan for the arrival side, especially when your accommodation is not beside the landing point.

The Indonesian transport ministry identifies Sanur as a connection point with Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. Other operators depart from places such as Serangan or Padangbai for their particular routes. Do not travel to a harbour based only on an island's name; use the actual ticket and operator's instructions. Transport Ministry's Sanur connection overview.

ASDP's official information confirms the Padangbai–Lembar and Ketapang–Gilimanuk routes. Use current operator and port information for tickets and operating conditions, not historical promotional fares. A ferry route's existence does not establish a guaranteed departure time or a short queue on the day.

Calculate the whole transfer day

Work backwards from check-in using your actual accommodation address. Include a road buffer, finding the operator's desk and the required check-in time. On arrival, count baggage collection and the onward transfer. A timetable's boat time is only one part of the day.

Ask whether a hotel's pickup is included, shared or private and which areas it covers. A shared transfer may make other pickups; an excluded area may require another arrangement. Confirm where the return car meets you and what happens if the boat is late.

If changing accommodation, check luggage storage and check-in times at both ends. Keep medication, documents, money and a change of essentials in a small bag you can manage safely. Do not place everything important in luggage you cannot access during the crossing.

Read the operator's actual route

A service advertised between Bali and the Gilis may call at several ports. BlueWater Express's published schedules show ordered port calls and describe their timings as approximate and dependent on conditions. Read the direction and season matching your ticket, and distinguish the boarding time from the estimated arrival. BlueWater Express schedules.

Confirm the named operating company when booking through an agent. Keep both the order reference and the operator's accepted booking confirmation. If a reseller changes the service, ask for the new operator, vessel route and terms rather than assuming the substitution is identical.

Confirm luggage and special equipment in writing

Read the conditions attached to your own ticket for weight, number of pieces and oversized items. Ask specifically about surfboards, diving bags, pushchairs, mobility equipment and batteries. A general airline baggage allowance does not transfer automatically to a boat.

Where an operator's FAQ and carriage terms differ, request written confirmation for the exact booking. Ekajaya's published FAQ and terms provide an example of why this matters: do not build a packing plan around a single unconfirmed number. Clarify charges, restrictions and responsibility for damage before paying. Ekajaya carriage terms; Ekajaya FAQ.

Protect belongings against spray and handling, and use a bag you can identify. Keep electronics and passports in suitable dry storage. Ask before boarding where hand luggage may be kept so it does not block an aisle or exit.

Check safety and personal suitability

Sea conditions can change quickly. Ask about the vessel, passenger capacity, life jackets, safety briefing and the day's departure decision. Children's life jackets need to be suitable for the actual child; do not assume adult equipment is an adequate replacement.

If pregnant, recovering from injury or living with a condition affected by rough motion, discuss the journey with an appropriate healthcare professional and the operator before booking. Ask about boarding steps, gaps and movement aboard. A modern terminal photograph does not establish a step-free route into every vessel.

Keep children supervised, follow crew instructions and avoid crowding boarding areas. If the conditions or arrangements are unsuitable, do not proceed simply because the ticket is non-refundable. See Health & Safety for the wider marine precautions and Accessibility for detailed access questions.

Understand cancellations and missed connections

Read the distinction between a cancellation by you and one caused by weather, port authority instruction or the operator. Confirm who processes a refund, which charges remain and whether a replacement sailing is subject to availability. An offer to reschedule may not solve your onward-flight problem.

Keep a mainland buffer before a critical international departure where possible. Ekajaya advises allowing a buffer before onward travel and disclaims consequential losses in its terms. Treat that as a reason to examine your full itinerary and insurance, not as a guarantee that any particular buffer removes all risk.

If a service is cancelled, contact the named operator through verified channels and obtain the options in writing. A slower ferry or different port can involve substantial road travel and should be evaluated as a new journey, including its safety and arrival arrangements.

Check holidays and the return trip

Nyepi stops ordinary movement in Bali. The official government holiday date for 2027 is 8 March; confirm the actual port and operator closure arrangements around it. A conflicting date on an operator's general calendar should be clarified against the official holiday announcement before you book. Official 2027 holiday calendar.

For any busy holiday period, allow for queues and road changes on both sides. Check local departure times and any time-zone difference when combining Bali with Java. Reconfirm the return harbour, meeting point and accommodation transfer rather than assuming they mirror the outward trip.

Decide whether the island needs an overnight stay

A day trip can suit one focused activity, but time spent at the two harbours and on the roads reduces the island time. An overnight stay may allow a calmer pace, while also adding accommodation and another weather-dependent travel day. Choose according to what you want to do, not a promise to cover every famous viewpoint.

Use Day Trips and Itineraries to compare the choices. Keep the mainland transport plan and airport departure connected to the boat booking so the entire route remains workable.

Frequently asked questions

Is a fast-boat ticket the same as a complete hotel transfer?

No. Check pickup coverage, shared or private transport, harbour check-in, arrival port and onward transport. The boat fare may cover only the sailing.

Which port should I use for Nusa Penida or Lembongan?

Sanur is a major connection point, but choose by the actual operator and ticket. Confirm both the mainland and island port before travelling.

How much luggage can I take?

Use your ticket's written allowance and ask about oversized or specialist equipment. If FAQ and terms disagree, obtain confirmation for the exact booking rather than choosing the larger number.

Can I return by boat and catch an international flight the same day?

That creates a risk from weather, delays and the road transfer. Allow a mainland buffer where possible and examine the operator's terms and insurance.

Is Nyepi on 8 or 9 March 2027?

The Indonesian government's holiday calendar lists 8 March 2027. Confirm the detailed sailing closure with the operator and clarify any contradictory operator date before booking.
