Bali is easier to navigate when your first few practical decisions are settled before the flight. Keep the accommodation address, arrival paperwork and airport meeting plan accessible without relying on a new mobile connection. Once those essentials are in place, leave enough flexibility to choose activities around the weather and the neighbourhood where you are staying.

Complete the essentials before you fly

Check passport and visa requirements for your nationality and purpose. Complete the free All Indonesia integrated arrival declaration during its permitted pre-arrival window, and check the separate Bali tourist levy. Store the confirmations where you can retrieve them offline. These are separate requirements; an accommodation booking or a payment receipt for one task does not replace another.

Confirm your first night's address and contact details, not only the property's name. Save a map pin and written directions if a private lane or similarly named property could confuse the driver. Ask the accommodation how a late check-in is handled and whether reception is staffed for your arrival. See Visa & Entry, All Indonesia and the Bali tourist levy for detailed instructions.

Make an offline arrival folder

Keep your passport details, visa, onward flight, accommodation confirmation and insurer's assistance number in a secure offline folder. Add the airport transfer's exact meeting instructions, driver's or operator's verified contact and the booking reference. A screenshot of an app itinerary can be useful, but retain the original confirmation as well.

Keep a printed or separately stored summary of the most important details in case your phone runs out of power or is lost. Avoid keeping all access to money and documents behind a single device or account. Travel companions should know where the shared booking information is held.

Choose connectivity by what you need it to do

Compare a local SIM, a travel eSIM and roaming using your actual phone, trip length and need for calls. Check that the handset is unlocked, that it supports the product and that the plan can be activated as intended. Consider whether hotspot use is allowed and whether an allowance is total-trip data or a daily allocation. A low headline price can describe a plan that does not meet your needs.

A data-only eSIM can support maps and messaging apps when there is a connection, but it does not necessarily provide an ordinary local voice number or standard mobile calls. Check how you would make an urgent voice call and contact your accommodation if the data service fails. Do not assume that being able to send a message proves an emergency number can be dialled through that product.

Indonesian Customs explains that foreign tourists can use an overseas device with an Indonesian SIM through operator registration for up to 90 days; roaming and longer-term device import registration are different cases. Buy from a legitimate provider, have the required identification available, and check the registration and validity terms. Official IMEI and tourist-device guidance.

Pack for coast, temples and uplands

Use lightweight clothes for the warm coastal climate, with something appropriate for cooler upland conditions and strong indoor air-conditioning. Bring sun protection, a practical hat and footwear suited to the surfaces you plan to walk. A separate pair with grip is more useful for wet paths than relying on beach sandals everywhere.

For temple visits, bring modest clothing and be ready to use the required sarong and sash. Requirements and visitor boundaries vary, so ask locally rather than treating a sarong as permission to enter every area. Keep a small bag that lets you secure loose items around monkeys without needing to feed or touch them. The temple etiquette guide explains respectful access and photography.

Protect electronics and documents from rain, spray and sand. Check the socket and voltage requirements for your own chargers before packing an adapter. Carry essential medication in its labelled packaging and confirm its legality in Indonesia before travel, especially products containing controlled ingredients. A foreign prescription does not make every substance legal to import.

Keep the daily bag simple

Carry only the money and valuables you need, while keeping access to required identification. If you are unsure which original document must accompany you, check official travel advice before substituting a copy. Protect a passport against water and theft rather than leaving it loose in a beach bag.

Plan fewer, better-connected journeys

Distances on a map do not fully describe Bali travel. Congestion, narrow roads, ceremonies and weather can change a day's practical reach. Group nearby activities and avoid building a schedule around a string of precisely timed drives across different regions. Ask your driver about the order before making several non-refundable reservations.

For an airport transfer, match the vehicle to your passengers and luggage, agree the destination and follow the current meeting instructions. For boat trips, identify the harbour and operator, not merely the island name. Read Airports & Transfers, Getting Around and island transfers for the detailed choices.

Do not make scooter rental the default solution to traffic. Correct licensing for the vehicle, an applicable permit, helmet, competence and insurance matter. If those conditions are not met, plan around a car, taxi or driver and choose a base that reduces unnecessary journeys.

Handle everyday payments clearly

Keep some useful rupiah cash and a second payment method. Confirm whether a quote is per person or per vehicle, and whether taxes, service, parking or equipment are included. For a larger activity, get the final amount and cancellation terms in writing. Keep the receipt until the payment has settled.

At a shop, market or service counter, take time to understand the total. Use licensed money changers and verified bank contacts if a payment problem arises. A small daily cash allowance can make ordinary spending easier to track without carrying the whole trip budget. The money guide provides a transparent budget model.

Follow a considerate daily routine

Dress with awareness of the setting, ask before photographing people and leave space for ceremonies and worship. Do not step into planted fields or blocked-off areas to improve a photograph. Follow local waste, refill and accommodation arrangements and choose legal services that can explain what is included.

Nyepi needs advance preparation because ordinary movement and services stop. Ask your accommodation about meals and supplies, and avoid booking transfers across the closure. More broadly, check locally when a ceremony changes road access or opening arrangements rather than assuming every day follows the same pattern.

Know your backup plan

Save your insurer's assistance contact, the accommodation's verified number and the relevant useful contacts. Share a remote outing or boat plan with someone who knows when to expect you back. If you lose a card or phone, use the issuer's official channel and secure your accounts promptly.

For illness, animal bites, swimming decisions or suspected poisoning, use the health and safety guide and seek appropriate help rather than waiting for an itinerary gap. Practical preparation should make the trip easier to adjust; it should never become a reason to continue with an activity when conditions have changed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need both a visa and the All Indonesia declaration?

The declaration and immigration permission are separate requirements. Check the visa route for your nationality and purpose, complete the free integrated declaration and check the separate Bali levy.

Will a data-only eSIM let me call emergency services?

Do not assume it provides ordinary mobile voice calls. Check the product's calling support and arrange another way to make urgent calls if necessary.

What should I carry for temple visits?

Wear modest clothing and be ready to use the site's required sarong and sash. Follow staff instructions and sacred-area boundaries; clothing alone does not permit entry everywhere.

Should I book a full itinerary before arriving?

Reserve the things that need advance booking, but leave weather-sensitive days and nearby activities flexible. Confirm return transport and cancellation terms for the important outings.
