Things to Do in Bali: Food, Arts and Hands-On Experiences

The most useful Bali activity is one that fits your interests, location and time. A cooking class, a performance and a village walk offer different kinds of participation. Read beyond the photograph and ask what happens during the session: who teaches it, how many people attend, how much travel is involved and what is included in the price.

Choose an experience for what you will actually do

This page concentrates on experiences. Use Attractions for temples and specific sights, Parks & Outdoor Activities for terrain and routes, and the separate surfing and diving and snorkelling pages for those activities. The distinction helps you avoid booking three products that repeat the same sightseeing loop.

Take a cooking class that teaches the meal

A good cooking session helps you recognise ingredients and methods you will encounter later in the trip. Ask how much you will prepare yourself and whether the class is shared, private or mainly a demonstration. A market visit can add context, but it also adds an early start and transport; make sure it is part of the actual session you are reserving.

Ubud has classes linked to restaurant kitchens and village settings, while Tanjung Benoa offers another southern option through Bumbu Bali's restaurant and cooking-school information. Nusantara also describes culinary activities associated with its Ubud restaurant. These are different locations and programmes, not interchangeable versions of one standard class.

Tell the organiser about allergies and dietary requirements before paying. A vegetarian dish can still involve fish, shrimp paste or shared equipment. Check the number of dishes, language of instruction, heat and knife use, recipe notes, lunch and the return transfer. If travelling with children, confirm their real role instead of assuming an adult class will be adapted on arrival.

Watch dance or music with enough context to follow it

A performance is more engaging when you know its name, story and setting. Ask whether the programme features dance with gamelan, a Kecak presentation or another form, and whether a short explanation is provided. Do not assume every show has the same instrumentation or religious purpose.

Ubud's arts venues and the Uluwatu area are familiar starting points, but programmes, tickets and dates should be checked with the actual venue. ARMA describes a wider visual and performing-arts role; museum admission does not automatically include a scheduled event. At a temple venue, check site admission separately from the performance ticket.

Allow time to find the venue, use the toilet and sit without blocking another person's view. Follow photography rules and avoid flash. If the setting is religious, worshippers and performers take priority over a visitor's camera position. The culture guide gives background; Festivals & Events deals with dated programmes.

Learn a craft from the process, not just the souvenir

A practical workshop can make the difference between buying an object and understanding some of its work. Textiles, natural dyes, ceramics, silver or carving all involve different skills. Choose a task that can realistically be completed in the available time, and ask which stages the teacher will prepare beforehand.

Threads of Life identifies separate Ubud retail, gallery and dye-studio locations. A shop visit is therefore not the same booking as a class at the studio. Jenggala lists pottery activities separately from its homeware retail. Confirm the location, materials and dates with the organiser rather than arriving at a storefront expecting a session.

For ceramics, ask about drying, firing, glazing and when the piece can be collected or shipped. For metal or carving, check tool use and whether protective equipment is provided. Keep the maker's name and material information with the object. A workshop experience does not establish that every item in the adjoining shop was made by that teacher.

Walk with someone who can explain the working landscape

A guided village or rice-landscape walk is valuable when the guide explains water, crops, daily work and the route through the community. Ask for that focus when booking. A product advertised mainly around photo stops, swings or cafés may provide a different experience, even if it includes the same broad place name.

Choose a route close to the base where you are staying. A local walk near Ubud, a managed Jatiluwih route and a Munduk plantation walk involve different geography and terrain. Ask about the hardest part, shade, stairs and the finish. The guide should be able to explain whether the route crosses private land and how permission or admission is handled.

Stay on the agreed path, let farming continue around you and ask before photographing someone at work. Rice is not always bright green, and a working landscape does not need to match a publicity image to be interesting. For route preparation and weather alternatives, continue to the outdoor guide.

Choose a yoga, movement or spa session for your own comfort

Bali has many yoga, movement and spa offerings, particularly around established visitor areas. Read the actual class description and choose for experience, intensity and practical comfort. A beginner should not book a demanding session simply because the setting is attractive, and a scenic studio photograph does not show the instructor's approach.

Ask about class size, language, ventilation, mats and changing facilities. Tell the teacher about relevant limitations before the session starts, and stop if an activity feels inappropriate. For a spa treatment, discuss pressure, products and allergies directly. Do not treat a tourism activity as a substitute for individual medical advice or accept promises to cure a condition.

Allow time afterwards rather than rushing to a long transfer or an exposed beach outing. A short session close to your accommodation can serve the holiday better than crossing the island for a branded package. Check cancellations, transport and whether the quoted amount includes the advertised treatment duration and any extras.

Cycle a route that suits your ability and traffic tolerance

A cycle outing should be chosen for the actual surface, traffic and effort. Some products use village lanes or rice-landscape routes; others include substantial road sections or long descents. “Downhill” does not mean effortless or risk-free: braking, junctions and uneven surfaces still require control.

Ask for the route profile, the length spent in traffic and the youngest or least experienced rider the organiser can safely accommodate. Confirm helmets, bike condition, size, brakes and the plan if someone cannot continue. For an e-bike, ask how assistance works and whether you will be expected to manage a heavy bicycle without power.

Check the pickup and finish, including any van transfer and lunch. Keep weather and heat in the decision, and do not use an unfamiliar road route as a first attempt to learn to ride. Families should confirm a suitable child arrangement rather than assuming that a generic bike booking includes it.

Check the real booking, inclusions and cancellation

For every activity, compare the exact product, date, meeting point and cancellation terms. A transport-only product is not a guided experience, and a general comparison page is not a reserved place. Keep the operator contact and the full address offline in case a mobile connection fails.

Build the day around one main session. Add a nearby meal or short visit only when the timing works. If weather or access changes, choose an alternative with the organiser rather than trying to force the original itinerary. The transport guide explains the practical journey questions.

Frequently asked questions

What is a useful first activity in Bali?

Choose a nearby cooking class, performance or guided local walk that fits your interests. Keep the arrival day flexible and reserve the activity for a time when transport and energy are predictable.

Does a market visit mean a cooking class is hands-on?

No. Ask how much cooking you will do, which tasks are shared and whether the market visit, meal and transfers are included.

Can I take a craft workshop just before flying home?

Check finishing and collection time first. Pottery may need firing or glazing, and shipping can cost extra or take longer than your stay.

Are wellness sessions medical treatments?

A tourism class or spa treatment should not be treated as individual medical care. Choose appropriate intensity and discuss relevant health concerns with a qualified clinician when needed.
