Longer Stays in Bali: Monthly Budgets, Housing & Practical Checks

A longer stay in Bali changes the questions that matter. A villa that looks appealing for three nights may be inconvenient for a month, and a low monthly headline price may exclude the services that make the property usable. Before choosing a neighbourhood, decide why you are staying, what permission your activities require and what you need to live comfortably on an ordinary Tuesday.
Match the purpose of the stay to your permission
A tourist booking, an accommodation contract and an immigration permission are different things. Extending a holiday is not automatically permission to work, run a business or create commercial content. Check the rules that apply to your nationality, income arrangements and intended activities before committing to a lengthy rental.
Indonesia has different visa and residence routes. Ngurah Rai Immigration describes E33G as a limited-stay route for eligible people working remotely for an employer outside Indonesia; it is not blanket permission for every freelancer or for paid work for Indonesian clients. Use the official E33G explanation and current e-Visa requirements rather than a property's description of itself as suitable for remote workers.
For tourism, compare your permitted length of stay with your actual arrival and departure dates. Do not confuse the period in which a visa can be used to enter Indonesia with the period you may stay after entry. If an extension is necessary, build time for the application and required office attendance. The visa guide explains why an online application does not mean every step is remote.
Choose a base for everyday life
Start with the area rather than a single attractive listing. Walkability, food choices, noise, access to medical care and the cost of routine transport affect a month much more than a room's decorative details. Check the actual street and access lane, not only a pin marking the general neighbourhood. An uphill or unlit final section can be important if you will return after dark.
For a slower stay, consider how often you want to change environments. Ubud offers an inland base; Sanur gives a coastal setting; busier southern neighbourhoods create different trade-offs between access, traffic and evening activity. These are starting points for comparison, not promises that every address in an area has the same character. Use the area guide to narrow the choice, then investigate the specific property.
If possible, book a shorter initial stay with clear terms and inspect longer-term options after arrival. A trial period lets you check noise, drainage, internet performance and the route to daily essentials. The right sequence can be more valuable than securing the lowest advertised monthly rate from a photograph.
Build a monthly budget from explicit assumptions
The following is a hypothetical allocation for one adult staying 30 nights, not a survey of Bali rents or living costs. Its purpose is to expose assumptions. Replace the housing figure with a real final quote and adjust transport, food and activities to your own habits. It excludes international flights, immigration costs, insurance, deposits and emergencies.
On smaller screens, swipe or scroll horizontally to read the full table.
| Category | Assumption | Monthly allocation |
|---|---|---|
| Housing | One agreed 30-night price | IDR 15,000,000 |
| Food and non-alcoholic drinks | IDR 200,000 × 30 days | IDR 6,000,000 |
| Transport | Chosen monthly allowance | IDR 3,000,000 |
| Connectivity, laundry and small needs | Chosen allowance; check housing inclusions | IDR 1,500,000 |
| Leisure | Chosen monthly allowance | IDR 3,000,000 |
| Subtotal | Before excluded costs and contingency | IDR 28,500,000 |
A 30-night booking normally spans 31 calendar dates. The food allowance here covers 30 days; adjust it for your arrival and departure arrangements and any additional meals or transport.
A couple sharing housing cannot simply halve the entire subtotal: food and personal activities usually remain individual. A family may need a different property, car capacity and childcare arrangements. Keep one-off costs in a separate column so that a refundable deposit is not mistaken for ordinary spending. The holiday money guide covers payments and currency handling.
Ask housing questions before paying a deposit
Request a written list of inclusions: electricity, water, drinking water, cleaning frequency, linen, internet, pool maintenance and rubbish collection where relevant. Ask how utilities are measured if they are charged separately. Air-conditioning use can make an included-versus-metered distinction material to the final cost. Confirm taxes, service charges and the currency in which the balance is due.
Check who is accepting payment and who has authority to rent the property. Keep the contract, inventory, payment receipt and contact details together. Photograph existing damage with the host's knowledge at check-in. A clear record helps distinguish a pre-existing mark from damage reported later.
Read deposit return conditions, cancellation rules, notice requirements and the remedy if an essential facility stops working. A promise in a chat should be reflected in the booking terms when it affects your decision. For a substantial property or legal commitment, obtain qualified advice appropriate to the transaction rather than treating travel guidance as a substitute.
Test connectivity and the room you will use
Ask about the connection serving the actual unit, not the wider resort. If a reliable connection matters, test it at a time you would use it and discuss outages, router access and backup arrangements. Check the table, chair, lighting, ventilation and whether a private call will disturb neighbours. A lobby speed test does not establish performance in a villa bedroom.
Keep an alternative for an interrupted connection, but verify that it works with your phone and data plan. A local tourist SIM and a long-term imported-device registration process are not the same thing. Indonesian Customs describes operator registration for tourist use of an overseas device on an Indonesian SIM for up to 90 days; longer stays need individual checking. Do not assume Wi-Fi access changes your immigration permission. Customs IMEI guidance.
Plan a realistic daily routine
Map ordinary journeys to meals, groceries, pharmacy and any regular activity before arranging distant excursions. If daily life requires several car rides, factor both time and cost into your area choice. Renting a scooter is not an automatic solution: the correct vehicle licence, applicable permit, helmet, competence and insurance remain necessary throughout a long stay.
Choose a rhythm with fewer major accommodation moves. A weekly outing can complement neighbourhood life, while frequent all-island drives can consume the time you hoped to gain by staying longer. Read Getting Around for the options and Day Trips for outings that make sense from your base.
Keep health and administration workable
Check that your insurance covers the full continuous trip and your activities, including any work permission questions, marine activities or vehicle use relevant to you. Know how to contact the insurer and where you would seek care. Arrange prescribed medication legally and in advance; a familiar overseas product name does not establish local availability or legality.
Keep secure copies of your passport, visa, entry record, accommodation address and onward travel. Track the stay expiry date separately from the housing checkout date. Avoid a final week in which a visa deadline, rental checkout and a weather-dependent island crossing all depend on one another.
Stay with consideration for your neighbours
Learn the property's waste and refill arrangements, keep music and calls considerate, and ask how ceremonies affect local access. A longer stay creates more opportunity to buy locally and understand the neighbourhood, but it also makes repeated noise, water use and traffic more consequential. Respect access to fields, temples and private lanes.
Leave your plans adjustable. Keep funds for a move if a property becomes unsuitable and avoid paying a long non-refundable balance solely to secure a discount. A successful longer stay combines appropriate permission, a usable home base, predictable essential costs and enough flexibility to respond when real life differs from the listing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I work remotely in Bali on a tourist visa?
Do not assume that a tourist stay permits your work. Indonesia has specific routes, including E33G for eligible overseas-employed remote workers. Check your intended activity, nationality and current immigration requirements before committing.
What does a month in Bali cost?
It depends on housing, guest count, transport and habits. The IDR 28,500,000 one-adult example on this page is a transparent hypothetical allocation, not an average market cost. Replace each input with current quotes.
Should I rent a villa for a month before arriving?
A shorter initial booking can let you inspect noise, access, internet and housing terms before making a larger commitment. Get the final inclusions, deposit and cancellation terms in writing.
Is a tourist SIM suitable for a longer stay?
Check the operator's validity, device requirements and your stay length. Customs describes a tourist operator-registration route for up to 90 days; do not assume the same arrangements cover a longer period.
