Prepare for Maldives immigration before you choose your final packing list. Tourist entry, the online arrival declaration, airline document checks and customs are separate steps. Completing one does not remove the others, and a paid declaration service cannot guarantee permission to enter.

This guide follows current Maldives Immigration requirements checked on 28 October 2026 and explains the practical documents to keep accessible during the journey. Nationality, passport type, transit route and purpose of travel can change what you need. Use the official authority for a decision about your own circumstances, particularly if you plan anything beyond a normal holiday. For the journey after passport control, continue to Maldives airports and arrival transfers.

Understand what the tourist visa covers

Maldives Immigration grants tourist visas on arrival without requiring advance visa approval for ordinary tourist travel, provided the traveller meets entry conditions. Permission is decided at the border. The UK government guidance for British-citizen tourists describes a 30-day visa on arrival. Check the permission actually granted rather than treating the maximum as an automatic entitlement.

Be clear about your purpose of travel. A holiday booking is not permission to take employment, provide paid services or stay indefinitely. Business meetings, professional projects and longer arrangements can require a different immigration route. Ask Immigration before purchasing a non-refundable trip if your plans do not fit straightforward tourism. If you want several weeks away, first check the lawful length of stay, then use the longer-stay planning guide for accommodation and practical questions.

Check passports and evidence for every traveller

Current Immigration guidance requires a passport or travel document with a machine-readable zone and at least one month of validity, and does not accept passports whose validity has been extended. Children need their own passports. Also check the rules of your airline, transit countries and onward destination: meeting the Maldives minimum does not automatically satisfy every part of your journey. Renew damaged or problematic documents in time rather than attempting to settle an interpretation at check-in.

Keep evidence of the complete itinerary, confirmed return travel, prepaid accommodation at a registered facility and sufficient funds, or approved sponsorship. Use the names recorded in travel documents and check that the booking dates cover the intended stay. Store copies offline as well as in email. If several hotels are involved, prepare the sequence clearly and keep the first property’s island and contact information easy to find. Do not rely on an agent’s informal assurance where a confirmed reservation is required.

Complete the free IMUGA arrival declaration

Each arriving foreign traveller, including a child, needs an individual Traveller Declaration. Submit it through the official IMUGA portal within the 96 hours before arrival. The form is free. Use your expected arrival in the Maldives to understand the window, and leave time to correct a mistake before airport check-in. Do not confuse a commercial intermediary’s service fee with a government charge.

Have passports, flight details and accommodation information available before starting. Review names, document numbers and dates against the original records. Save the completed declaration evidence or QR information so that it can be shown without dependable mobile data. If the portal changes its steps, follow the current official instructions rather than an old screenshot guide. A declaration records information; it is not a substitute for the visa decision or a guarantee that an airline will accept incomplete documentation.

The Immigration announcement of 13 August 2024 ended the outbound Traveller Declaration requirement from 15 August 2024. Do not pay someone to complete a departure form merely because an outdated webpage still says one is needed. Recheck official guidance before travel in case requirements change.

Keep different checks separate

Give each traveller responsibility for checking their own details, with an adult reviewing children’s documents. A shared folder is helpful, but keep a second accessible copy in case one phone or account becomes unavailable. Do not send passport scans to an unverified number merely because it appears in a transfer message.

Check nationality exceptions and route-dependent certificates

Immigration states that entry on Israeli passports has not been granted since 15 April 2025. Travellers whose circumstances involve more than one nationality or an unusual travel document should obtain advice from the authority for their actual case. Do not assume a general statement about tourist visas cancels a specific restriction. Match any airline advice to current official guidance and retain the response if you need clarification.

Yellow-fever certification depends on where you have travelled or transited, rather than being a routine requirement for every Maldives visitor. Immigration’s published infant exemption and the age wording in some health guidance differ. Families travelling with young children through a risk country should check the precise route, transit length and age directly with the relevant authority and airline. Discuss recommended health precautions with a travel clinician separately; an entry certificate and a medically recommended vaccine are different questions.

Review customs before packing

Customs restrictions still apply after immigration clearance. Do not bring alcohol into the country, even if your eventual resort has permission to serve it. Vapes and e-cigarettes are prohibited, including import, possession and use. The Maldives health ministry also confirms the generational tobacco restriction for people born on or after 1 January 2007. A foreign tourist should not assume exemption from local law.

Check medicines before departure, particularly controlled prescriptions. Carry the original packaging and prescription or explanatory medical letter, with enough supply for the trip and a sensible delay allowance. Ask the relevant authority about anything whose legal status is uncertain. For specialist filming, drones or large professional equipment, investigate permissions rather than treating a normal tourist entry stamp as equipment approval. The travel essentials guide covers a practical packing and communications checklist.

Manage arrival questions, changes and longer stays

At the border, answer questions plainly and have the supporting itinerary ready. If a booking changes before travel, update the relevant records through the official process and keep both the revised confirmation and transport details. An airport transfer representative can help with finding the right onward desk but cannot decide admissibility. Allow time for entry checks before arranging a tight connection, especially when carrying equipment or resolving documentation questions.

If you need to extend your stay, contact Immigration before the existing permission expires and use the current application procedure. Do not treat an extension as guaranteed or assume a hotel can approve it on your behalf. A delayed departure or a new room booking does not itself extend immigration permission. Keep dated communications and use the useful contacts page to locate official channels. Resolve eligibility first, then commit to additional non-refundable accommodation and activities.

Travel Tip: Make a separate offline document pack for each traveller: passport copy, return booking, accommodation confirmation, declaration evidence and any route-dependent certificate.

Frequently asked questions

Is the IMUGA declaration the same as a Maldives visa?

No. IMUGA is the online Traveller Declaration. Tourist admission is decided separately by Maldives Immigration on arrival after entry requirements are assessed. A completed form or paid intermediary service does not guarantee admission.

How early should I submit the arrival declaration?

Submit within the 96 hours before your expected arrival in the Maldives. Leave enough time to review details and solve problems before airport check-in. Use the official portal and complete an individual declaration for each traveller, including children.

Do I need an IMUGA form when leaving?

Immigration removed the outbound declaration requirement from 15 August 2024. The arrival declaration remains required. Recheck the current official instructions before travelling and avoid relying on older pages that still describe forms for both directions.

Does the Maldives require six months on every tourist passport?

Current Maldives Immigration guidance specifies at least one month of validity for a qualifying machine-readable passport. Your airline, transit or onward destination can impose other requirements, so check the whole itinerary before relying on that minimum.

Can a resort extend my visa automatically?

No. Extra hotel nights do not extend immigration permission. Ask Immigration about the current procedure before your existing permission expires; a supplier can assist with information but cannot promise approval.
