COSTA RICA TRAVEL GUIDE

Where to Stay in Costa Rica: Regions, Towns & Holiday Bases

Where you stay in Costa Rica determines how much of each day is spent reaching the experience you want. Choose a base for the route and season before choosing an individual property. A hotel described as “La Fortuna”, “Manuel Antonio” or “Uvita” can sit well outside the walkable centre, and a sea view may come with a steep access road.

This guide compares regions and practical bases. Hotels handles named-property choices and booking questions. For a first trip, two or three well-chosen bases usually leave more useful time than a new room every night; use Itineraries to test the overnight pattern against your arrival and departure.

Travel Tip: Ask the property to explain the journey from your room to dinner and from the vehicle drop-off to your room; those two routes often reveal the real trade-off.

Choose a Costa Rica base by the trip you want
BaseWhy choose it · what to check
La Fortuna / Arenal areaVolcano landscapes, nature experiences and hot springs. Decide between town services and a rural property requiring transport for meals and outings.
Monteverde / Santa ElenaA highland forest stay. Check distance to the chosen reserve, gradients and transfers; “Monteverde” does not mean every attraction is walkable.
Quepos / Manuel AntonioPacific park-and-coast visit with different town, hillside and beach settings. Compare local transport and exact park access.
Guanacaste coastBeach-led stay using LIR. Choose a named beach/town, then check the actual shore access, meals and local transport.
Cahuita / Puerto ViejoCaribbean coastline, food and nature at a slower pace. Account for the distance between communities and the return toward SJO.
Uvita / southern PacificA longer coast stay and Marino Ballena planning. Check whether accommodation is on the coastal plain or a hillside approach.
Tortuguero / OsaA purposeful nature stay involving boat, guide or access planning. Book the complete arrival and departure, not only a room.
San José / AlajuelaA city visit or SJO gateway night. Decide which task matters; an airport-area hotel is not automatically convenient for downtown museums.

La Fortuna: Town Convenience or Arenal-Area Retreat

Stay in La Fortuna town if being able to find meals and organise local services without a car is more useful than a secluded setting. Check the actual walking route from the room, especially after dark or in rain. A central address does not include transport to every waterfall, trail or hot-springs property.

An Arenal-area retreat can make sense for travellers who want to spend substantial time on the property. Price the meal plan, transfers and individual activities as part of the choice. A lower room rate outside town may offer poor value if every errand needs a separate ride. Confirm which facilities belong to your booked property and room category.

For families, consider how a child will cope with the last approach after a long transfer and whether there is a convenient meal on arrival. For access needs, request the specific room-to-dining and room-to-vehicle route; a photograph of a level lobby is not enough.

Monteverde and Santa Elena: Choose the Forest You Will Visit

Santa Elena can be convenient for restaurants and services; more dispersed properties trade convenience for a quieter setting. Ask which reserve the accommodation is closest to and how you reach it. The region contains separate reserves and attractions, so a generic “cloud forest nearby” description should not decide the booking.

A two-night stay lets you arrive, make one unhurried main forest visit and leave without trying to drive a mountain transfer after a full day of walking. Keep warm and waterproof layers available, and ask about shoes or clothing drying. A forest-edge room may be appealing while still requiring a vehicle for dinner.

If you travel without a car, obtain written confirmation of the transfer pickup point and the cost or availability of local rides. If a property offers a shuttle, check its actual route and operating window rather than assuming it replaces all transport.

Quepos and Manuel Antonio: Town, Hillside and Shore

Quepos suits travellers who value town services and an everyday working-town setting. The Manuel Antonio area adds coastal and hillside accommodation toward the park. Compare them by the journeys you will repeat: breakfast, park entrance, a suitable beach and dinner. A short distance on a map can contain a steep or unsuitable walking section.

A hillside property can provide attractive views but make a car, taxi or arranged transfer important. Ask where the vehicle drops you and whether there are steps to the room. If you want a beach-led stay, confirm the real walking entrance and its public conditions; a photograph from an elevated terrace does not establish direct shore access.

The official Manuel Antonio park page notes that the park has no vehicle parking. Build a separate plan for the entry-day transfer or a legitimate parking arrangement. Choosing accommodation near the park does not include park admission.

Guanacaste: Name the Beach Before Booking the Resort

LIR is the practical gateway to compare first for a Guanacaste-focused holiday. Tamarindo offers a different town-and-surf atmosphere from a more self-contained Papagayo-area property, while Sámara, Nosara and other coastal bases add their own approach and local transport questions. Pick the setting you will actually use rather than booking “Guanacaste” as if it were one town.

For a resort stay, inspect what is included and what requires a transfer. For an apartment or small hotel, check the walk to groceries and dinner, lighting, laundry and the last approach after rain. Surf access should be evaluated separately from swimming suitability; neither a long beach nor a sheltered photograph makes a safety promise.

If the flight price suggests arriving at SJO instead, compare the entire transfer and any extra overnight with the apparent saving. The LIR airport location page provides gateway context; your final beach journey is a separate route to confirm.

Cahuita and Puerto Viejo: A Caribbean Stay with Local Scale

Cahuita can suit travellers who prioritise its village and nearby protected-area setting; Puerto Viejo offers a different concentration of eating and evening options, with additional coastal communities farther along the road. Decide whether you want town convenience or a quieter room away from the centre.

A bicycle-friendly holiday idea still needs a judgement about the actual road, weather, light, ability and luggage. Do not assume that every coastal accommodation address is an easy ride from every meal or attraction. Ask how you will return from dinner and whether the arrival transfer reaches the door.

The coast deserves consecutive nights because the journey from the SJO area is part of the trip. Check its own seasonal pattern and retain a sensible final gateway plan. A Caribbean stay is a coherent alternative to the Pacific, not a spare afternoon on that route.

Uvita, Tortuguero and Osa: Understand the Last Approach

In Uvita, decide whether you want access to town and the coastal plain or a hillside stay with more dependence on a vehicle. Ask the property to describe the approach road and the vehicle it recommends for your dates; “close to the beach” can describe a straight-line distance that is irrelevant with luggage.

Tortuguero requires a complete boat or flight arrival plan and clear arrangements for departure. For the Osa Peninsula, choose Drake Bay or Puerto Jiménez in relation to the actual Corcovado sector and operator you will use. A lodge booking does not automatically contain park permits, guided activities or every transfer.

Ask for an itemised confirmation separating accommodation, meals, boat pickup, protected-area admission, guide and any equipment. Keep the return buffer appropriate to the connection. These bases are strongest when nature and the setting are the reason for the stay, rather than when added to increase the number of regions visited.

Gateway Nights and Longer Stays

San José and the Alajuela/SJO area serve different purposes. Choose downtown for a deliberate city stay; choose an airport-area night for your flight and transfer logistics. Confirm the exact airport and hotel shuttle conditions. An airport name on a booking site is not proof of a walkable route to the terminal.

For a longer stay, judge the room by normal weekdays: cooking, laundry, groceries, desk comfort, noise and backup connectivity. A place that is excellent for two holiday nights may be awkward for four weeks. Use Longer Stays & Costs for the housing and recurring-cost questions, then compare named properties only after the base is settled.

Where to Stay FAQs

Should I stay in one hotel for the whole Costa Rica trip?

One base can work for a beach-led break. A wider trip usually needs a small number of regional bases because distant attractions cannot all be comfortable day trips.

Is La Fortuna town the same as an Arenal-area resort?

No. Town services and rural properties have different local transport and meal arrangements. Compare the actual address and the journeys you will repeat.

Does a Manuel Antonio sea view mean direct beach access?

No. Many properties are on hillsides. Confirm the real path, steps, public entrance and return route before booking.

Should I use SJO or LIR for Guanacaste?

Compare LIR first for a Guanacaste-focused stay, then weigh your real flight and transfer options. A cheaper SJO flight may add substantial travel and an overnight.

Are Tortuguero transfers included with every lodge?

No. Obtain written confirmation of the meeting point, boat or flight, luggage, meals, activities and return arrangements.

Where should I stay before an SJO departure?

Choose a property whose actual airport transfer fits your flight. Downtown San José and the Alajuela/SJO area are different choices; confirm the route rather than relying on the hotel’s name.
