COSTA RICA TRAVEL GUIDE
Costa Rica Visa & Entry: Passports, Onward Travel & Arrival
Costa Rica entry planning starts with the passport you will use, your reason for travel and your route before and after the visit. Visa-free entry for one nationality is not a rule for every traveller, and permission to enter does not automatically settle work, driving or a later extension. Resolve those questions before paying for a stay whose dates depend on an assumed maximum.
The Costa Rican Tourism Board’s entry page is an official starting point, checked on 2 November 2026. For a nationality-specific decision, consult the responsible Costa Rican consulate and the current immigration guidance. Use Useful Contacts to locate the relevant authority; a hotel or booking intermediary cannot make the entry decision.

Check the Passport Rule That Applies to You
Use the current guidance for your exact passport category. A rule for a full British citizen passport, for example, should not be presented as a universal six-month passport rule or a universal waiver. If your passport type, residence or travel document is unusual, obtain the applicable answer from the responsible consulate before departure.
The UK government’s current Costa Rica entry guidance describes its scope as full British citizen passports travelling from the UK and notes that the Costa Rican authorities decide entry. Its reference to a potential tourist waiver period of up to 180 days is nationality-specific and subject to the officer’s decision. Other travellers should use their own applicable guidance.
Check names, passport number and expiry against tickets and applications. If a document has been replaced or reported lost, do not assume an old booking reference makes it usable. Keep the travel provider informed when a change affects its document checks. A valid reservation and a valid travel document are separate requirements.
Prepare Genuine Onward or Return Travel

ICT’s entry page says visitors need evidence of leaving before their visa or entry permission expires and describes approved commercial travel evidence, including pre-purchased onward flight, bus or cruise passage. Build that evidence around your real route. If you plan to leave Costa Rica by land and fly home from Panama, a return ticket from Panama alone does not explain how and when you will cross out of Costa Rica.
Confirm that the onward itinerary and its travel documents are workable for the next country and any transit point. An admissible Costa Rica visit does not establish permission for a connection elsewhere. Keep the confirmation accessible without a live internet connection in case it is needed during airline or border checks.
Do not base compliance on an anecdote that someone was not asked for evidence. Checks can differ, while your obligation and route remain your responsibility. If your onward plan changes after arrival, make the new departure fit the permission actually granted and keep its confirmation.
Read the Permission Granted on Arrival

Check the recorded entry and permitted stay before leaving the arrival process. If an apparent error would affect your departure, ask the appropriate officer or immigration authority how to resolve it. A headline maximum period is not the same as an individual authorisation, and a room booking does not extend the stay.
ICT’s entry page also lists a proof-of-economic-means requirement of at least US$100 per month or partial month of legal stay. Treat that as an entry requirement described by the authority, not a realistic whole-holiday budget. Your route, accommodation and transport can cost much more; plan those through Travel Costs & Money.
For work, study, residence or a longer stay beyond the relevant permission, identify the appropriate process rather than using a tourism booking as a substitute. The correct answer depends on your activity and circumstances. Ask early enough to obtain documents lawfully rather than relying on an informal border trip or a last-minute extension assumption.
Yellow Fever and Other Health Documents: Use Your Actual Route
Health entry requirements can depend on where you are arriving from, recent travel and transit. Read the current official health guidance and discuss medical questions with a qualified travel-health professional. Keep any required certificate with the documents you will use at check-in and arrival.
The ICT page checked for this guide contains an update effective 31 August 2026 concerning Costa Rican citizens and residents travelling from Costa Rica to yellow-fever-risk destinations. It separately tells incoming international visitors to verify requirements for their origin and travel history. Do not interpret the outbound update as either a blanket new vaccine rule for every tourist or a blanket exemption for incoming visitors.
If you have a medical contraindication or unusual itinerary, ask the responsible authority about accepted documentation well before departure. A personal decision not to take a vaccine and an officially accepted medical exception are different matters. Use Health & Safety for travel-health preparation; this page does not choose a vaccine or medicine for you.
Arrival, Customs and the Next Country

Have the first accommodation address, the intended itinerary and onward confirmation available. Answer the official questions consistently with the purpose of your visit. Give documents only through the legitimate airline, border or authority process rather than sharing sensitive passport material with an unsolicited helper.
Check customs obligations for the goods you carry and any items you plan to take home. Wildlife, plant material, shells and cultural objects can raise restrictions even if they appear to be souvenirs. Read the customs section of the UK government’s official Costa Rica advice, confirm the applicable requirements with Costa Rican customs and declare where required; a shop sale is not proof that export and import are permitted.
On departure by air, confirm whether the relevant departure charge is included in your ticket before paying anything separately. If continuing overland, use the current official instructions for the actual border and operator. The travel permission for the next country remains a separate check, including any return or transit requirements.
Before You Commit to a Longer Stay
Separate accommodation affordability from the legal ability to remain and undertake your planned activity. A remote-work programme, tourist visit and local employment have different considerations. Longer Stays & Costs explains housing and everyday costs and points to the official digital-nomad requirements for eligible applicants.
For family travel, dual nationality, unusual travel documents or other special circumstances, request the specific document list from the competent authority. Do not improvise a consent letter or presume that one adult’s entry permission settles every accompanying child’s case.
Recheck the official rules close to departure, and keep a record of the source and the passport/category to which it applies. If the authoritative site is temporarily inaccessible or two summaries conflict, resolve the question with the authority rather than choosing whichever version best fits an existing booking.
Visa & Entry FAQs
Can every visitor stay in Costa Rica for 180 days?
No universal period is assumed here. The applicable rules depend on passport/category and the permission actually granted on arrival.
Do I need evidence that I will leave Costa Rica?
ICT says visitors need return or onward-travel evidence before the permission expires. Prepare genuine documentation that matches your route.
Is US$100 per month a suggested Costa Rica holiday budget?
No. It is the minimum economic-means requirement described on the official entry page, not a realistic estimate of accommodation, transport and activities.
Does every international visitor need a yellow-fever certificate?
Requirements depend on origin, recent travel and transit. Verify your actual route with the relevant authority and medical professional.
Does a 28-night rental extend my entry permission?
No. A property booking and immigration permission are separate; check the recorded stay and the appropriate category.
Can I rely on entry guidance written for another passport nationality?
No. Use the guidance and competent consulate for your exact passport and circumstances, particularly if visa or document rules differ.
