Costa Rica Useful Contacts: Emergencies, Tourism & Consular Help

Use the contact that can actually solve the problem: emergency services for immediate danger, the operator for a booking or pickup, your own consular service for passport help, and the protected-area authority for admission or access. A long list of disconnected telephone numbers is less useful than knowing which organisation owns the decision.

The core tourism contacts below were checked against the Costa Rican Tourism Board’s official directory on 2 November 2026. Save the relevant details offline before travelling. Current operating hours, individual bookings and your own consular eligibility still need checking with the organisation.

Travel Tip: Save the full address and a short location description with the hotel’s phone number; a name alone may be ambiguous when asking for help.

If You Need Emergency Help

Call 9-1-1 when the situation requires emergency services. State what has happened, the precise location and any immediate danger. A property name may not be enough in a rural area: save its full address and ask staff how they would describe the location to responders. If you are on an organised outing, alert the guide or responsible operator too.

Keep the phone accessible and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Your insurance assistance number can help coordinate covered care and logistics, but it is a different service from emergency dispatch. Do not delay an urgent call while searching for a tourism-office email or an insurance form.

Prepare a short description that a companion can read aloud: your name, a callback number, the exact location or saved map coordinates, what happened and how many people need help. Add a nearby landmark and the access route if a remote property is difficult to find. These details help you explain the situation; they do not replace the dispatcher’s questions or instructions. Report the facts you can observe rather than trying to diagnose a condition. Request clarification if you do not understand an instruction.

Lost Passport and Consular Help

Use the Foreign Ministry’s foreign-representations directory to identify your country’s mission, then verify its current emergency and appointment procedures on its own official site. A Costa Rican embassy abroad handles a different audience from your own country’s consular assistance in Costa Rica.

If documents are lost or stolen, use the legitimate reporting process and ask the consular service what evidence and replacement documentation it requires. Keep secure copies and essential booking details separately so you can explain the journey. A police report or a passport photograph is not automatically permission to board a flight; confirm what the airline and authorities accept.

Record which document is missing, when and where you last had it, the passport nationality and the next booked journey. Give the consular service accurate dates and ask which travel arrangements must wait for its answer. Replacement-document eligibility, appointments, fees and processing times belong to that authority; this guide cannot promise same-day help or that a replacement will be accepted for every onward route.

Booking, Transport and Park Questions

For a late driver, changed pickup or missing room confirmation, contact the operator named on the actual booking. Include the reservation number, date, pickup address and a concise description of the issue. Ask for a revised plan and record it. A national tourist-information office cannot necessarily change another company’s reservation.

For a park ticket, start with the authority and process used for that protected area. SINAC’s portal notes exceptions to its standard online purchase flow, including Corcovado and Isla del Caño. Keep the ticket and the relevant identity document ready; do not treat a commercial guide confirmation as proof that every admission element is already booked.

If an airport pickup is unclear, use the confirmed operator contact or official airport service information. Avoid sharing passport or card details with a person who approaches you without a verifiable connection to your booking. Airports & Transfers explains the arrival choices.

Make a Small Contact Card for Your Own Trip

Before leaving a connected area, save your next accommodation address and contact, transport operator, reservation number, insurer assistance and your chosen emergency contact at home. Add the nearest appropriate medical source identified for a remote stay. Keep one version offline; a web link alone is less useful without a connection.

Use Costa Rica’s +506 country code for the ordinary local numbers you save in international form. Keep the emergency number as 9-1-1. This page does not promise that every data-only eSIM or messaging service can make an ordinary emergency voice call; check the device and provider arrangements described in Travel Essentials.

Update the card when the route changes. An emergency contact from yesterday’s lodge or a pickup address from a cancelled room can waste time when you most need a clear answer. Keep the information brief enough that a travel companion can use it too.

Prepare for losing the phone that holds the card. A separate paper copy or a secure copy available to a trusted companion should contain enough information to reach the accommodation, insurer and home contact without reopening your usual apps. Keep recovery details private and separate from the device. For a lost phone or payment card, contact the relevant provider through a verified channel to ask about blocking or recovery; those providers handle their own accounts. A tourism enquiry, a consular appointment and an emergency call each have a different purpose, so choose the service that owns the problem.
