COSTA RICA TRAVEL GUIDE
Costa Rica Airports & Transfers: SJO, LIR & Arrival Planning
Choose the Costa Rica arrival airport around the part of the country you intend to use. Juan Santamaría (SJO), serving the San José/Alajuela area, and Guanacaste Airport (LIR), near Liberia, lead to different sensible first-night and road plans. A lower airfare can lose its value if it adds a long transfer, an extra hotel night and a less practical departure day.
Compare the complete arrival: immigration and baggage, meeting your driver or collecting a vehicle, the final property approach and the time you will reach the room. Flight landing time is not hotel arrival time. A late arrival often calls for a straightforward gateway night rather than a first encounter with an unfamiliar rural road.

| Gateway | Route fit and arrival question |
|---|---|
| SJO — Juan Santamaría | Compare for San José/Central Valley, La Fortuna, central/south Pacific and Caribbean routes. Decide whether the first night should be near Alajuela/SJO or a deliberate city stay. |
| LIR — Guanacaste / Daniel Oduber | Compare for a Guanacaste-led beach or northwest itinerary. Confirm the real transfer to the named beach or rural property, not simply “Guanacaste”. |
| Domestic continuation | Identify the actual domestic airport/terminal, reporting time and baggage conditions. Separate tickets are not automatically a protected connection. |
SJO: Alajuela, San José and the First Night

SJO serves the capital region but an airport-area hotel and a downtown San José hotel answer different needs. Choose Alajuela/SJO-area accommodation when recovery and the next flight or transfer matter most. Choose the city if museums, food or an intentional urban stay are part of the trip. Confirm the address rather than relying on a hotel name containing “San José Airport”.
The official SJO transport page, checked on 2 November 2026, lists authorised airport taxis, rental services, buses and shuttle information. It identifies orange taxis for the airport service. Use the official pickup process or your confirmed operator rather than accepting an unsolicited offer in the arrivals flow.
For a hotel shuttle, ask whether reservation is required, where it meets arriving passengers and how late it runs. “Free shuttle” does not mean a continuously waiting private vehicle. If you land after its operating window, establish the alternative and its cost before travelling. Keep the hotel contact and address available offline.
LIR: Guanacaste Starts with a Named Destination

LIR is officially Guanacaste Airport, also associated with the Daniel Oduber name. The airport location page places it west of Liberia on Highway 21. It is a gateway to a broad region rather than a beach terminal, so the named town, resort or coastal address determines the rest of the journey.
Use the airport’s authorised transport directory to compare airport services. If a property arranges a transfer, confirm the driver’s name or identification process, the passenger count, luggage and the full drop-off address. An apartment outside a beach town may require a different last approach from the resort shown in a generic quote.
For public transport, check the current airport-specific route and the connection needed beyond Liberia. A bus passing a nearby main road is not the same as a vehicle entering the terminal. With large bags, children or a late arrival, compare the complete connection with a direct transfer instead of treating the smallest fare as the only relevant cost.
Choose a Transfer by Arrival Time and Group Needs
An authorised taxi is a practical point-to-point option when the service and charging method are clear. A prebooked private transfer can help with a group, child seat, luggage or a difficult last approach. Give the operator the flight number and ask how delays, waiting and a missed meeting are handled; do not assume the driver monitors every change automatically.
A shared shuttle can suit an arrival that fits its actual departure and pickup policy. Verify the latest check-in and what happens if immigration or baggage takes longer than expected. If you miss the shared service, know the replacement plan rather than discovering that no later departure fits your remote hotel.
A rental car adds collection paperwork and a vehicle handover before the drive begins. Check office hours, airport pickup versus off-airport office transfer, and the approach you will use after leaving the lot. If the route would start late, a gateway night and next-day collection may be easier. Compare through Car Rental.
Domestic Flights: Treat the Connection as Its Own Plan

Check the exact departure terminal or airport on the domestic booking. Do not infer a walkable connection from two tickets using the same regional name. Ask how you reach the next check-in point after international arrival and how much reporting time the domestic operator requires.
Read the purchased fare’s baggage conditions before packing. SANSA’s published baggage policy describes fare-dependent checked allowance and limited personal-item capacity; excess baggage may face operational constraints. If you are carrying cameras, mobility equipment or a large suitcase, ask about those items directly rather than applying your international carrier’s allowance.
Separate tickets may leave you responsible for a missed onward departure. Consider a night near the gateway when the domestic connection is important to a remote stay. On the return, a boat plus domestic flight plus international departure is a chain of separate operations; one successful segment does not guarantee the rest.
Child Seats, Access Needs and Luggage
State the child’s age/size and required restraint when arranging transport, then obtain confirmation of the equipment. A general “family transfer” description is not the same as a reserved suitable seat. Keep one small bag with food, medication, a change of clothing and the night’s essentials accessible while the main luggage is loaded.
For access requirements, explain the assistance and equipment needed: vehicle entry, transfer from wheelchair, whether the chair travels occupied, storage dimensions and the route from drop-off to reception. An airport’s accessible facilities do not establish that every taxi or hotel approach is suitable. Request specific answers from each provider.
If luggage is delayed, report it through the airline’s process before leaving the appropriate arrival area and record the case number. Let the hotel and driver know the revised plan. Keep medicines and essential overnight items with you according to airline/security rules so a delayed suitcase does not decide the first night.
Departure Day: Reverse the Whole Journey
Confirm the flight airport code, terminal, reporting time and onward requirements before booking the final night. For a road return, include weather/traffic uncertainty, meal or rest needs, fuel and car return. For a hotel shuttle, check that its first departure supports your flight rather than simply assuming the service runs whenever you need it.
An airport-adjacent room can simplify departure but does not remove check-in deadlines or disruption. A downtown stay may make sense if the city is the purpose of the final day, provided you price and allow the actual airport transfer. Use Where to Stay to match the final night to its task.
Save the airline and transfer confirmation, meeting point and fallback contact offline. Recheck the operating information close to travel; do not use this planning guide as a promise that a particular flight, road or pickup will operate unchanged.
Airports & Transfers FAQs
Is SJO in downtown San José?
SJO serves the capital region from the Alajuela area. An airport-area hotel and a downtown San José hotel offer different arrival and sightseeing plans.
Which Costa Rica airport should I use for Guanacaste?
Compare LIR first for a Guanacaste-led itinerary, then evaluate your real flight and final transfer options.
Are orange taxis the authorised SJO airport taxis?
The current SJO transport page identifies orange taxis for the airport service. Follow the airport’s official pickup arrangements.
Can I connect straight from an international arrival to a domestic flight?
Only if the actual terminal transfer, reporting time, entry formalities and ticket conditions work. Separate bookings do not automatically protect the connection.
Does an airport hotel shuttle run whenever my flight arrives?
Not necessarily. Confirm its reservation process, meeting point, operating hours and late-arrival alternative.
What should I tell a transfer provider about a wheelchair or child seat?
Describe the actual equipment and boarding assistance needed or the child’s restraint requirement, then obtain specific written confirmation before travel.
