COSTA RICA TRAVEL GUIDE
Costa Rica Itineraries: Realistic Routes for 7, 10 & 14 Days
Seven days in Costa Rica are enough for a focused trip, ten allow a useful three-base circuit, and fourteen can add a slower coastal stay. The mistake is counting an arrival or long transfer as another full sightseeing day. These routes protect time for the places you actually came to see rather than drawing the largest possible loop on a map.
All three examples use San José’s Juan Santamaría Airport (SJO) and include a final night near that gateway. They are editorial routes for independent travellers, not transport packages. Reserve actual transfers, park admission and accommodation separately. If your flights use Liberia (LIR), choose a Guanacaste route instead of assuming the same night pattern still works.

| Route | Overnight plan and purpose |
|---|---|
| 7 days / 6 nights | Alajuela or SJO area 1 + La Fortuna 2 + Quepos/Manuel Antonio 2 + SJO area 1. Volcano landscapes and a Pacific nature-and-beach base. |
| 10 days / 9 nights | SJO area 1 + La Fortuna 3 + Monteverde 2 + Quepos/Manuel Antonio 2 + SJO area 1. More forest variety, with three major transfer days. |
| 14 days / 13 nights | SJO area 1 + La Fortuna 3 + Monteverde 2 + Quepos/Manuel Antonio 3 + Uvita 3 + SJO area 1. A slower central/south Pacific route; no Osa or Caribbean detour. |
7 Days: La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio
Choose this route for a first visit when volcano scenery and a Pacific coast stay matter more than seeing every ecosystem. Use a rental car with appropriate conditions or prebook point-to-point transfers. A central hotel can simplify meals, but many La Fortuna attractions and Manuel Antonio hillside properties still need local transport. Check the actual property address through Where to Stay.

| Day | Plan and practical detail |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive at SJO, complete entry formalities and transfer to an Alajuela/SJO-area hotel. Eat, collect essentials and rest; no fixed park reservation. Night 1: SJO area. |
| 2 | Travel to La Fortuna in daylight. Check in, then take a short town orientation or a prebooked hot-springs visit if arrival allows. Night 2: La Fortuna. |
| 3 | Choose an Arenal-area nature walk as the main outing. Have lunch and rest before an optional local activity; avoid adding several paid parks to the same day. Night 3: La Fortuna. |
| 4 | Transfer to Quepos or Manuel Antonio, with a proper meal/rest stop. Confirm the following day’s park ticket and exact entrance. Night 4: Quepos/Manuel Antonio. |
| 5 | Use a confirmed opening day for Manuel Antonio National Park, allowing time to observe rather than race. Keep the afternoon flexible for rest or a nearby beach under current local conditions. Night 5: same base. |
| 6 | Return toward SJO in daylight, leaving space for delays. Stay close to your chosen airport transfer; a city museum is optional only if arrival leaves comfortable time. Night 6: SJO area. |
| 7 | Transfer to SJO for your booked international departure. Check airline reporting times and vehicle-return arrangements separately. No accommodation night is counted. |
Manuel Antonio’s current SINAC visitor page, checked on 2 November 2026, lists Tuesday closure. Reorder the coastal park day around its live calendar; do not buy non-refundable transport on the assumption that every day is available. If the only suitable park day is closed, retain the coast stay and choose a different confirmed nature experience rather than a rushed distant replacement.
10 Days: Add Monteverde Without Losing the Transfer Days
This option suits travellers who want both the Arenal area and a different highland forest setting. La Fortuna and Monteverde are close on a national map but not interchangeable bases. Reserve the complete land transfer or lake-crossing combination and ask who handles luggage; do not treat time on the water as the whole journey.

| Day | Plan and practical detail |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive at SJO; overnight in the airport area. Night 1: SJO area. |
| 2 | Daylight transfer to La Fortuna, then settle in and choose an easy meal near your accommodation. Night 2: La Fortuna. |
| 3 | Make an Arenal-area walk the main outing, with a local guide if interpretation is a priority. Leave the rest of the day uncommitted. Night 3: La Fortuna. |
| 4 | Choose one contrasting experience: a farm visit, a suitable waterfall visit, or hot springs. Confirm stairs and route demands before selecting a waterfall. Night 4: La Fortuna. |
| 5 | Transfer to Monteverde/Santa Elena. Check in, add a warm layer and keep any evening walk optional and separately booked. Night 5: Monteverde. |
| 6 | Visit one chosen cloud-forest reserve in the morning. Use a café, town stop or rest afterward; a canopy activity can replace the walk if that better fits your interests. Night 6: Monteverde. |
| 7 | Travel to Quepos/Manuel Antonio with a daylight arrival goal. This is a transfer day, not a second forest-and-beach excursion. Night 7: Quepos/Manuel Antonio. |
| 8 | Visit Manuel Antonio on an available reserved day; keep lunch and the afternoon relaxed. If closed, interchange the park plan with another coastal outing and revise nights before booking. Night 8: same base. |
| 9 | Return toward SJO, check in near the airport and confirm your departure transfer. Night 9: SJO area. |
| 10 | Depart from SJO. Allow separately for rental return, terminal procedures and any airline check-in requirement. |
Monteverde’s forest visit should be chosen by the reserve and experience you want; a ticket to one private reserve is not admission to every attraction in the area. If the connection and two hotel changes feel excessive, remove Monteverde and give those nights to La Fortuna and the coast. A slower ten-day trip can be more rewarding than completing a nominal circuit.
14 Days: Keep the Pacific Route and Add Uvita

This is a coastal extension of the ten-day route, with extra nights for weather and rest. It suits visitors who prefer staying longer to adding Tortuguero or Corcovado. Uvita is a useful southern Pacific base, but a hillside room can require a vehicle for every meal. Choose its actual location deliberately.

| Day | Plan and practical detail |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrival and recovery. Night 1: SJO area. |
| 2 | Transfer to La Fortuna; short orientation only. Night 2: La Fortuna. |
| 3 | Arenal-area nature walk with an unhurried lunch and rest. Night 3: La Fortuna. |
| 4 | Choose a farm experience, suitable waterfall visit or hot springs; avoid duplicating yesterday’s walk. Night 4: La Fortuna. |
| 5 | Transfer to Monteverde/Santa Elena; settle in. Night 5: Monteverde. |
| 6 | A chosen cloud-forest reserve and a relaxed afternoon. Night 6: Monteverde. |
| 7 | Transfer to Quepos/Manuel Antonio; check the park reservation. Night 7: Quepos/Manuel Antonio. |
| 8 | Manuel Antonio on an available reserved day, with the afternoon left flexible. Night 8: same base. |
| 9 | An easier coastal day, local food or a confirmed guided outing. Swap with Day 8 if the park calendar requires. Night 9: same base. |
| 10 | Move south to Uvita, have lunch and orient yourself to the actual town, beach entrances and accommodation access. Night 10: Uvita. |
| 11 | Choose a Marino Ballena visit according to park access and sea/tide conditions. A marine excursion is a separate operator decision, not guaranteed wildlife. Night 11: Uvita. |
| 12 | Keep a weather-flexible local day: a suitable waterfall outing, community experience or rest. Avoid a last-minute Osa round trip. Night 12: Uvita. |
| 13 | Return toward the SJO area in daylight. Leave room for road disruption and keep an optional city visit secondary. Night 13: SJO area. |
| 14 | Transfer to SJO and depart. No overnight is counted. |
When to Change the Whole Route

For a beach-led trip using LIR, combine one or two Guanacaste bases with an inland stay appropriate to your dates. For Caribbean culture and coastline, build a separate SJO–Cahuita/Puerto Viejo route and decide whether Tortuguero justifies the additional boat and transfer arrangements.
Families can remove one base and keep repeat nights in the same room. Travellers without a car should confirm each hotel’s pickup eligibility, then reserve transfers before isolated accommodation. For mobility needs, ask for precise steps, gradients, seating and vehicle boarding details for each outing. None of these routes assumes that a forest walk or a boat transfer is universally accessible.
Use Getting Around for transport choices, Airports & Transfers for gateway logistics, and Best Time to Visit before fixing a coast. The SINAC reservation system is the admission source for participating protected areas; check the particular park and sector rather than assuming a national pass covers the route.
Give Osa and Corcovado Their Own Route

Corcovado deserves its own access, guide and accommodation planning; it is not an easy spare afternoon from Uvita.
Itineraries FAQs
How many nights are in the seven-day Costa Rica route?
Six: one near SJO on arrival, two in La Fortuna, two in Quepos/Manuel Antonio and one near SJO before departure.
Can I include both coasts in one week?
It would consume a large share of the trip in transfers. This guide recommends a focused inland-and-Pacific route; build a Caribbean route instead if that coast is your priority.
Is Monteverde a day trip from La Fortuna in these routes?
No. The ten- and fourteen-day routes give Monteverde two nights because the transfer and forest visit deserve their own time.
Can I use a shuttle rather than a rental car?
Yes, if every inter-base service and local outing works from your actual hotels. Confirm pickup addresses, luggage and accessibility before booking.
What if my Manuel Antonio day falls on Tuesday?
The current SINAC page lists Tuesday closure. Move the park day to an available ticket date or revise the coastal stay before committing to the full route.
Is the final airport night a connection guarantee?
No. It creates planning space, but road, weather and airline disruptions can still occur. Follow current operator information and allow suitable margins.
