Your Japan entry requirements depend on nationality, passport type, residence, purpose and length of stay. A general statement that tourists do not need a visa is not enough. Use the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japanese diplomatic mission responsible for your place of residence to establish the rule that applies to you.

The official sources linked here were checked on 24 October 2026. They are the authorities for current requirements; this guide helps organise the questions and practical preparation. A visa, an airline boarding decision and permission to enter Japan are different stages. Accommodation or tour bookings do not substitute for the documents required by the authorities.

Start with your passport and purpose

Open the MOFA visa information page and follow the relevant route for your nationality and trip. If a visa-exemption arrangement applies, read its conditions, including the permitted activity and length of stay. If it does not, check the application procedure for the mission with jurisdiction over your residence.

Do not assume that everyone in a family or group has the same requirements. Different passports, residence permits or travel histories can lead to different application routes. Check each person's documents separately, including children's passports. Transit through another country also has its own requirements, even when the final destination is Japan.

Tourism, a visit to relatives, paid work, study and a longer stay are not interchangeable purposes. If the trip includes an activity outside ordinary tourism, describe it accurately to the appropriate authority. A holiday booking cannot establish that working remotely, taking employment or performing paid activities is permitted under your entry status.

Visa applications and eVISA eligibility

Where a visa is needed, use the application method specified by the responsible Japanese mission. Depending on eligibility and location, that may involve an online route, an accredited agency or an in-person process. The availability of an electronic visa is not a universal entitlement for every nationality or every person living in the same country.

MOFA's visa FAQs explain common application questions. Read the current document list and timing guidance before paying for non-refundable travel. A general processing estimate is not a guaranteed completion date, and additional information may be requested. Do not book an appointment or submit documents through an unverified intermediary simply because its name resembles an official service.

Keep copies of what you submit and use consistent details across the passport, itinerary and application. If your name, passport or plans change, ask the mission what needs to be updated. Avoid treating a previous successful trip, a friend's experience or an old visa as proof that the present application is unnecessary.

What Visit Japan Web does

The Digital Agency's Visit Japan Web guide explains the arrival-registration process and the codes used for immigration and customs. Start from the official service and read the instructions for each traveller. It is an administrative preparation tool, separate from determining whether you need a visa.

Have your passport details, flight information and the first accommodation address available before entering information. Check the date and flight number carefully, particularly when the flight crosses a calendar day. Make sure the information is current if the airline changes your routing or you change the first hotel.

Keep the relevant confirmation available offline where the official instructions allow, and keep the passport and other required documents accessible in hand luggage. An uncharged phone should not be the only place where your arrival information exists. Follow the airport and border staff's current directions if the local process differs from a screenshot you saved earlier.

Customs, food and things you bring with you

Read Japan Customs guidance before packing food, plants, animal products, specialist equipment or a large quantity of goods. Rules depend on what the item is and how it is being brought in, rather than whether it is sealed in supermarket packaging. A snack that is allowed at home may still need declaration or be prohibited at the destination.

Medication requires a separate check of the active ingredient, quantity and any prior permission. A prescription from your home doctor does not automatically establish import permission. Use the official information linked in Health & Safety and contact the responsible authority early when your medicine needs clarification. Keep medicines labelled and accessible for inspection.

Customs declarations should be accurate. When uncertain, ask the officer or the official information service rather than relying on a general travel forum. Do not carry an item for another person unless you understand what it is and accept responsibility for it. Checked baggage and hand baggage may also be subject to different airline safety rules, particularly for batteries.

Make the first arrival simple

After arrival, allow time for immigration, baggage reclaim, customs and finding onward transport. A published train journey time starts after you reach the right station and board the service. It does not describe the complete period between aircraft arrival and hotel check-in.

Choose a flexible first-night plan. A late landing, delayed baggage or a long immigration queue can affect the last convenient train. Save the hotel's late-check-in policy and a way to contact it. If arrival after the final transport service is plausible, compare an airport-area stay with the total cost and practicality of a late transfer.

If the itinerary requires changing between Narita and Haneda, treat that as a surface transfer between different airports. You may need to enter Japan, collect baggage and complete a new check-in. Confirm the arrangement with the airline and check whether the tickets provide any connection protection. The Airports & Transfers guide separates these decisions from domestic travel.

Extensions, longer visits and a change of purpose

A longer holiday needs the correct permission for its entire duration. Do not assume that leaving briefly and returning resets your entitlement or guarantees readmission. If you need to extend a stay or change the purpose of the visit, seek official guidance before your current permission expires.

Accommodation that accepts a month-long booking does not establish immigration eligibility for that month. The same applies to language classes, volunteer activities and work arrangements. Deal with the legal status first, then compare the practical costs of staying longer. Our Longer Stays & Costs guide focuses on accommodation and everyday expenditure, rather than granting permission for an activity.

Keep the contact information for your own embassy or consulate and the relevant Japanese authority with your travel documents. For an urgent passport problem, your country's mission is the appropriate starting point. For a question about Japan's visa requirements before travel, use the Japanese mission responsible for your residence. They perform different roles.

Visa & Entry FAQs

Does Visit Japan Web replace a visa?

No. It supports arrival procedures. Determine visa or exemption requirements separately through MOFA and the responsible Japanese diplomatic mission.

Does a Japanese visa guarantee admission?

No. MOFA explains that a visa is one requirement for entry; the immigration examination and admission decision occur separately.

Can I assume the same rules apply to my partner?

No. Check each traveller’s nationality, passport, residence and purpose individually, including children and transit requirements.

Can a hotel booking prove I may work during the visit?

No. Permission for paid work or other activities is an immigration matter. Confirm the status required for your actual activity with the appropriate authority.
