Amsterdam City Passes & Tickets: Which Option Fits?

Choose tickets after choosing your visits. An Amsterdam attraction card can be useful for a busy museum itinerary, but a pass is not automatically the cheapest or simplest option. First list the venues and rides you actually want, then compare the exact product and its current conditions.

Product distinctions checked on 15 October 2026; prices and terms should be rechecked at purchase.

Start with the card variant

The official City Card FAQ describes Explorer choices of 3, 5 or 7 participating locations, used within five consecutive days. It excludes GVB transport. Total Experience includes the specified GVB transport component; NS trains and Connexxion services are excluded. Compare the actual variant, not an old generic City Card description.

The official I amsterdam ordering page distinguishes Total Experience, which includes public transport, from Explorer, which lets you choose a set of activities without public transport. Read the selected option rather than relying on a general statement that “the city card includes transport”.

Check the current I amsterdam product page and FAQ for the offer you are buying. Inclusion can differ from a discount, and transport coverage is not the same as every train or regional service.

Do the value calculation with your own plan

Write down the current individual ticket prices for your chosen visits. Remove places you would not otherwise visit. Add only the transport and other inclusions you will genuinely use, then compare that total with the selected pass price. Account for any visits you already receive free or discounted through age, another card or a venue policy.

A light itinerary with one major museum and mostly walking may favour separate tickets. A concentrated schedule of included visits and several eligible rides may make a bundled product more attractive. These are decision scenarios, not a savings guarantee: the answer depends on current prices and your own usage.

Reservations still matter

Do not assume that a pass creates availability at a sold-out venue. Check every important attraction’s booking instructions before activating or purchasing. The Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House should not be assumed to be included in the I amsterdam selection; use their own current ticket information.

For an included cruise or bicycle rental, read the specific operator and product conditions. A general inclusion does not mean every boat departure, upgrade or guided ride is covered. Build the itinerary around confirmed access rather than trying to maximise a nominal attraction count.

Separate city, airport and regional travel

GVB operates Amsterdam city transport; NS trains and regional services are distinct. If your stay includes Schiphol or a day outside Amsterdam, compare the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket with the actual route and operators you need. Do not buy it solely because its name sounds broader.

Read activation and validity rules carefully. A product measured in hours can behave differently from one tied to calendar days. Keep the confirmation and a fallback payment method, and use Getting Around for check-in and check-out guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Does a card guarantee entry to popular museums?

No. Check the venue’s current inclusion, ticket and reservation requirements separately.

Should every family member buy the same pass?

Not necessarily. Child admission and travel products can change the comparison. Price the actual party and ages before choosing.
