Amsterdam Canal Houses: Photo & Viewpoint

The canal-house façade is a useful subject for studying scale, rhythm and detail. A broad view shows the row; a closer composition can isolate a gable, window pattern or loading feature.
Work with the rhythm of the façades
The closely spaced houses read as a sequence of narrow vertical shapes. Leave a little space above the gables and compare a full waterfront view with a smaller group of contrasting fronts. A grey sky can preserve detail in brick and windows better than strong glare.
These buildings may be homes, workplaces or venues. Photograph from public space and do not use private steps as a platform. Check the local light rather than assuming every façade faces the same direction.
