Moored boats add another layer to Amsterdam’s relationship with water. A wider composition can show the boat, quay and houses together without pretending to reveal life inside.

Show the houseboat in its setting

The black hull and red cabin make the houseboat the clear subject, while the Prinsengracht canal, quay and canal houses establish its Amsterdam setting. Follow the curved stern and mooring lines through the frame; leave enough space to show how the vessel sits alongside the bank. Keep the composition on the exterior rather than residents’ windows.

A houseboat can be someone’s home. Do not board, lean on fittings or photograph through windows. A boat visible in this image may move or change, so use the scene as a composition idea rather than a promise of a particular vessel.
