Amsterdam Canal: Photo & Viewpoint

A canal view works through layers: water, bridge or quay, trees and façades. Notice how a small change in position alters the overlap between the buildings.
Separate water, quay and houses
In this water-level view, the near bank and moored boats create a strong diagonal. Compare a wider scene with a tighter frame that removes the boat edge. Keep the vertical house fronts as straight as your position allows, and use the far bridge as a stopping point for the eye.
Keep the composition within the space available on the pavement. Boats, deliveries and bicycles are part of a working city; wait for a clear moment without obstructing their route.
