THAILAND TRAVEL GUIDE
Thailand Visa & Entry: Official Checks Before You Travel
Thailand entry rules depend on your passport, purpose, route and travel date. Information checked on 25 October 2026 includes changes effective from 15 September 2026. Use the Thai authority responsible for your application and treat the digital arrival card as a separate requirement.
Start with your nationality and purpose
Check the passport you will actually use, where you are applying from and why you are travelling. Tourism, business meetings, work, study, retirement and a longer stay are not interchangeable purposes. A short holiday permission should not be assumed to cover another activity merely because it takes place during a short visit.
Use the official Thai e-Visa website and the relevant Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate-General. The official service lists visa categories and the application process. A submitted application is not an approval, and a hotel reservation or an airline's willingness to sell a ticket does not establish eligibility to enter.
Prepare early when a visa is required. Check supporting documents, the responsible application location and current processing guidance before making inflexible plans. Do not use an unofficial seller's promise of rapid approval as a substitute for the authority's requirements.
The September 2026 change
The Royal Thai Embassy in Washington's exemption notice, updated in September 2026, describes a 30-day tourism exemption for listed eligible passports, effective from 15 September 2026. Older 60-day summaries should not be used for a new arrival without checking the current scheme.
This is not a statement that every traveller receives 30 days. Eligibility, passport type and purpose still need checking. The actual permission granted on arrival matters, and an extension is subject to the immigration authority's decision. Do not plan an overstay on the assumption that paying a fine or making another entry is a routine solution.
British and Irish passport holders can also consult the Royal Thai Embassy in London's revision announcement. Nationality-specific guidance is useful, but it should not be copied automatically to a traveller using a different passport or a different purpose of travel.
Important differences between published sources
Published summaries do not agree on every detail. The Washington Thai Embassy notice specifies THB 20,000 per person or THB 40,000 per family in adequate cash or equivalent for the exemption scheme. The current UK FCDO page gives a different funds example. Ask the responsible Thai authority what evidence applies to you rather than choosing the less demanding figure.
The London embassy announcement describes a twice-per-calendar-year limit for the exemption scheme, while the UK FCDO entry page describes the normal twice-yearly restriction in terms of land checkpoints and says it does not generally apply to air arrivals. This guide does not resolve that discrepancy by turning either summary into a universal guarantee.
If repeated entries are part of your plan, obtain confirmation for your circumstances before booking. Keep the authority's current reply or published instruction with your travel records. A prior successful entry is not proof that the next entry will be accepted under the same conditions.
Thailand Digital Arrival Card
The Immigration Bureau's TDAC guidance describes a free digital arrival card for non-Thai arrivals, with submission in the three days before arrival, including the arrival date. Use the official Immigration Bureau service. A site charging to submit the basic official form should not be mistaken for a government fee.
The card and a visa answer different questions. Completing TDAC does not replace a required visa and does not extend permission to remain. Prepare your passport details, arrival journey, accommodation address and the information requested by the official form. Check the submitted information against your actual booking and save the confirmation in an accessible place.
The official FAQ identifies exceptions such as transit without passing immigration and crew. A self-transfer that requires collecting baggage or leaving the airside area can change the situation. Confirm the actual airline and airport process rather than assuming the word transit automatically creates an exemption.
If a flight or accommodation changes, follow the official update or resubmission instructions. Do not submit real personal data through a third-party link simply because it appears prominently in search results. Use the government service address and check the form before entering passport information.
Passport, onward journey and arrival evidence

Check passport validity and blank-page requirements for the passport and permission you will use. The current FCDO page for full British-citizen passports specifies at least six months' validity after arrival and a blank page. Other document types and nationality-specific instructions require their own check.
Have the first accommodation address and onward or return travel evidence accessible. Immigration or the airline may ask for supporting information, including evidence of funds. Keep the actual documents rather than relying entirely on an internet connection at the desk. A confirmation saved offline can prevent an avoidable delay.
Count the intended stay using calendar dates, not just hotel nights. A journey crossing midnight can affect arrival or departure dates. After entry, inspect the permission or stamp and raise a discrepancy promptly through the proper channel. The length of a visa's validity is not necessarily the same as the period you are permitted to remain after entering.
Land borders and separate tickets
A valid passport and visa do not establish that a particular border crossing is operating. Current government advice includes restrictions and risk warnings near parts of Thailand's borders. Check the intended crossing with responsible authorities and transport operators close to travel. A route drawn on a map is not evidence that a bus or border service is available.
For a separate-ticket connection through Bangkok, determine whether you must pass immigration, collect baggage and check in again. Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang are separate airports. A landside transfer can require entry eligibility even when the entire journey is described informally as a connection.
Allow time for the full process and do not assume the second airline will protect you if the first flight is late. The Airports & Transfers guide explains the physical journey; it does not replace the immigration decision. The two checks should be completed together before travel.
Longer stays, work and extensions
For a longer stay, choose the appropriate immigration category for the actual purpose. Do not rely on a monthly apartment booking, a remote-work advertisement or a previous traveller's experience as legal permission. The official e-Visa service lists distinct options, including categories whose eligibility and supporting documents require careful assessment.
If you need an extension, check the official process before the existing permission expires. Do not assume it is automatic or that a future appointment excuses an overstay. Keep copies of relevant documents and use the proper authority for questions about your status.
This page supports preparation rather than an individual immigration determination. Before departure, recheck the official sources for your nationality and purpose and ask the responsible Thai mission about unresolved differences. That is particularly important for repeated entries, non-standard travel documents and travel that is not ordinary tourism.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is TDAC a visa?
No. It is a separate digital arrival card. It does not replace a required visa or grant an extension of stay.
Can I still assume a 60-day exemption?
No. Current Thai embassy notices describe a revised scheme effective from 15 September 2026. Check eligibility and permission for your passport and arrival date.
Which rule applies if official summaries differ?
Ask the responsible Thai embassy, consulate or Immigration Bureau about your circumstances. The differences on funds and repeat entries are identified above rather than silently resolved.
