Choose an arrival airport for the first base you will actually use. Bangkok has two separate airports, and an island holiday can involve a mainland transfer and a boat after the flight. The useful comparison is the complete journey to reception.

Match the airport code to the booking

Suvarnabhumi is BKK and Don Mueang is DMK. Both serve Bangkok, but they are separate airports with a landside journey between them. Read the three-letter code on every flight confirmation, including the domestic flight, rather than relying on a search result headed Bangkok.

A through-ticket connection and two unrelated tickets can create different responsibilities when a flight is delayed. Ask the airline whether baggage is checked through and whether you remain airside. Do not assume that sharing an airline brand, booking website or city name creates a protected connection.

For a regional arrival, check the route to your chosen accommodation. Phuket airport does not place you at every Phuket beach; Krabi airport does not include the boat to Railay; a mainland airport serving the Gulf islands does not put you on Samui. The regional map helps identify the geography before you compare transfers.

Suvarnabhumi: rail or a road transfer

The official Suvarnabhumi airport guide identifies the Airport Rail Link station in the main terminal's basement level and the public taxi system on Level 1. The rail journey can be useful when your accommodation connects well with its city stations and onward transit.

The rail option still needs a final approach. Check whether your destination is near Phaya Thai, a useful onward BTS route or the Makkasan connection toward MRT Phetchaburi. With heavy luggage, children or mobility needs, several transfers and a walk can outweigh the benefit of avoiding road traffic.

A taxi or prearranged car can simplify a late arrival or a door-to-door journey. Use the official queue or a properly identified booked service, retain the vehicle details and understand what the fare includes. Tolls, airport charges and baggage rules can affect the total. Do not treat an airport-to-city estimate as a guarantee for every district or traffic condition.

The official guide currently lists Airport Rail Link operation from 05:30 to midnight and a free inter-airport shuttle for eligible connecting passengers. Recheck the operating window and boarding instructions before relying on the last service. A timetable cannot protect a connection when immigration or baggage takes longer than expected.

Don Mueang: a different city approach

Don Mueang has its own terminal arrangements and access to the suburban Red Line. Confirm the terminal for the actual flight and follow the current airport signs for rail, buses or taxis. The Red Line is a city connection, not a direct train to every visitor district.

If your route continues through Krung Thep Aphiwat or the MRT network, check the interchange and the final walk. Old-town accommodation may still need a road leg. With a late flight, compare the last useful service with the time needed to leave the terminal rather than comparing only the scheduled landing time.

Keep DMK written clearly in your transfer request. A driver sent to BKK cannot solve a wrong-airport pickup quickly. If an itinerary requires switching airports, confirm entry eligibility and baggage collection as well as the transport. A domestic departure at another airport can turn a short-looking connection into a substantial travel day.

Changing between BKK and DMK

The airports are connected by road, and traffic makes a fixed guaranteed journey time inappropriate. The official BKK guide lists a free shuttle for passengers connecting between flights who can show the required onward-travel evidence and identification. Check the current eligibility and pickup instructions; it is not a general free city bus.

Allow time for immigration where required, baggage, finding the pickup point, road travel and the next airline's check-in deadline. These are separate stages. If the connection is on separate tickets, a missed onward departure may be your responsibility even when the first delay was outside your control.

For a tight or important onward journey, consider an overnight stay or a different flight arrangement rather than constructing the plan around the fastest possible road time. A buffer reduces some risk but is not a guarantee against disruption. The Visa & Entry guide explains why a landside transfer can also require permission to enter Thailand.

Chiang Mai and the north

Chiang Mai airport is CNX. It is a useful gateway for a northern stay, but the room location still matters: the old city, Nimman area and riverside accommodation produce different final journeys. Confirm whether a hotel transfer is included, paid, shared or available only by advance arrangement.

Chiang Rai airport is CEI and serves a separate city. Compare a direct arrival there with an overland move from Chiang Mai if Chiang Rai is central to the trip. A multi-stop northern itinerary should be chosen for the places you want to spend time, not simply because both airports appear in a regional search.

For a mountain or rural property, ask for the last approach and late-arrival arrangements. The airport-to-city journey may be short compared with the onward road transfer. Avoid adding a remote evening drive immediately after a tiring international journey when a city night would make the arrival more manageable.

Phuket, Krabi and the Gulf

Phuket airport is HKT. The road transfer to the exact beach can be substantial, and Phuket town is a different base from the west coast. Confirm the actual resort entrance and whether the price includes the whole party and luggage. A shared service may make additional stops.

Krabi airport is KBV. Ao Nang is a mainland base; Railay normally adds a boat leg. If arriving late, ask the accommodation how the final crossing works and what happens if sea conditions prevent it. Do not assume an airport car can drive directly to every property advertised in the province.

Samui airport is USM. A flight to the mainland, such as Surat Thani URT, requires additional road and sea travel to reach an island. A combined ticket may simplify the booking, but verify the piers, inclusions and delay policy. Ferry time alone is not the door-to-door transfer duration.

Families, mobility needs and late flights

Ask about the vehicle, seat belts, child restraints and luggage capacity before confirming a private transfer. A label such as family van does not answer those questions. For mobility needs, explain whether you require a low step, lift, space for equipment or assistance at a pier; obtain a specific response.

Keep the accommodation contact and arrival instructions offline. If reception closes or the last boat has departed, a flight delay can create an extra night away from the booked room. Agree the practical fallback in advance when arriving at remote or boat-access accommodation.

For departure, work backwards from the airline's check-in requirements and add the complete journey from reception. An island boat, road transfer and domestic flight should not be treated as one reliable short hop before an international departure. Getting Around covers travel between bases, and itineraries shows how to protect the final night.

Travel Tip: Put the airport code in every transfer message. “Bangkok airport” is ambiguous, and correcting a wrong-airport pickup can cost much more time than the flight itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are BKK and DMK the same airport?

No. Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang are separate airports. Changing between them requires a landside road journey and the necessary entry arrangements.

Does Krabi airport mean I can drive to Railay?

No. Railay normally needs a boat approach after the mainland transfer. Confirm the late-arrival and weather arrangements.

Is a mainland flight to the Gulf the same as flying to Samui?

No. A mainland arrival adds road travel and a ferry before the final hotel transfer.
