South Africa Itineraries: 7, 10 and 14 Days

A useful South Africa itinerary starts with overnight bases and transfer days. The country offers enough variety for several holidays, so the routes below make deliberate choices rather than trying to connect every famous place. They are independent planning examples, not packages: accommodation, park entry, guides, flights and transfers need separate checks and bookings.
Seven calendar days normally give six nights; ten days give nine; fourteen give thirteen. Arrival and departure are included in those totals. Replace a sightseeing day with recovery time if your international journey requires it, and check your actual flight schedule before copying a domestic connection. Driving stages depend on traffic, weather, roadworks, breaks and the correct property entrance.

| Time | Route and nights | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days / 6 nights | Cape Town 4, Winelands 2 | A regional first visit with limited flying |
| 10 days / 9 nights | Cape Town 5, one safari base 3, departure gateway 1 | A city-and-wildlife holiday |
| 14 days / 13 nights | Cape Town 4, Overberg 2, Garden Route 4, Addo area 2, Gqeberha 1 | A one-way southern road journey |
Seven days: Cape Town and the Winelands
Begin and finish at Cape Town International Airport. This route suits a first visit, food-and-wine interests and travellers who prefer fewer accommodation changes. Spend four nights in Cape Town and two in either Stellenbosch or Franschhoek. Arrange a driver or suitable guided service on tasting days; keeping the rental car parked does not remove the need for an actual return plan.
| Day | Plan and practical detail |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Cape Town, transfer to your chosen neighbourhood and keep the first evening nearby. Stay Cape Town. |
| 2 | Choose a clear-weather mountain outing, with a city museum alternative if conditions are unsuitable. Stay Cape Town. |
| 3 | Explore the Peninsula with a planned route and time for one or two substantive stops. Stay Cape Town. |
| 4 | Give history and culture a full day. A confirmed Robben Island tour can anchor it; preserve a land-based alternative. Stay Cape Town. |
| 5 | Transfer to Stellenbosch or Franschhoek, settle in and explore the town before a relaxed dinner. Stay Winelands. |
| 6 | Use prearranged transport for a selective tasting day, with meal reservations and time between properties. Stay Winelands. |
| 7 | Return to Cape Town airport with a buffer for traffic and vehicle return. A late flight may allow a short local outing, not another distant excursion. |
Keep days two to four interchangeable when bookings allow. The Robben Island Museum provides the official tour and ferry booking route; the crossing is part of the visit, not an independent public ferry you can substitute. A cancellation should trigger a useful city day rather than a rushed replacement activity across the Peninsula.
For a slower version, spend all six nights in Cape Town and take one arranged Winelands outing. This is especially useful when luggage changes, mobility needs or a late arrival make a second base less attractive. Conversely, wine-focused visitors can move one Cape night to the Winelands without adding a third hotel.
Ten days: Cape Town and one safari base

For this northeastern safari version, choose Kruger National Park or a neighbouring private-reserve base. Use Cape Town as the arrival point and select the departure gateway around the safari transfer. Five Cape Town nights provide flexibility; three safari nights give two full days between arrival and departure; the final gateway night protects the international flight. That allocation totals nine nights. Check whether your chosen safari airport connects directly on your dates or requires an additional connection.
Day one is arrival and neighbourhood orientation. On day two choose the mountain or a city alternative, then use day three for the Peninsula. Day four focuses on museums and local history. Day five can be a guided Winelands day, a second cultural visit or simply a free day that absorbs weather disruption. Sleep in Cape Town on all five nights.
Day six is a transfer day to the selected wildlife base. Confirm luggage allowances, the actual lodge gate and the latest practical arrival before assuming you can join an afternoon activity. Days seven and eight are full safari days. Give them a rhythm of morning activity, rest and an afternoon outing, with plans adjusted by the guide or your own self-drive route.
On day nine, transfer back to your international departure gateway and stay there. Day ten is departure. If a particular flight schedule makes a same-day international connection attractive, consider ticket protection, transfer distance and the consequences of a delay before removing that buffer night. A separate domestic booking and an international flight should not be treated as one protected journey.
Choose either a self-drive national-park stay or a guided private-reserve stay for this short route, rather than changing safari bases halfway through. SANParks publishes Kruger entrance and camp timing information; neither a flight booking nor a nearby hotel overrides park access rules. Read the safari comparison before locking in the flight.
Fourteen days: Cape Town, coast, Garden Route and Addo
This one-way road route starts in Cape Town and ends in Gqeberha. Confirm one-way rental terms, the return location and the domestic or international onward connection before booking rooms. It suits travellers who enjoy the journey as well as its endpoints. The suggested nights are Cape Town four, Overberg two, Garden Route four, Addo area two and Gqeberha one.
Day one is arrival; use days two and three for flexible Cape Town and Peninsula plans. Day four is a history, garden or food-focused city day, keeping the fourth night in Cape Town. On day five collect the car if you have not needed it in the city and travel to your Overberg base. Day six stays local: choose a coastal walk, a town visit or an appropriately operated marine activity when season and conditions support it. Do not promise whale sightings as part of an ordinary drive.
Day seven is the main move to a Garden Route base such as Wilderness, Knysna or Plettenberg Bay. On day eight choose a manageable forest or estuary outing near that base. Day nine can be a second local activity with beach time where lifeguard and water conditions permit. Day ten is a Tsitsikamma-focused outing or a shorter scenic day, depending on your chosen base and willingness to drive.
On day eleven move to the Addo area without trying to make the drive itself a full safari. Day twelve is the protected wildlife day. Day thirteen allows a final local outing if appropriate, then moves to Gqeberha for the last night. Day fourteen is departure. An early onward flight is easier when you have already finished the park transfer and most of the road journey.
The official Addo park page and Garden Route trail information identify the actual park areas and activities. An advertised coastal trail may have restrictions or changed sections; check the selected route rather than assuming every path near a national park is open. This route intentionally leaves Johannesburg, Kruger and Durban for another journey.
Adapt the route before adding destinations
Families often gain more from shortening driving stages than from adding a famous extra stop. Travellers who need step-free access should confirm the room, vehicle and actual activity surface together. A garden, boardwalk or lodge can contain both accessible and difficult sections. Build the holiday around confirmed practical access, then choose optional outings nearby.
For a car-free holiday, the first two routes are easier to reconstruct with booked transfers and guided days. The southern road route needs a more deliberate transfer service or a packaged regional tour; do not assume small-town public transport will match hotel checkout times. If your budget requires reducing costs, remove a region or a hotel move before stripping every transfer buffer from the plan.
South Africa itineraries FAQ
Can I drive the Garden Route in a seven-day holiday?
You can focus a week on a selected southern-coast section, particularly if you arrive and leave through suitable airports. Adding a full Cape Town stay and a distant safari to the same week makes the journey much less relaxed. Decide whether the road trip or the city is the priority.
Should I combine Kruger and the Garden Route?
Only when you have enough time for a separate flight and its ground transfers. They are different regions, not adjacent stages of one short drive. A southern route with Addo is a more geographically coherent alternative when the coast is the main purpose.
Do these itineraries include tickets and park fees?
No. They are editorial route examples. Check conservation charges, accommodation, activities, vehicle terms and transfers separately, including anything a lodge quote excludes. The duration table is not a statement that every suggested activity is available on every date.
