South Africa Airports & Transfers: Arrival Guide

Choose your South African arrival airport around the first overnight stop and the final part of your route. Johannesburg is useful for the northeast and connections; Cape Town suits a Cape-focused holiday; Durban serves KwaZulu-Natal. A lower airfare can lose its value if it adds another domestic flight, a long transfer and a hotel night. Compare the complete journey before choosing where to land.
Which airport fits your route?
On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to compare all columns.
| Gateway | Most useful starting point | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| O. R. Tambo, Johannesburg (JNB) | Gauteng, connecting flights and a northeast safari | Connection protection, airport transfer and the actual lodge's onward route |
| Cape Town (CPT) | Cape Town, Winelands and a Western Cape route | Arrival time, accommodation check-in and prearranged transfer |
| King Shaka, Durban (DUR) | Durban, KwaZulu-Natal coast and inland extensions | Transfer distance to the booked coastal town or mountain base |
| Regional safari airport | A particular Kruger-area lodge or park sector | Lodge collection, baggage restrictions and which airport the property recommends |
A two-centre Cape Town and safari holiday need not return to its starting city. Price an open-jaw international ticket alongside a return ticket with separate domestic flights. The first may reduce backtracking; the second may be cheaper on your particular dates. Record the number of travel days as well as the cash total. See the itinerary guide before locking in airport choices.
Confirm airport codes in the booking itself. Johannesburg-area alternatives are separate airports, and an itinerary with an airport change needs a road transfer rather than a simple terminal walk. Likewise, a listing described as a Kruger flight might arrive outside the national park, with a substantial transfer still required.
Arriving at O. R. Tambo
Decide between an arranged driver, an approved taxi or app-based collection, and Gautrain according to your arrival time and exact address. A rail journey is useful only if the final station-to-hotel leg is also practical. With children, multiple cases or a late arrival, a confirmed door-to-door transfer can make the first evening easier to manage.
The Gautrain operator's information explains ticketing and current service arrangements. Check its journey planner for your date instead of assuming that trains run all night. Keep the same accepted card for entry and exit, and arrange the onward pickup before leaving the station. Do not choose accommodation merely because its marketing says it is “near Gautrain”; compare the actual route from the station entrance.
For a driver collection, request the meeting point, company name, vehicle details and an after-hours contact in writing. Keep that confirmation available offline. If your flight is late, contact the booked provider rather than accepting an unsolicited replacement. A transfer confirmation should state whether the driver monitors the flight and how long waiting is included.
Arriving at Cape Town International

Airports Company South Africa lists authorised taxis, shuttle services and app-based operators for Cape Town. Use the airport's designated collection arrangements and disregard unsolicited offers in the terminal. Compare a fixed transfer quote with an app estimate, including luggage, child seats and any late-arrival surcharge.
The MyCiTi airport page currently states that its airport service is suspended. Its older route description remains below that notice; do not treat that text as evidence that the A01 airport bus is operating. MyCiTi city services are a separate question and can still be relevant after arrival.
Discuss the approach route with your accommodation or transfer operator. The current FCDO safety advice warns against navigation shortcuts around the airport and identifies the main airport approach via the N2. Have the final address and entrance instructions ready before leaving the terminal. A guesthouse on a residential street may use a different vehicle entrance from the address shown on a map.
If collecting a rental car, add time for the desk, payment checks and the vehicle inspection. A flight arrival time is not a realistic city-hotel arrival time. Consider taking a transfer first and collecting the car later if you will spend several days in Cape Town without needing to drive.
Durban and regional arrivals
King Shaka is a gateway to a large province rather than a universal starting point for every KwaZulu-Natal destination. Ask for a quote to the actual hotel, not simply “Durban”. A stay on the north coast, a city hotel and a Drakensberg base create very different onward journeys. If the transfer consumes most of the remaining daylight, stay near your initial destination and start the longer leg the following morning.
For a safari connection, start with the lodge's written recommendation. Hoedspruit, Kruger Mpumalanga International and Skukuza serve different accommodation areas. The SANParks directions illustrate why the nearest airport name alone does not settle the transfer. A private reserve entrance and a national park gate are not interchangeable meeting points.
Small-aircraft baggage rules can differ from those on your international ticket. Ask about weight, soft-sided cases, camera bags and mobility equipment before paying. If a lodge quotes a transfer, establish whether it is shared or private and whether the return time works for your departing flight. See the safari planning guide for the differences between park and private-reserve stays.
Connections and separate tickets

Check whether a connection is sold as one protected itinerary. Separate tickets can leave you responsible for buying another flight if the incoming service is delayed. Baggage through-checking, recheck requirements and immigration procedures also depend on the itinerary. Ask the airline to confirm these arrangements rather than inferring them from a short connection displayed by a booking site.
Allow for passport control, baggage collection, customs and reaching the correct departure area. Leave additional margin when travelling with checked sporting equipment, children or prearranged assistance. For an expensive lodge arrival or the last international flight home, an overnight buffer can protect more value than squeezing the itinerary into one continuous travel day.
Documents and the first hour
Keep your passport, required permission to enter, accommodation details and onward arrangements accessible. Visa rules depend on nationality and purpose, so use the dedicated Visa & Entry guide. Customs is separate: SARS requires the online Traveller Declaration before entering or leaving South Africa, subject to limited exceptions. Save its confirmation and follow the instructions received.
Do not leave essential medication, vehicle collection documents or your first-night contact details only inside checked luggage. If baggage is delayed, report it at the airport and retain the reference before departing. Photograph the baggage tag and keep receipts for necessary purchases if your insurer requires them.
Before leaving the terminal, confirm that you can contact the person collecting you. That might mean enabling a prearranged roaming plan, activating a compatible eSIM or buying a local SIM. The Travel Essentials guide explains why a data-only eSIM is different from a local voice service. Avoid making a major unplanned cash withdrawal simply because a helper approaches you.
Plan the departure as carefully as arrival
Check the airline's latest check-in and baggage deadlines, then add your road journey and a delay buffer. Obtain a fresh transfer quote if the return starts in a different town. Keep rented equipment return, fuel stops and tax-refund procedures out of the last few minutes before check-in. If your final stay is remote, move closer to the departure airport the night before rather than relying on an optimistic map estimate.
Reconfirm special assistance and accessible transport directly with both the airline and provider. Specify whether you need to remain in a wheelchair during transfer, whether equipment folds and whether you need help between the vehicle and the terminal. A generic “assistance requested” note may not communicate the practical details required for a smooth journey.
Airports & Transfers FAQ
Should I fly into Johannesburg or Cape Town?
Choose the airport that fits the first part of your route, then compare the full cost of onward flights, transfers and hotel nights. Cape Town suits a Cape-focused trip; Johannesburg often fits Gauteng and northeast connections. An open-jaw ticket may avoid returning to the starting city.
Can I use the MyCiTi bus from Cape Town airport?
The operator's airport page currently says the airport service is suspended. Recheck that notice before travelling and arrange an authorised transfer unless the operator explicitly confirms service has resumed.
Is the nearest Kruger airport always the best?
No. Ask the booked lodge or camp which airport and entrance work for that specific stay. Transfers, gate arrangements, baggage rules and flight timing can matter more than straight-line distance.
Can I book a tight domestic connection after an international arrival?
Check protection, baggage and immigration arrangements with the airline. Separate tickets need more caution because a missed onward flight may be your responsibility. Use a larger margin when the next booking is costly or remote.
