Rome works best with walking inside a small sightseeing area and public transport between areas. Use the metro for longer connections, buses and trams where they fit your route, and a licensed taxi when luggage, fatigue or timing justify the extra cost. A car usually adds parking and restricted-zone complications to a central sightseeing stay.
Choose how to travel between sightseeing areas
| Journey | Useful starting choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Termini to the Colosseum area | Metro, then the signed entrance approach | The correct direction and your ticketed gate. |
| Termini to the Vatican side | Metro A toward Ottaviano or Cipro, then walk | Museums and basilica have different entrances. |
| Pantheon, Trevi and Piazza Navona | Walk between nearby stops | Heat, cobbles and time for camera pauses. |
| Historic centre to Trastevere | Walk across a bridge or use a suitable bus/tram | Current routes and service changes. |
| Late return or several bags | Licensed taxi or an operating night service | Fare basis, destination and the actual service available. |
Use ATAC’s official maps for the network and service notices. The Map & Orientation guide helps organize sightseeing by district; it is useful to establish where you are staying before selecting a transport pass.
Tickets and passes: current published prices
| Ticket | Price | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| BIT | €1.50 | 100 minutes; metro use has a single-journey restriction. |
| ROMA 24H | €8.50 | 24 hours from first validation. |
| ROMA 48H | €15 | 48 hours from first validation. |
| ROMA 72H | €22 | 72 hours from first validation. |
| CIS | €29 | Until midnight of the seventh day, including validation day. |
Prices and validity come from ATAC’s ticket catalogue. A pass makes sense when the journeys you will actually take justify its cost. Two separately chargeable BIT journeys cost €3; four cost €6, below a €8.50 24-hour pass. Six cost €9. Compare journeys rather than the number of buses boarded within one valid ticket period.
A public-transport pass and a museum city card serve different purposes. Check attraction reservations, included sites and validity before buying a combined product. Airport services and regional journeys may have separate fares; use the Airports & Transfers guide for airport choices.
Validate before you travel
Buying a ticket alone does not necessarily activate it. Follow the validation procedure for the paper, rechargeable or app product you purchased, and keep it available for inspection throughout the journey. On the metro, use the gates as directed. For buses and trams, validate or activate before travelling rather than waiting for an inspector.
The official BIT page explains the 100-minute ticket and its metro conditions. Leaving the paid area and beginning another metro journey can require a new ticket even when the clock has not expired. Follow the specific transfer rules rather than assuming unlimited metro re-entry.
Tap & Go: use one payment device consistently
ATAC’s Tap & Go guidance allows eligible contactless cards and supported NFC devices. Tap when changing transport and check the successful validation signal. Keep using the same physical card or the same phone/watch: switching to a digital version of the card can be treated as a different payment device.
The service is individual; one device cannot pay for several people travelling together. ATAC publishes a best-fare conversion to the €8.50 24-hour ticket when the relevant BIT purchase threshold is reached. Read the operator’s current rules and keep a separate valid payment method or ticket for each traveller.
Walking: shorter routes can still be tiring
The central sights are close enough for a rewarding walk, but crowds, cobbles, slopes and traffic crossings change the pace. Group Pantheon, Navona and Trevi together instead of returning across town between them. Put a meal or seated break between your reserved interior visit and an afternoon walk.
The Attractions guide includes three mapped sightseeing routes and approximate distances. In hot weather, choose fewer exposed stops and move longer walks to cooler parts of the day. A map’s walking estimate excludes entrance queues, photographs, stairs and rests.
Taxis, driving and car rental
Use an official taxi rank or an established booking channel, confirm the destination and ask how the fare is calculated. Consult Turismo Roma for official visitor transport information. Do not assume that an airport fixed fare applies to an ordinary city journey.
For a city-only trip, price the transport you need before renting a car. Restricted traffic zones, parking and hotel access can outweigh the convenience. For an outing outside Rome, compare rail, bus, a tour and car rental; check the Day Trips guide before choosing. Confirm ZTL access with your hotel or the relevant authority before driving toward central accommodation.
Accessibility and travelling with children
Confirm the accessible entrance, lift availability and onward path for the exact stations and venues you need. Use ATAC’s official site and its Transport Accessibility section for current guidance; a step-free station does not guarantee a step-free attraction approach. For a wheelchair, stroller or limited stamina, assess cobbles and slopes as well as map distance.
Check the operator’s current child eligibility rules before travel, especially when combining urban services, regional trains and airport transfers. Keep young travellers’ breaks in the itinerary and leave enough time to board without rushing.
Before leaving your accommodation
- Check current service notices and the return connection.
- Know which entrance your attraction ticket specifies.
- Have a valid ticket or supported individual contactless method.
- Keep the same device for Tap & Go transfers.
- Carry your accommodation address and a backup return plan.
