Rome Airports & Transfers: Fiumicino and Ciampino
Rome has two different airport arrivals to plan for: Fiumicino (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA). Check the airport code on your booking, then compare transfers to the address where you will stay. The fastest train to Termini is useful only if Termini is a sensible connection for that address.
For Fiumicino, Leonardo Express is a direct train to Termini; regional services serve other city stations. For Ciampino, Airlink combines a bus to the local railway station with a train to Termini. Official taxis can offer a direct trip, with fixed fares only when the stated conditions and destination zone apply.

Fiumicino: Leonardo Express to Termini
Leonardo Express makes sense when you want a direct rail journey to Termini and can manage the station-to-hotel leg. The scheduled train ride takes 32 minutes; the full transfer also includes leaving the aircraft, entry formalities where applicable, collecting luggage, reaching the platform and continuing from Termini.
Buy the correct product for your departure and follow its ticket instructions. City transport tickets do not cover Leonardo Express. A booked train journey and an onward metro journey are separate stages with their own conditions.
Before choosing this route, identify how you will get from Termini to the room. Walking with luggage, taking the metro and using a taxi create different final costs and levels of effort. A hotel close to the station may make the train especially straightforward; a distant apartment may make a direct vehicle more attractive.
Fiumicino: regional trains for other city stations
The FL1 route is worth checking when your accommodation connects more conveniently through Roma Trastevere, Ostiense or Tiburtina. It does not serve Termini. Search for the actual station you need and confirm the fare and onward route before comparing it with Leonardo Express.
Do not assume Roma Trastevere station is beside every address described as Trastevere. Likewise, arriving at a city station is not the same as reaching the building entrance. Use the Rome orientation guide and the accommodation’s arrival instructions to finish the journey.
Regional rail tickets have their own conditions. Read whether your selected ticket requires validation, activation or travel on a specified departure. If you change the plan after a delay, check whether the ticket allows it.
Ciampino: Airlink via the railway station
Ciampino Airlink costs €2.70 for the combined journey to Termini. A bus links the airport with Ciampino railway station, where you transfer to a train. The short bus leg is not the duration of the whole airport-to-Rome trip: train waiting and the onward ride add time.
This can suit travelers comfortable with a connection and manageable luggage. Check the timetable for the hour you expect to be ready, rather than only the scheduled landing time. If a flight arrives late, recheck whether the remaining connections suit your destination.
Airport coaches and city-bus connections
Airport coaches can offer other routes, but compare the operator’s current departure point, destination, ticket price, baggage terms and timetable. A low fare does not establish the fastest door-to-door journey, and a road transfer can be affected by traffic.
ATAC identifies city bus connections to Ciampino, including lines 520 and 720, on its ticket-purchase guidance. Check the current route and metro connection before selecting one. This can involve more stages than a direct coach or taxi.
The ordinary BIT city ticket is €1.50 with a 100-minute validity period and specific metro-use rules. See ATAC’s BIT conditions. Do not apply the city fare to every airport operator or assume an airport rail service is included.
Official taxis: verify the zone before boarding
Rome’s published fixed fare for a direct airport trip to an address within the Aurelian Walls is €55 from Fiumicino or €40 from Ciampino, per vehicle. The destination boundary matters. “Central Rome” in an accommodation listing is not proof that the address qualifies.
Use the official rank and identify a licensed Rome taxi. Show the written address and confirm the applicable fare before leaving. If the journey falls outside the fixed-fare conditions, ask how it will be charged. Request a receipt.
Compare the fare per vehicle with train tickets per person. Two adults paying €14 each for Leonardo Express spend €28 before any onward transport. Four adults would spend €56 before onward transport, while the quoted FCO fixed taxi fare is €55 if the zone, direct-route and vehicle-capacity conditions apply. This arithmetic does not guarantee that one vehicle can accommodate your party and luggage.

Before you leave the arrivals area
- Check the live onward timetable and any service alerts.
- Keep your hotel address, entry instructions and reception number offline.
- Confirm that the ticket or reservation names the correct airport and destination.
- Check the payment and ticket-validation instructions for that product.
- Save enough phone charge to contact the accommodation after a delay.
Use Aeroporti di Roma and your airline for current airport and flight information. Airline and terminal assignments can change; an old terminal list should not determine your route. Follow the signs for the service you booked.
Departure day and short layovers
Work backward from the airline’s stated airport-arrival requirement. Add the actual transfer, time to reach its departure point, a margin for service disruption and the practical needs of your group. The scheduled train ride alone is not a complete departure plan.
A short layover does not automatically allow a city visit. Entry eligibility, baggage handling, onward security, the airline’s check-in deadline and both transfers all matter. If those parts are uncertain, do not treat a generic number of layover hours as permission to leave the airport.
Frequently asked transfer questions
Does a Rome city pass include the airport train?
Check the exact product. Leonardo Express is outside the ordinary city-ticket system. Avoid buying a pass on the assumption that every journey with “Rome” in its name is included.
Is a taxi always faster?
No. A direct vehicle can simplify luggage handling, while a train avoids road traffic for its rail leg. The answer depends on traffic, waiting time and where you will stay.
Should I choose the airport by distance alone?
Compare the flight schedule, total fare, baggage conditions and transfer to your accommodation. The closer-looking airport may still require a connection that is less convenient for your trip.
