Rome Budget & Costs: Plan Your Per-Person Travel Spend

Plan your Rome trip: Travel Guide · Itineraries · Getting Around · Budget & Costs · Day Trips · Attractions · Where to Stay

Start your Rome budget with your actual room quote, then add each traveller’s own food, transport, attraction tickets and accommodation tax. Accommodation is usually the most variable part: dates, room type, location and cancellation conditions can change the total substantially. The examples here are planning allowances, not live hotel quotes or guaranteed restaurant prices.

The correct per-person budget formula

Per-person trip total = shared room total ÷ people sharing + that person’s accommodation tax + that person’s meals, transport, visits and other expenses. Divide shared charges only. A tax already charged per person must be added to that person’s budget, not divided again.

Example: two people share a room costing €180 per night for three nights. The room total is €540, so each person’s accommodation share is €270. If the confirmed tax were €6 per person per night, each adds €18, giving €288 per person before meals, transport and visits. The €6 tax is an illustration; use the rate confirmed for your actual property and eligibility.

Three sample daily spending plans

Editorial arithmetic examples, not surveyed market averages. Assumes two people sharing accommodation. Tourist tax, airport transfers, flights, shopping, insurance and other extras are excluded.
Allowance per person/dayEconomy exampleComfort exampleHigher-spend example
Shared accommodation share€50€90€160
Meals and non-alcoholic drinks€30€50€80
City transport€3€6€20
Sightseeing allowance€10€25€45
Illustrative subtotal€93€171€305

Use these examples to change the inputs, not to predict a booking price. A solo traveller paying for a whole private room cannot simply use the two-person accommodation share. A day with free outdoor sightseeing may need no admission spend; a museum day can exceed the allowance. Keep a separate contingency amount based on your own flexibility and cancellation risk.

Accommodation: compare the full payable price

Compare equivalent dates, occupancy and conditions. Check breakfast, taxes, cleaning fees, deposits, cancellation deadlines and whether payment is refundable. A cheaper room far from your chosen sights can add travel time and transport costs. An apartment can help with meals but may add cleaning or service fees.

Use Where to Stay to choose an area before searching rates. Confirm whether tourist tax is already included in the displayed payable total. If it is included, do not add it a second time.

Tourist tax: ask the property for your category

Rome’s accommodation tax varies by accommodation category and classification. Check exemptions, eligible ages, applicable nights and payment arrangements with the property. Turismo Roma’s official accommodation-tax page links the municipal rules and tariff information. Record the exact rate for your booking rather than applying one rate to every hotel or apartment.

For a group, keep a separate line for each person’s tax. This matters if exemptions or different lengths of stay apply. For room-only comparisons, show clearly whether the tax has been excluded.

Transport costs: buy for the journeys you need

ATAC publishes a €1.50 BIT, €8.50 ROMA 24H, €15 ROMA 48H, €22 ROMA 72H and €29 CIS weekly ticket. See the official tariff catalogue and Getting Around for validity, validation and exclusions.

If you walk within one district and make two chargeable urban journeys, your BIT spend would be €3. A pass is not automatically a saving. Add airport transfers and regional day trips separately unless the exact ticket explicitly covers the service. Taxi spending in the higher-spend example is only an allowance, not a quoted fare.

Admission costs: spread paid visits across the trip

Official amounts rechecked October 4, 2026 in the Attractions guide; reductions, optional services and tour prices excluded.
VisitPublished standard adult amountBudget distinction
Colosseum, Forum and Palatine€18Standard product; upgrades cost separately.
Vatican Museums€20 + €5 official online bookingA tour can have a different total.
Pantheon€7Concessions and worship arrangements differ.
Galleria Borghese€16 + €2 reservationExhibitions can add charges.
Castel Sant’Angelo€18Special access is separate.
Trevi controlled basin area€2Viewing from the surrounding square is separate.

The listed six paid visits total €88 at the amounts above. That is €29.33 per day when spread over three days, before transport and meals, and does not mean all six fit comfortably into a short visit. Use the Attractions guide and linked official sources to select visits and check your exact category.

Food and drink: compare menus before sitting down

Plan around the meals you want: a simple breakfast, a casual lunch and one longer dinner can suit a sightseeing day. Check the displayed menu, seating or service charges, drink prices and what is included. The examples allow different spending levels but do not promise a particular meal at that price.

Use Food & Drinks to place meals near your sightseeing area. Self-catering helps only if you will actually use the kitchen; compare the accommodation premium and shopping time too.

Where to save and where to spend deliberately

  • Group sights by area to reduce unnecessary transfers.
  • Combine paid interiors with freely accessible squares, bridges and park walks.
  • Pay for a guide when interpretation matters to you, comparing included admission and group size.
  • Check official ticket prices before comparing reseller packages.
  • Compare refundable and non-refundable accommodation against your real plans.
  • Keep day-trip travel, optional dome climbs and evening activities as separate lines.

Build your own trip total

Write one line for shared accommodation and any other shared purchases, then separate per-person lines for tax and daily spending. Multiply daily allowances by the number of days you will spend them; arrival and departure days may differ. Add the actual airport-transfer quote, chosen admission tickets and any day-trip fare. Check your payment provider’s foreign-currency fees if relevant.

For a manageable schedule use Itineraries; for excursions and optional car use Day Trips. Recheck the total after selecting dates and cancellable terms.
