China Visa & Entry: Tourism, Transit & Regional Rules

Check entry permission against your nationality, passport type, purpose, route and travel dates before paying for a non-refundable trip. China’s general visa-free arrangements, transit policies and regional schemes have different conditions. They are not interchangeable ways to obtain the same unrestricted stay.

Reviewed on 24 October 2026, this guide explains the decisions and points to official sources. It is not an individual eligibility ruling. Policies with end dates need a fresh check for later travel, and the airline’s boarding check does not replace the border authority’s entry decision.

Mainland China entry paths: distinctions to verify
PathCore questionDo not assume
General visa-free visitIs this passport and purpose covered on these dates? That every nationality or passport type qualifies
240-hour visa-free transitDoes the complete onward route meet the policy? That a return to the same country is qualifying transit
Regional scheme such as HainanIs the traveller, port and permitted area covered? That regional permission allows travel everywhere
Visa issued before travelDoes the visa cover purpose, entries and stay? That the validity date is the allowed length of each visit

Use the National Immigration Administration and the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for your application as starting points. A visa centre can handle application services, but its commercial appointment process is not itself the legal rule. Check the official instructions for your place of application.

Passports described casually as “from the same country” can have different categories or conditions. Emergency documents, official passports and complex nationality circumstances need specific attention. Do not substitute a friend’s experience or an old social-media report for your own document check.

China has visa-free arrangements for eligible ordinary-passport holders, with purpose and duration conditions that vary by policy. An October 2026 State Council report describes the expansion of unilateral 30-day access, but a statistics report is not a substitute for the current passport-specific eligibility list.

Check whether the arrangement remains in force on your actual entry date and whether it covers the purpose of your visit. A 30-day tourism allowance should not be assumed to permit employment, study or journalism. If the policy has a stated expiry, do not infer an extension for a later year.

Keep supporting trip information available, including accommodation and onward travel where relevant. Do not describe visa-free access as guaranteed entry. If your plan changes to a longer stay or another purpose, ask the competent authority before relying on the original arrangement.

240-hour visa-free transit

The NIA transit-policy explanation describes a scheme for eligible travellers continuing through China to a third country or region, using specified ports and remaining within permitted areas. The current list and geographic conditions must be checked against the complete itinerary, not just the length of the stop.

The place immediately before mainland China and the next destination matter. A simple return to the same country is not automatically qualifying third-country transit. Confirmed onward transport and the actual entry and exit ports are also part of the assessment; a tentative booking or an unsupported land crossing can change the result.

Do not assume that a route fits merely because it lasts fewer than ten calendar days. The official permitted-stay calculation, allowed areas and individual entry decision control. Ask the airline and relevant authority to check the exact sequence before booking. If a connection changes, reassess the entire route rather than keeping the old eligibility conclusion.

Hainan and other regional arrangements

The NIA regional-policy explanation describes Hainan visa-free entry for eligible ordinary-passport holders and specified short-stay purposes. The policy’s permitted area is Hainan, with its own port and duration conditions. A flight onward to another mainland region should not be assumed lawful under a Hainan-only permission.

Separate the immigration decision from the resort decision. Sanya and Haikou are different arrival and accommodation bases on a large island. A hotel booking in one city does not establish the correct entry route, and a beach package does not override passport requirements.

Other regional or group arrangements can have different conditions. Read the actual official policy instead of combining the most generous parts of several schemes. If your trip crosses regional boundaries or changes purpose, obtain a clear answer before travel. The map guide provides geography but is not an immigration-area map.

When you need a visa

If no suitable visa-free policy applies, arrange the correct visa before travel. Check the required category, application jurisdiction, documents, appointment or biometric process and processing time through the responsible embassy or consulate. Do not assume a tourist itinerary can be regularised after arrival.

After issue, inspect the passport details, number of entries, validity and permitted stay. The period during which a visa may be used for entry is a different concept from how long each entry allows you to remain. A single-entry visa can also be affected by leaving mainland China during the trip.

For a planned longer stay, work, study or other regulated activity, use the appropriate official process. A hotel’s willingness to accept a long booking does not establish permission for that purpose. Keep time for application uncertainty and avoid treating a service provider’s estimated processing date as an official guarantee.

Hong Kong, Macao and mainland re-entry

Hong Kong and Macao have separate entry arrangements from mainland China. A route that includes them needs each entry checked on its own terms, including the return to the mainland. A rail connection or shared travel package does not remove the boundary formalities.

If travelling on a visa, confirm that the number of entries supports the entire route. If using visa-free access, check the conditions for the subsequent mainland visit rather than assuming an earlier admission automatically covers it. Transit eligibility can also change according to the places immediately before and after China.

Keep the route written in sequence with dates and transport. This is more useful when asking an official question than saying you are “visiting China for a week”. Include the passport category, arrival port, onward destination and intended places of stay so the authority can assess the actual plan.

Accommodation registration and the stay itself

Hotels register foreign guests through check-in. For other lodgings, the guest or host must register with local public security within 24 hours of arrival. The NIA announcement of 21 September 2026 extended online registration nationwide through official NIA web, app and mini-program channels. In-person registration remains available; retain confirmation that the process is complete.

Keep the registration record and update arrangements when your circumstances require it. A host’s informal assurance is not the same as a completed process. Ask for help early if the system, address or document details create a problem, using the local public-security channel or NIA 12367 service.

Do not overstay while waiting for a new flight, application or answer. Contact the competent authority before the permission expires and keep evidence of the advice and any formal application. The Useful Contacts guide distinguishes immigration assistance from airline, hotel and consular support.

Visa & Entry FAQs

Does a ten-day holiday automatically qualify for 240-hour transit?

No. Passport eligibility, the onward third-country or region sequence, ports, permitted areas, confirmed transport and the official stay calculation all matter.

Can Hainan-only visa-free entry cover a later Beijing visit?

Do not assume so. A regional scheme has its own permitted area. Establish a separate valid basis for any onward mainland travel before booking.

Does a Hong Kong side trip use a mainland visa entry?

Leaving and returning to the mainland can affect your entry permission. Check the actual visa or visa-free conditions for the full route rather than treating Hong Kong as an ordinary domestic excursion.
