China Travel Essentials: Phones, Language & Daily Planning

The most useful preparation for China is often ordinary: a hotel address you can show without internet, a phone number that receives verification messages and a confirmed route from the arrival station. These details matter more than memorising a long list of national statistics.

This guide covers daily travel preparation. Entry permission belongs in Visa & Entry, spending in Travel Costs & Money and risk preparation in Health & Safety. Mainland China is the focus; do not assume that Hong Kong or Macao use the same practical systems.

Keep the right documents accessible

Keep the original passport and confirmed reservations available for transport, accommodation and other document checks. The document used to book a train or named admission should match the traveller and the document carried. A photograph of a passport can be useful backup but is not a substitute wherever the original is required.

Store a separate copy of key travel details securely and know how to contact your embassy or consulate if the passport is lost. Avoid carrying every backup in the same bag or device. Keep account recovery and insurance details accessible to a trusted travelling companion where appropriate.

Check the actual arrival and departure dates against your permitted stay. A hotel reservation, tour booking or return flight does not itself establish immigration permission. The Visa & Entry guide separates the common entry paths and the questions to resolve before departure.

Prepare the phone before departure

Confirm whether your phone is unlocked and what your roaming, SIM or eSIM arrangement actually provides. Data access, a local number and the ability to receive messages on your usual number are separate features. An account that depends on a verification text can become awkward if the registered number is unavailable.

Set up payment and transport accounts while you have time to resolve verification issues. Download the languages and maps you expect to use offline, and save the hotel’s Chinese address, arrival instructions and booking reference as screenshots. Keep essential information readable without signing into a service that may not be accessible.

For a mainland domestic flight, check the power bank itself before packing. The official explanation of the CAAC rule effective from 28 June 2025 prohibits power banks without a CCC mark, with an unclear CCC mark, or belonging to recalled models or batches on domestic flights. A CE or FCC mark is not the stated CCC mark. Also check the airline’s capacity and carriage rules for the actual flight. Having carried the device on an international arrival does not establish acceptance on the next domestic leg.

Understand mainland internet access

For a full setup sequence, use Internet, SIMs & Apps in China: compare roaming, a travel eSIM and a mainland SIM; keep account-verification SMS reachable; prepare Amap, WeChat and an offline arrival note. This essentials page remains the shorter daily-preparation checklist.

Some familiar online services are blocked or restricted on mainland networks. A website working at home does not establish that it will load from the hotel or a local mobile connection. Plan essential communication and navigation around services you have verified for the trip.

The FCDO China safety guidance explains the restrictions and notes that online services are subject to Chinese rules. Do not build the itinerary around an assumption that a particular workaround will be lawful or reliable. Your provider’s current terms and the actual connection both matter.

Keep a practical communication plan with family or travelling companions. Agree how to make contact if a usual app fails and where to meet if separated. For a guided outing, save the operator’s real contact channel and meeting point before leaving the hotel rather than relying on a link in an unreadable confirmation.

Use Chinese names as travel tools

Ask the hotel for its full Chinese name, street address and vehicle drop-off point. Save the exact station or airport name for each journey. Similar English spellings, an omitted district or a station suffix can send a driver or booking search to the wrong place.

Translation software is useful for simple requests, menus and signs, but it has limits. For allergies, medication, accessibility or a significant commercial agreement, use clear written details and obtain confirmation. Do not treat an approximate translation as a guarantee that a complex requirement has been understood.

Learn a few courteous phrases and allow extra time when asking for help. A staff member’s limited English does not mean that a service is unavailable. Show the confirmed booking and address, ask one question at a time and avoid handing over passwords or verification codes to an informal helper.

Electricity, time and packing

Mainland China uses China Standard Time, UTC+8, across the country. Check whether your booking platform displays local time and make sure phone calendars do not silently shift a departure. This is especially useful when arranging a late arrival or an onward international connection.

Electrical supply is generally 220 V at 50 Hz, with more than one socket form in use. Check the input label on each device and carry an adapter suitable for the sockets you expect. An adapter changes the connection shape; it does not convert an incompatible appliance’s voltage.

Pack for the actual regions and season. A northern city, a high-altitude town and a tropical coast can require different clothing on the same trip. Keep a small overnight set accessible during a long transfer and choose luggage you can manage through station checks, stairs and a hotel’s final approach.

On smaller screens, swipe or scroll horizontally to read the full table.

Build a manageable daily routine

Place the most fixed reservation first and keep the surrounding day geographically compact. Confirm the actual entrance and allow for security and walking. A map pin in the middle of a large museum or park may not identify the gate where visitors enter.

Use meals and rest as part of the plan rather than leftover time. After an intercity arrival, a nearby meal and short walk may be enough. Families and travellers with limited stamina can make the trip easier by keeping one demanding visit per day and an obvious route back to the hotel.

Carry water from a safe source and plan toilets, shade and indoor breaks where they matter. In a historic district, a short straight-line distance can involve steps, uneven paving or a major road. Ask about the actual route before assuming it is a simple walk.

Understand reservations and confirmations

A submitted order, a payment attempt and a confirmed admission are different stages. Check the named traveller, date, session and ticket status before leaving the hotel. Keep the confirmation available offline, including any instruction to use the original passport.

For a restaurant, performance or transfer, record the end point and cancellation terms as well as the meeting point. A pickup service may not include return travel. A city pass or bundled product may not cover the specific activity you want, even if it uses a familiar attraction photograph.

If a platform does not accept your document or phone number, use the operator’s published assistance route rather than inventing details. Your hotel can help with language, but it cannot turn an unconfirmed ticket into a valid reservation. The Useful Contacts guide helps identify the right provider for each problem.

The day before a regional move

Recheck the full station or airport name, departure time, baggage and document requirements. Confirm the local journey from hotel to terminal and leave time for queues. Do not let an attractive final-morning excursion compromise a fixed departure.

Tell the next hotel your expected arrival where useful, especially for a small property or pedestrian old-town address. Save reception instructions and the final vehicle approach. If a flight or train is delayed, use the operator and hotel’s official channels to update the plan.

Keep the next day’s essential items outside a bag that may be stored or checked. The transport guide explains rail and airport decisions, while Travel Costs & Money covers payment backups. A prepared transfer day can still be enjoyable without pretending it is a full sightseeing day.

Travel Essentials FAQs

Will my usual map and messaging services work?

Do not assume so. Mainland network restrictions and provider arrangements vary. Prepare offline information and a communication method you have checked for the trip.

Is a plug adapter the same as a voltage converter?

No. Check each device’s input label. A shape adapter does not make a voltage-incompatible appliance suitable for the local supply.

Can a passport screenshot replace the original on trains?

Do not rely on that. Carry the original document required by the operator and used for the booking; keep screenshots as backup information.
