Internet, SIMs & Apps in China: Set Up Before Arrival
Mainland China travel is easier when your phone can do four separate jobs: connect to data, receive verification messages, show a usable destination address and retrieve a confirmed booking. Buying a large data allowance does not automatically solve the other three. Prepare the first journey from the airport before testing your setup on a busy city pavement.
This guide covers a visitor’s mainland setup. Hong Kong and Macao have different networks and service arrangements: a plan that works there may exclude mainland China. For detailed payment instructions use Alipay & Weixin Pay; for reservations tied to your passport use High-Speed Trains & Tickets.
Choose a connection and keep your verification number

Start with your existing mobile provider. Ask whether mainland China is explicitly included, when the bundle starts, how much high-speed data it includes, whether tethering is allowed and what happens when the allowance ends. A regional “Asia” product is too vague a description to rely on. Get the answer for the exact plan and travel dates, rather than assuming that your normal international bundle applies.
A travel eSIM is an option only if your handset and the particular plan support it. Check the phone’s carrier lock and installation instructions before purchasing. Ask whether the product supplies calls and SMS or only data; a data-only plan cannot receive a text addressed to a new local telephone number. Decide separately how your normal number will receive bank and account-verification messages.
For a mainland SIM, the government service guide directs foreign visitors to operator service offices with their passport. China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom offer different plans. Ask the counter to explain activation, validity, included data, calls, top-up and cancellation. Keep the receipt and support details. Do not leave until you have tested the service on your own handset.

| Choice | Useful for | Question before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Existing-number roaming | A short visit with one familiar account | Mainland coverage, SMS reception and daily charges? |
| Travel eSIM | A compatible phone and a prearranged data connection | Data only or calls/SMS; activation trigger; hotspot rules? |
| Mainland operator SIM | A local number and local operator support | Passport registration, handset compatibility and plan expiry? |
| Wi-Fi as a supplement | Downloads at a confirmed hotel or service desk | How is access authenticated, and what is the mobile backup? |
On a dual-SIM phone, write down which line supplies data and which receives account messages. Review the device’s data-switching settings so that an exhausted travel allowance does not silently move chargeable data to your home line. Receiving SMS, sending SMS and answering a call may have different roaming terms. Ask your provider instead of treating all three as one service.
At the airport: test the journey you actually need
If you want help on arrival, identify the official airport service point before following someone offering a SIM in the concourse. Pudong’s published international-traveller services include SIM sales and portable Wi-Fi rental in an integrated arrivals service zone. This is a specific airport service, not evidence that every Chinese terminal has the same desks, hours or products.
After activation, turn off Wi-Fi briefly and load a fresh page using mobile data. Send a message to your agreed contact, open your saved hotel destination and check a small account-verification task while assistance is nearby. A signal icon alone does not establish that a plan is ready. Restore Wi-Fi only after the mobile test succeeds.
Keep the first hotel’s Chinese name, street address, reception number and arrival instructions on the phone and on paper. Add the airport code and terminal. An address that exists only in an email attachment is a poor backup if the mail service is unavailable. For a late arrival, choose a transport method you can complete even if app setup takes longer than expected.
Amap, Chinese addresses and the final entrance
Amap, also called Gaode, has an English map offering described by Shanghai’s official visitor guidance. Install the current version offered for your device and test its language settings. An English announcement does not establish that every account screen, place listing or additional service is translated on every platform.
Save the hotel’s Chinese name as well as the English brand. Check the district and street against the hotel’s own confirmation, especially for chains with several branches. For a railway station, retain the directional word: Beijing South and Beijing West are different destinations. For an attraction, save the actual public entrance; the centre of a palace, lake or mountain reserve may be nowhere near the visitor gate.
Try one walking route and one public-transport route before depending on the map. Look at the exit and the final approach, not just the coloured line. If your version supports offline resources, download and test the required area before departure. Still keep a written address: offline coverage may not include live departures, route changes or the information needed to summon a vehicle.
Build a small app kit with a clear job for each tool
On smaller screens, swipe or scroll horizontally to read the full table.
| Job | Tool or information | Preparation that matters |
|---|---|---|
| Messages and provider contact | WeChat plus a second agreed contact method | Activate your own account; agree how your hotel or guide will contact you |
| Maps and addresses | Amap and Chinese destination text | Save the correct branch, gate and station |
| Merchant payments | Alipay or Weixin Pay | Link an eligible card and complete requested checks before depending on it |
| Intercity trains | Official China Railway 12306 | Verify passenger documents; distinguish an order request from an issued ticket |
| Ride hailing | DiDi through an available official channel | Check the pickup point, vehicle and destination before confirming |
| Translation | A tested translation or dictionary tool | Prepare offline resources and short Chinese address notes |
WeChat is useful for communicating with a provider and opening its official service channel, but a chat message is not a railway ticket or museum reservation. Keep the provider name and the actual confirmation together. Likewise, installing a payment app does not mean every mini-program accepts your document, number or linked card. Follow the specific operator’s booking process.
The government service guide lists DiDi among ride-hailing options. Before confirming a ride, read the destination and pickup instructions carefully. A large station may have a designated pickup floor or bay. Follow the marked route, compare the vehicle registration with the booking and avoid trying to arrange pickup on a restricted station road. If the app cannot complete the booking, use the official taxi queue or a previously confirmed transfer.
For translation, prepare short statements with one task each: the correct station, a room request or a food ingredient question. A long paragraph with several alternatives is harder for a person to interpret and easier for software to distort. Save essential phrases as text and images. Where an instruction has serious consequences, obtain help from the actual operator rather than relying on an automatic translation alone.
Understand network access and protect the fallback
The FCDO’s mainland China advice warns that services including Google, Facebook, YouTube and X are blocked and that VPN use is subject to Chinese rules. Do not build an arrival plan around a promised workaround. Ask a connectivity provider what its specific service supports and comply with local law; neither an “international” label nor an eSIM format is an access guarantee.
Download the documents you need before leaving a working connection: hotel confirmations, passenger details, insurance assistance information and the next transfer. Keep private copies protected by the phone’s normal security controls. Do not place passport scans or payment-code screenshots in a public shared album merely to make them easier to find.
If an essential service fails, separate the problems. Can you load any new page on mobile data? Can your normal number receive a message? Does only one app fail? Can reception open the provider’s official channel? Work through the failed layer before deleting accounts or changing your registered number during a transfer day. A small amount of cash and the paper address keep the problem from stopping the whole journey.
A useful rehearsal before the flight
Put the phone into airplane mode and try to find the first hotel address, arrival confirmation and next morning’s plan. If you cannot retrieve them without a connection, the offline backup is incomplete. Re-enable the connection and check that you can receive a verification message on the number registered with important accounts.
Keep charging equipment and an eligible power bank accessible, while checking the current airline and domestic-flight battery rules in Travel Essentials. Tell your travelling party where the meeting point is if phones stop working. Children and companions should have the hotel address too, without needing access to the main traveller’s bank or payment account.
Internet, SIMs & Apps FAQs
Do I need a Chinese phone number for every app?
No single number rule covers every service. Some visitor-facing apps accept overseas numbers, while particular booking or verification flows may differ. Check the actual service before paying for a local-number plan.
Does a data-only eSIM replace SMS roaming?
No. Data access and receipt of messages sent to your normal telephone number are separate. Confirm how that number will remain reachable for account verification.
Can I rely only on hotel Wi-Fi?
That leaves gaps during airport arrivals, station transfers and street navigation. Prepare mobile access or a clearly workable offline route and a staffed transport fallback.
What is the most useful offline item?
The provider-confirmed Chinese hotel name and address, reception contact and arrival instructions. Save the correct branch and keep a paper copy for the first transfer.
