Shanghai can support very different spending patterns within the same neighbourhood. A simple breakfast and a free riverfront walk cost far less than a hotel brunch and an observation deck, while accommodation can dominate either trip. Use the examples below to test your own choices. Currency and Payment Preparation

Prices in this guide use Chinese yuan, usually written CNY, RMB or ¥. One yuan divides into ten jiao and one hundred fen. Do not confuse a yuan amount with a dollar estimate, and check whether a hotel quote is per room, per night or for the entire stay.

Register before travelling where possible and make sure your number can receive verification messages. Card eligibility depends on the issuer and network; a successful app installation does not prove every payment will work. Keep an alternative card and some cash.

The arithmetic assumes two adults share a room and splits its price equally. It excludes international and intercity travel, insurance, visas, shopping and major theme-park tickets. The three-day figure is three daily subtotals, not the complete price of a four-night stay: add the extra room night and any arrival or departure spending separately.

Replace every allowance with an actual quote for your dates. A solo traveller paying for the same room would budget 585 or 1,340 yuan per day under these assumptions. Families need to price the actual room occupancy, beds and child-ticket rules rather than multiplying an adult example mechanically.

Pay as You Go or Buy a Pass?

The municipal metro guide lists an 18-yuan 24-hour metro pass and a 45-yuan 72-hour pass, with Maglev and specified suburban railway exclusions. The city’s transport page also reports a 2026 fare consultation, so verify the price at purchase rather than assuming an older tariff will remain unchanged.

At an illustrative 4-yuan fare, four trips total 16 yuan while five total 20 yuan: that is when an 18-yuan pass begins to help in this example. Spend Where It Changes the Trip

Choose one skyline experience if the view is the main goal; compare a tower ticket with a river cruise rather than purchasing both automatically. A public ferry is a short transport crossing, not a substitute sold as the same sightseeing product. In poor visibility, free waterfront walks may offer better value than a high observation deck.

Fees, Deposits and Longer Visits

Read the currency and cancellation terms before confirming a room. A deposit or card pre-authorisation can reduce available funds even when it is not the final charge. With international cards linked to a payment app, check the displayed service fee before paying; do not assume every transaction is free.
