Longer Stays in Shanghai: Bases, Housing & Costs
A longer visit changes what makes a good base. A river view may matter less than a useful metro station, laundry, a grocery shop and somewhere quiet to sleep. This guide concerns the practical cost of spending more time in Shanghai; permission to live or work in China is a separate legal question covered through the China entry resources.
Choose a Daily-Life Base
Central Jing’an and the former French Concession area suit travellers who want familiar cafés, food options and walkable local routines. People’s Square offers strong transport connections, but a major road outside the room may affect sleep. Lujiazui can work for Pudong business stays; a central Puxi base usually reduces repeat river crossings for an older-city sightseeing programme.
Visit the street at the times you expect to leave and return if you can. Check the building entrance, lift, delivery access and the distance to the correct metro exit. A listing’s district label can cover a much larger area than the neighbourhood you have in mind. Compare Where to Stay before committing.
Hotel, Serviced Apartment or Rental?

| Type | Why consider it | What to confirm in writing |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel | Reception, predictable short-stay service | Weekly terms, laundry cost, breakfast, quiet room and desk. |
| Serviced apartment | Kitchen and more domestic space | Actual cooking equipment, cleaning schedule, utilities and guest registration. |
| Residential rental | Potentially useful for a longer lawful stay | Landlord authority, contract, deposit, repairs, registration and cancellation. |
A kitchen photograph does not establish that cookware, a hob or a washing machine is included. Ask about ventilation, heating and cooling, internet arrangements and whether bedding or cleaning is extra. A low monthly rent may require a longer minimum term and a substantial deposit; it is not directly comparable with a cancellable week in a hotel.
Use the city’s Rent in Shanghai resources for official guidance. Verify the property and contract before transferring money. This page does not certify any private listing, agent or lease.
A Transparent One-Week Example

| Component | Calculation | Example CNY |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | 7 nights × 500 | 3,500 |
| Food | 7 days × 120 | 840 |
| Local transport | 7 days × 25 | 175 |
| Laundry and household items | One allowance | 150 |
| Activities | One allowance | 350 |
| Subtotal | 3,500 + 840 + 175 + 150 + 350 | 5,015 |
This example assumes one adult pays the full room bill. It excludes deposits, long-distance travel, insurance, visa costs and major shopping. It is a model prepared on 24 October 2026, not a Shanghai rent survey. If two adults share that room, accommodation per adult becomes 1,750 yuan, but food and personal spending still need separate budgets.
Build a Sustainable Routine

Leave some days unprogrammed. A neighbourhood breakfast, a museum gallery and a short park walk can create a better week than seven full sightseeing schedules. Choose a grocery shop and laundry option early, keep a regular route back to the accommodation and avoid carrying all documents on every casual errand unless required.
For remote-work plans, confirm lawful permission and the connectivity your work needs before booking. A tourism stay is not a blanket work authorisation, and a café connection is not a guaranteed office. Consider noise, power sockets and a proper desk if those affect your day.
Registration and Extending the Trip
Ask who will complete accommodation registration and what documents are needed. Hotels and non-hotel stays have different processes; the China Visa & Entry guide links the national authority and explains why staying longer does not itself extend an entry permission. Confirm your permitted stay before agreeing to a long booking.
One stable Shanghai base can support occasional excursions to the Lower Yangtze, but repeated day trips also have a transport cost. Compare an overnight move with a return trip in Day Trips and China itineraries. Keep the room-night count explicit if you pay for accommodation in two cities on the same date.
Longer Stays & Costs FAQs
Is a serviced apartment always cheaper than a hotel?
No. Compare the full stay, including cleaning, utilities, deposits, minimum terms and cancellation. A lower nightly headline can hide a less flexible total.
Can I use this budget as a rent estimate?
No. The example is a short-stay planning model with explicit assumptions, not a local residential rental survey.
Does a longer hotel booking extend my visa?
No. Accommodation reservations and immigration permission are separate. Check your entry conditions and permitted stay with the national authority.
