New York City Restaurants: Choose a Meal and a Neighbourhood
Choose a New York restaurant by the occasion and location first. A food counter before a museum, a seated lunch after a Lower East Side walk and dinner near your evening venue solve different needs. These established options are useful examples of those choices, not a claim to have identified every best restaurant in the city.
Current menus, waits and reservation policies can change. This shortlist provides the decision and official source; Food & Drink explains the dishes and eating traditions without duplicating each venue description. Our USA restaurant guide has a country-wide selection and is not repeated here.
Choose the Kind of Stop
On small screens, swipe or scroll this table horizontally. Keyboard users can focus the table area and use the arrow keys.
| Venue | Meal or occasion | Planning consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Katz’s Delicatessen | A deli meal on the Lower East Side | Substantial portions, queues and counter/table service arrangements |
| Russ & Daughters shop or cafe | Smoked fish, bagels and related dishes | Houston Street takeaway shop differs from Orchard Street seated cafe |
| Veselka, East Village | Ukrainian food and a neighbourhood meal | Check the real service hours and table policy for your day |
| Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop, Greenpoint | A slice or pie during a Brooklyn outing | Use 110 Franklin Street; the wood-fired Greenpoint venue is separate |
None is a necessary stop for every traveller. Choose the food and service that fit your party, then compare the current menu, dietary suitability and journey.
Katz’s Delicatessen: Make the Deli Meal the Point

Katz’s is at 205 East Houston Street, at Ludlow Street. Choose it for a traditional deli meal rather than assuming it is a quick, inexpensive sandwich stop. Allow time to understand the ordering arrangement, choose a portion and eat without rushing to a fixed admission slot.
Keep the ticket given to you on entry if staff use that system, and ask where to order or pay if the room is busy. Counter and table service can have different queues. Do not infer that an outside queue is a guaranteed wait for a table. The official visiting page gives the current opening pattern and group arrangements.
Pair the meal with nearby Lower East Side streets or a separately booked Tenement Museum tour. That is more practical than crossing Manhattan purely for lunch between timed visits uptown. If pastrami is not your preference or dietary needs do not fit, choose another meal instead of treating a famous name as compulsory.
Russ & Daughters: Choose the Shop or the Cafe

The original shop is at 179 East Houston Street; the cafe is at 127 Orchard Street. They offer different ways to enjoy the same food tradition. Choose the shop for a counter order and the cafe when you want a seated meal. Do not book your day around the assumption that the original shop provides restaurant seating.
The current official locations page states that the cafe is walk-in and describes how its wait list works. Check that page for your day, especially around holidays. A walk-in venue can still require a substantial wait; a timed museum tour immediately afterwards may leave little margin.
Read the menu as a complete order: bread, fish, spread and sides may be priced differently. If buying takeaway, identify a suitable place to eat without occupying a residential entrance. This is a useful Lower East Side morning or lunch choice, with other city branches available when their location better fits your route.
Veselka: A Ukrainian Meal in the East Village

The East Village restaurant is at 144 Second Avenue. Choose it for Ukrainian dishes such as varenyky or pierogi and a proper neighbourhood meal, not because every New York late-night meal needs to happen near Times Square. Read the menu for the fillings and preparation you want; the dish name alone does not answer dietary questions.
The official locations page distinguishes East Village hours and table arrangements from Williamsburg. Do not transfer a branch’s schedule or reservation policy to another branch. In particular, a historic reputation for round-the-clock opening is not a promise that every location serves 24 hours every day.
It pairs naturally with an East Village walk or an evening planned nearby. If a late meal is essential, check the exact day’s kitchen hours before your show starts and keep a second nearby option. Groups should confirm arrangements directly rather than assuming a small-party walk-in policy works for a large table.
Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop: A Greenpoint Food Stop

Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop is at 110 Franklin Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Choose it for New York-style slices or a whole pie during a day in this part of Brooklyn. Round, square and vegan options are listed on the official Slice Shop page. The separate wood-fired venue at 60 Greenpoint Avenue has its own identity and service arrangements; use the Franklin Street address for this stop.
As checked on 3 November 2026, the Slice Shop lists Sunday–Thursday hours of 11:30am–10pm and Friday–Saturday hours of 11:30am–1am. Recheck holiday opening and the current menu before travelling. Takeout and delivery are offered, but the shop warns that online ordering may pause during busy Friday and Saturday periods. An available website does not guarantee an immediate order.
Pair the meal with a Greenpoint walk or an evening already planned nearby. Choose your slices before joining the counter queue, and confirm ingredients directly when dietary needs matter. The shop currently states that it does not offer gluten-free pizza. For a long seated meal, compare the actual seating and service you need rather than assuming every pizzeria works the same way.
Keep Dinner and the Journey Home Together
For a pre-theatre dinner, choose near the theatre and tell the restaurant your required departure time. For a late jazz set, check the food and drink minimum separately from the performance ticket. Large parties, children and access needs benefit from direct confirmation before the day.
Read the final bill for tax and included service before tipping. Confirm allergies with staff, and do not infer full access from a single level entrance photograph. Nightlife and Getting Around help connect a good evening meal with a realistic route back to your hotel.
Travel Tip:
Pick a primary meal and a nearby backup in the same district. A long queue should change the meal, not force you to miss your next reservation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do these places all take reservations?
No. Service and booking models differ, and the Russ & Daughters cafe currently operates as a walk-in venue. Read each official branch’s policy.
Are the Russ & Daughters shop and cafe the same address?
No. The original shop is on East Houston Street and the seated cafe is on Orchard Street. Choose the correct one for the kind of meal you want.
Can I assume Veselka is open all night?
No. Check the exact location and day’s current hours. Historic opening patterns and another branch’s schedule are not a guarantee.
Why does this guide avoid fixed restaurant prices?
Menus and portion choices change. The useful comparison is your actual order, with tax and any service charges, using the current menu.
