Car Rental in Russia
Renting a car can help with a specific regional journey, but it is usually a poor substitute for rail or urban transport in central Moscow or Saint Petersburg. Decide the route, pickup and return before comparing prices. A vehicle is useful only if the driver, payment method, contract and roads all fit the trip.
Read current travel advice before making commitments. UK advice is against all travel to Russia; the US advisory is Level 4. Entry, insurance and payment access are separate from whether an institution or service is operating.
Where a car can and cannot help
On small screens, scroll the table horizontally to read both columns.
| Region or purpose | Decision and practical trade-off |
|---|---|
| Moscow / Saint Petersburg | Parking, traffic and city driving can outweigh convenience; compare rail, metro and a verified transfer. |
| Golden Ring towns | A planned road loop may connect smaller towns, but pickup outside the busiest city centre can be easier. |
| Kaliningrad region | City, Baltic coast and dune access are distinct; do not assume permission to cross an international border. |
| Baikal west shore | A vehicle reaches selected road-access places, not every shore or protected trail. |
| Altai valleys | Route, weather, vehicle restrictions, fuel and service gaps matter more than the lowest daily price. |
| Remote Far East | Specialist local transport can be more appropriate than ordinary self-drive rental. |
Golden Ring: connect towns without overloading the day
A road-based Golden Ring trip can connect places whose last approach is less convenient by rail. Choose a small group of towns and overnight stops rather than attempting the entire ring as a continuous sightseeing day. Vladimir and Suzdal are separate destinations; Yaroslavl, Rostov and Kostroma involve further journeys. Keep check-in, parking and daylight visible in the plan.
Ask where the car is actually collected, whether the desk is staffed at your arrival time and how late return works. A city-centre hotel may not provide parking at the door. Confirm the luggage drop-off, secure parking, charges and whether pedestrian or controlled streets affect the approach. Save the accommodation address in Russian and the provider’s verified contact offline.
Altai: a road photograph is not a driving contract

The Chuysky Trakt corridor and the Katun valleys can make a road journey attractive, but paved through-roads, gravel approaches and remote mountain tracks are different categories. Choose accommodation and stops along a coherent corridor. Lake Teletskoye or a high mountain route is not automatically a short extension from every Altai base.
Ask the rental company which roads and regions are allowed, whether unpaved driving is excluded and what assistance is actually available. A four-wheel-drive category does not create permission to use closed tracks, cross rivers or enter protected land. Check fuel, daylight, seasonal weather and return logistics with a competent local source before leaving the serviced corridor.
Documents and driver eligibility
Check the current rules for your driving licence and nationality with official travel guidance and the rental provider. An international driving permit, where required, supplements rather than replaces the original licence. The contract can impose its own age, licence-holding and additional-driver requirements. Do not infer eligibility from the fact that a comparison form accepts your name.
Ask for the required documents before paying a deposit, including the actual passport, licence, translation or permit requirements and whether every driver must be present. Foreign residents, temporary visitors and people travelling for work can face different practical questions. This guide does not replace nationality-specific legal advice.
Payment, deposits and the real total
Foreign-issued Visa and Mastercard cards do not work at Russian shops or ATMs; online acceptance and rental deposits also depend on the actual provider. A prepaid comparison voucher is not proof that the local desk accepts the deposit method. Confirm the payment instrument, named cardholder, deposit, currency, refund process and accepted documents directly.
Compare the complete rental: kilometres, additional driver, young-driver charges, child seat, winter equipment, parking, one-way fee, delivery, late pickup and cancellation terms. Do not invent a national average price or assume that a low headline rate includes the cover you need. Obtain the rental terms in a language you understand.
Insurance and restrictions
Read the excess, exclusions and claim process alongside your travel insurance and current travel advice. Tyres, glass, underbody, keys, towing or unpaved-road use may be treated separately. An excess-reimbursement product and a reduced-excess rental contract are different arrangements; ask which party must be paid first after damage.
Confirm permitted regions, one-way returns and border restrictions in writing. A road map showing a crossing does not establish that a border is open, the driver is eligible or the car is insured there. Protected-area permits do not override the rental company’s road restrictions, and a rental contract does not replace park permission.
Pickup, condition record and return
Check the exact counter or meeting point, not only the airport or city name. Confirm operating hours, flight-delay handling, assistance and what happens if the provider does not meet you. Allow time to read the contract and inspect the car before beginning a long journey.
Record existing damage with staff, fuel or charge level, tyres, lights and the supplied safety equipment. Ask how to report an incident and which number to call for assistance. At return, follow the agreed location and fuel terms, keep the handover record and understand when a deposit is released. Do not photograph restricted airport or security facilities as part of a vehicle check.
Compare a verified product before committing
An international car comparison page may show a location name without having a suitable vehicle, payment arrangement or bookable offer for your dates. Check the actual country, city, provider and contract; a general search is not a preselected Russia offer. A working affiliate redirect alone does not prove Russian inventory or commission eligibility.

Compare car rental options on Booking.com
This opens a general car comparison search. No Russian city, vehicle or rate is preselected. Enter your actual pickup location and dates and check the supplier’s terms. A suggested place name does not establish available vehicles; our Moscow sample search returned no cars.
When a driver or transfer is a better choice
For a necessary airport arrival, a short city stay or an unfamiliar winter route, compare a verified transfer or licensed local driver with self-drive. Confirm the operator, pickup, luggage, child seats, waiting policy and lawful payment. Do not describe every locally offered ride as an authorised tour or insured transfer.
Use Getting Around for rail and airport decisions, Where to Stay for parking and last approaches, and Walking & National Parks for the separate question of permitted outdoor access.
