National Sovereignty and Children’s Day

Observed on 23 April, this national holiday is associated with the founding of the Grand National Assembly and is also dedicated to children. Public ceremonies and school events are common.

Labour and Solidarity Day

1 May is a public holiday. Demonstrations or transport changes can occur in central urban areas, particularly in major cities.

Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day

19 May is a national holiday marked by official and public events.

Democracy and National Unity Day

15 July is a public holiday with official commemorations.

Victory Day

30 August is a national holiday marked by ceremonies and public events.

Republic Day

29 October is one of the most important national holidays. Cities may host concerts, ceremonies, flags and public celebrations.

Ramadan and Religious Holidays

Ramadan dates shift each year according to the Islamic lunar calendar. In major tourist areas, restaurants generally continue to operate, but daily rhythms may change in more traditional areas.

Ramadan Feast (Ramazan Bayramı) and Sacrifice Feast (Kurban Bayramı) are major holiday periods. Domestic travel can be extremely busy, and transport tickets may sell out well in advance.

Istanbul hosts major music, film, art and cultural programs throughout the year. Event calendars change annually, so verify dates close to travel.

Local and Regional Festivals

Event Planning in Istanbul
