Turkey Airports & Transfers: Choose the Right Gateway

Turkey has a broad domestic and international airport network, and choosing the right airport can significantly reduce transfer time. Istanbul is the main long-haul gateway, but travelers heading directly to the Mediterranean or Aegean coast may be better served by Antalya, Dalaman, Bodrum or Izmir.
Istanbul Airport (IST)
Istanbul Airport is the city’s principal long-haul and global connecting hub. It is on the European side of Istanbul and has extensive international and domestic services. Travelers staying in Sultanahmet, Taksim, Karaköy or other central districts should allow substantial time for the transfer, especially during busy traffic periods.
Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW)
Sabiha Gökçen is on the Asian side of Istanbul and is important for both international and domestic flights. It can be convenient for Kadıköy and other Asian-side districts, though reaching the Historic Peninsula or European-side neighborhoods takes longer.
Antalya Airport (AYT)
Antalya Airport is one of the country’s main leisure gateways and serves Antalya city as well as many resorts along the Mediterranean coast. Transfer time depends heavily on your final resort, so check the distance before booking.
Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB)

ADB serves Izmir and is useful for travelers visiting Çeşme, Alaçatı, Selçuk and Ephesus. It also offers domestic connections that can make multi-region itineraries easier.
Dalaman Airport (DLM)
Dalaman is a key gateway for Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Göcek and parts of the southwest coast. It can also be useful for some Marmaris itineraries. Airport transfers are an important part of planning because resort towns are spread across a wide area.
Milas-Bodrum Airport (BJV)
BJV serves Bodrum and nearby coastal areas. It is the logical airport for many Bodrum Peninsula holidays and can be more efficient than arriving through Izmir or Dalaman.
Ankara Esenboğa Airport (ESB)
Esenboğa serves Ankara, the national capital, and is useful for travelers with business, political or cultural reasons to begin in central Anatolia.
Trabzon Airport (TZX)
Trabzon is one of the most useful gateways for the eastern Black Sea region. Travelers planning highlands, monasteries and green mountain landscapes often use it as a starting point.
Domestic Flights
Because Turkey is large, domestic flights can save considerable time on routes such as Istanbul–Antalya, Istanbul–Izmir and Istanbul–eastern Turkey. However, airport transfers and security time should be included when comparing flying with rail or bus travel.
Airport Transfers
For Istanbul Airport bus routes and departure information, check Havaist. For metro connections, including the M4 line serving Sabiha Gökçen, use Metro Istanbul maps and timetables. Confirm the final service of the day and any interchange needed for your accommodation.
Major airports generally offer combinations of public transport, airport buses, taxis and private transfers. Resort airports may also have shared shuttle services arranged through hotels or tour operators.
For onward travel after landing, see the Turkey Transportation Guide.
Airport Hotels and Overnight Connections
If your itinerary includes a very early departure, late arrival or overnight connection, staying near the airport can reduce stress. For Istanbul especially, compare the distance between your terminal and your hotel before booking.

Istanbul Airport Choice: IST or SAW?
Choose by flight schedule and where you will stay. IST is on the European side and is usually more convenient for many long-haul arrivals. SAW is on the Asian side and can be attractive for Kadıköy or eastern suburbs. Neither airport should be described simply as “central”; both require onward transport.
Connections to Cappadocia
Visitors flying to Cappadocia normally use Kayseri or Nevşehir airports. Transfer arrangements are often coordinated with hotels or tour providers, and advance booking is sensible when arrival times are late.
Connections to the Southwest Coast
Dalaman and Bodrum airports serve broad tourism regions rather than a single compact resort. Check whether your hotel is in Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Göcek, Marmaris, Bodrum town or another peninsula area before deciding which airport is best.
Domestic Connection Strategy
A domestic flight can be efficient when the alternative is a full day on the road. However, an itinerary with too many flights can become fragmented. Try to group destinations so each flight represents a meaningful regional change.
Airport Practicalities

Allow time for security procedures and terminal navigation, especially at large airports. Keep medication, valuables and essential documents in hand luggage. If you arrive late, confirm whether your hotel reception or transfer service operates after midnight.
Which Airport Should You Choose?
Choose based on your first destination, not simply the cheapest fare. For a city break, Istanbul is obvious; for beach holidays, regional gateways can be far more efficient. Read Getting to Turkey for international arrival options and Top Destinations in Turkey to match airports with regions.
Gateway and Transfer Comparison
| Airport | Code | Useful first base | Transfer question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Istanbul Airport | IST | European-side Istanbul | Which metro interchange or Havaist stop serves your address? |
| Sabiha Gökçen | SAW | Asian-side Istanbul | Can M4 connect to the final neighbourhood at your arrival time? |
| Antalya | AYT | Antalya city and Mediterranean resorts | Which terminal, and how far is the actual resort? |
| İzmir Adnan Menderes | ADB | İzmir, Selçuk or the western peninsula | Does the train or shuttle match your destination and timetable? |
| Dalaman | DLM | Göcek, Fethiye and parts of the southwest | Is the hotel pickup direct or shared with other resorts? |
| Milas-Bodrum | BJV | Bodrum Peninsula | Is your hotel in the town or a distant bay? |
| Kayseri / Nevşehir | ASR / NAV | Cappadocia | Has the transfer been confirmed for the correct airport? |
Public Transport or a Reserved Transfer?
Public transport works best when the timetable, interchange and final walk are manageable with your luggage. In Istanbul, assess the complete metro journey rather than just the airport line. A coach can remove an interchange but remains affected by traffic. A taxi or private transfer may be more practical with bulky luggage, a late arrival or mobility needs, but the price and vehicle arrangements should be clear before departure.
For Istanbul's public network, consult Metro Istanbul; for airport coaches, use Havaist and Havabus as appropriate. These are different operators. Recheck the route, payment method and final departure on the day of travel. A familiar brand name does not establish that your chosen stop is served overnight.
Keep Istanbul Airport Changes Separate
If a booking requires changing from IST to SAW, allow for immigration, collecting bags, traffic, the next airline's check-in deadline and security. Neither a short straight-line distance nor an optimistic map estimate is enough. Read the conditions of the ticket seller and airline before buying such a connection. If the onward service departs the next morning, compare an overnight stay against a long late-night trip across the city.
Arrival Details That Matter on the Coast
Antalya's airport serves resorts distributed along a substantial coastline. A hotel marketed with the city name may be well beyond the centre. Bodrum and Dalaman similarly serve wider tourism areas. Ask whether a quoted transfer includes tolls, waiting time after delayed flights and child seats where required. With a shared service, check the order of stops rather than treating the road driving time as the time to your room.
Cappadocia transfers should state both ASR or NAV and the town: Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp or another village. Give the provider the flight number and accommodation name. For a return flight, request a pickup plan that allows for the airline's current check-in requirements. The wider route belongs in Itineraries; this page helps you solve the first and last transfer.
Compare Options for Your Dates
Booking.com flight search is unavailable from some browsing locations, including Türkiye in our October 2026 check. If the service shows its unavailable page, compare your route through the airline’s official website. Platform availability does not establish that a particular flight operates.
