Build a Madrid itinerary around one major reservation per day, then add nearby streets, food and time to rest. The routes below are editorial suggestions, with approximate time blocks for visits and movement rather than promises about queues. Check the opening day of each museum and the station on each rail booking before deciding the order.

Five full daysThe three-day plan, a second interest day and one excursionA rushed two-city day trip

One Day: Historic Madrid

Start at Puerta del Sol, walk west to Plaza Mayor and continue along Calle Mayor to Plaza de la Villa. Allow roughly 60–90 minutes with short stops rather than treating the walk as a race. Continue towards Almudena Cathedral and the Royal Palace. If a palace interior is your priority, book that visit and allow a substantial part of the morning for security and rooms.

Eat around Ópera or La Latina, then choose a quieter walk or return towards Gran Vía. Do not add the Prado as a compulsory second interior. For an art-first alternative, spend the morning at the Prado, have lunch near Barrio de las Letras and take a shorter Retiro walk. Both versions are complete days.

Three Days: Art, Streets and Room to Pause

Day 1 — Historic west

Use the one-day historic route. Put the palace visit before lunch if a suitable slot is available; use the cathedral exterior and surrounding squares as flexible stops. End in La Latina or Ópera, leaving the evening close to your accommodation. Weather and temporary access can change the best final viewpoint.

Day 2 — Prado, Retiro and Barrio de las Letras

Choose a focused Prado visit of approximately two to three hours, depending on your interest and stamina. Walk to lunch rather than booking another museum immediately afterwards. In settled weather, add an hour or more in Retiro; in heat or rain, shorten the outdoor section and rest. Finish around Plaza de Santa Ana or the literary streets. The order can reverse if your entry slot or forecast makes that easier.

For the art-focused second day, compare the Prado entry-only listing with the museum’s admission options. Reserve only after choosing your visit day, and check concession and refund rules.

Day 3 — One personal interest

Art lovers can make Reina Sofía the main visit. Market shoppers can use an actual Sunday or public-holiday morning for El Rastro. Families can prioritise a park and a short museum session rather than a long gallery day. For a street-focused day, link Gran Vía with Chueca and Malasaña, allowing breaks and checking the return route. These are alternatives, not a list to finish in one day.

Five Days: Add Depth and One Excursion

Use a fourth day for the museum or neighbourhood you deliberately omitted. Leave a late morning free after an evening out, or spend more time by Madrid Río. For day five, pick one destination from Day Trips. Toledo pairs rail with a transfer up to the old town; Segovia’s high-speed station is outside its historic centre. Both require more than the headline train time.

Book outward and return journeys together when reservations are required. Keep a margin between your return to Madrid and a flight or long-distance train. If leaving Madrid that evening, retain a city day instead of adding an excursion with no recovery time.

City Passes & Tickets

Madrid City Card combines a Zone A Tourist Travel Pass with participating discounts and benefits. It is not a universal all-attractions admission ticket. The official information counts the travel validity in calendar days, so activating it late can use a day for very few journeys. Check the exact product and current inclusions at Madrid City Card before paying.

For each traveller, write down the direct price after age or other valid concessions, any required reservation and the visits you genuinely plan. Add transport separately. A saving that depends on forcing extra museums into your day may cost more in fatigue than it saves in cash. Getting Around explains the different networks.

Adjust for Heat, Rain or Limited Mobility

In summer, put outdoor walks early and make the longest indoor visit or hotel break the middle of the day. In wet weather, choose one museum district instead of repeatedly crossing the city. For step-free travel, reduce the number of changes and confirm the entire route through Accessibility. Suggested walking blocks assume an unhurried but mobile traveller and should be adjusted to your needs.

Travel Tip:

Keep one unreserved block each day. It absorbs a late lunch, a queue, a lift outage or a view you want to stay with, without losing the next paid booking.
