Egypt Travel Costs & Money: Build a Realistic Budget

Egypt’s currency is the Egyptian pound, abbreviated EGP and also written as LE. The amount a trip costs depends on far more than the exchange rate: the number of bases, hotel category, domestic connections, paid sites, guiding and whether meals or excursions are bundled all change the total. A cheap-looking cruise or room can become a different purchase once the exclusions are added.
Build the budget in the currency in which each item is actually quoted, then convert using a current rate and your own payment provider’s charges. This page offers a comparison method, not a live price list, exchange service or personal financial recommendation. For legal entry costs and payment arrangements attached to a visa, use Visa & Entry.
Budget the Route Before Choosing a Daily Figure
A Cairo–Luxor trip, an all-inclusive coast stay and a multi-stop Nile cruise are different spending patterns. A daily average hides the difference between shared room or vehicle costs and costs charged separately to every traveller. Start with the actual itinerary, count nights and transfers, then add the activities you intend to buy. Include the arrival and departure days even when they hold little sightseeing.
For each quote, record dates, number of people, currency, inclusions, cancellation deadline and payment timing. Compare a flexible room with another flexible room, not with a cheaper non-refundable offer that transfers more risk to you. Keep a separate contingency for a changed connection or an extra night; it should not depend on recovering a deposit immediately.
On a small screen, swipe or scroll the table sideways to compare all columns.
| Cost category | What the Egypt quote must cover | How to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | All nights, guests, room category, taxes and meal plan. | Total stay cost in the quoted currency, with the same cancellation terms. |
| Domestic travel | Main service, luggage, station or airport transfers and last mile. | Complete door-to-door journey for the whole group. |
| Sites & museums | Chosen institutions, ticket category and optional restricted visits. | Actual visits you will make, rather than a package headline. |
| Cruise or tour | Cabin, meals, guiding, admissions and all stated exclusions. | Equivalent shore visits and accommodation before comparing with independent travel. |
| Meals & daily spending | Meals outside the plan, water arrangements, snacks and discretionary tips. | Days and people not already covered by a meal or excursion package. |
| Contingency | Disruption, a changed transfer or another necessary hotel night. | An accessible reserve separate from expected refunds. |
Use Cash and Cards as Complementary Options
Ask accommodation and major activity providers how they accept payment and in which currency the charge will be processed. Acceptance can differ between a hotel desk, a small guesthouse, a market stall and a booking made online. Do not depend on one phone or card for the entire trip. Keep a workable backup while avoiding the need to carry the whole holiday budget as cash.
EGP cash is useful for smaller purchases and situations where a card cannot be used. Carry manageable denominations and check the amount and change before leaving a counter. A large banknote can be inconvenient for a small transaction. Do not treat an unsolicited offer to exchange money as a substitute for a bank or authorised exchange service; use a legitimate provider and keep the transaction record where available.
At an ATM or card terminal, read the displayed currency, fees and conversion choice before accepting. Your issuer can explain its own foreign-transaction and withdrawal charges. A withdrawal limit or a declined transaction can be a bank or machine issue rather than proof that the destination is cash-only. Keep enough flexibility to use another suitable service without making an urgent large withdrawal.
Read the Currency on Every Quote
An Egyptian hotel, foreign booking platform and local tour company may present totals differently. Record the original quote and the currency you are expected to pay; a converted display is not necessarily the final card amount. If the deposit and balance use different currencies, ask how the balance is calculated. Keep written confirmation rather than relying on an informal description in a messaging conversation.
Refresh the budget when the exchange rate or a major quote changes. A stronger home currency does not guarantee that every hotel or excursion has become cheaper, because suppliers may also change prices. Compare the complete local quote and the actual amount charged by your payment provider. The Central Bank of Egypt is an official reference point; your transaction terms come from the institution handling the payment.
Separate Archaeological Admission from the Tour

At Giza, Luxor and other archaeological destinations, establish exactly what the purchased ticket or excursion includes. Site entry, an optional tomb or pyramid interior, a guide and transport can be distinct items. A tour title that names a place does not establish that every admission is included. Read the official ticket category and any optional additions for the particular date.
Museums also need to be budgeted individually. The Grand Egyptian Museum, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization are separate institutions; visiting one does not imply admission to the others. Choose the collections that suit your interests and available time before buying a bundle. Current collection access, photography rules and ticket arrangements should come from the institution, not an old travel article.
Concession rules can depend on age, student evidence, nationality or residency. Check eligibility before including a discount in the budget, and carry the documentation the provider requires. For context and museum comparisons, see History & Culture. Avoid paying for a theoretical saving on visits you do not intend to make.
Compare a Nile Cruise with the Same Independent Route
A useful cruise comparison starts with the same dates, nights and sightseeing scope. Add transport, accommodation, meals, guiding and site admission to the independent option. Then read the cruise exclusions: drinks, transfers, optional excursions and gratuity arrangements can alter the total. “Full board” describes a meal arrangement; it does not settle every other part of the purchase.
Check cabin category and location as carefully as the ship name. A cheaper cabin may have a different view or position, while a larger advertised suite may not be necessary for your priorities. Ask when the ship sails, how long it remains moored and what happens if the itinerary changes. Use Nile Cruises for the buying decisions, and compare the final written offer with the route you actually want.
Account for Transfers, Meals and Tips
In Cairo, a room’s location can change the number and length of transfers. On the coast, a low hotel price can be offset by an inconvenient airport or a distant activity departure. A vehicle quote should identify the pickup and drop-off addresses, waiting arrangements, luggage and any extra stops. For a group, a shared vehicle total and per-person excursion price should be compared using the same headcount.
Meal plans need the same attention. Compare room-only, breakfast, half-board and all-inclusive according to the meals you will actually use, the drinks included and the times they are available. A sightseeing day away from the resort may make part of a meal plan irrelevant. At restaurants, read the menu and bill for stated service charges and taxes; do not infer a final total from the first number shown.
Allow for discretionary tipping where you wish to tip, but distinguish it from a written charge. For a guided tour or cruise, ask whether any gratuity is expected to be collected and whether it is optional or contractual. A tip should not become an unexpected payment demanded only after the service. Clarify the price before accepting an extra service, photograph arrangement or ride.
Longer Stays: Compare the Whole Living Arrangement
A week or several weeks in one base needs a different comparison from a short hotel stop. Check the kitchen, laundry, cleaning schedule, drinking-water arrangements, air conditioning, workspace and the actual internet service. A room advertised with Wi-Fi does not establish that it is suitable for regular video calls. Ask for evidence relevant to the work you need to do and keep a connection backup if it matters.
Request the complete total for the intended stay, including utilities, cleaning, deposits and payment timing. Check who holds a deposit and the written conditions for its return. An apartment with a lower nightly figure may require transport for every meal or shopping trip, while a central room may reduce those repeated costs. Choose a base for ordinary daily needs as well as the sightseeing view.
Season matters: the conditions that suit a winter Nile visit may not suit a long summer stay in the same room. Confirm cooling, shade and the routine you can realistically maintain. A booking or rental agreement does not establish immigration permission, a right to work or a tax position. Verify the legal basis of a longer visit through the appropriate official authorities and obtain qualified advice for your circumstances when needed.
Before You Pay
Keep the supplier’s identity, booking reference, contact details and the agreed inclusions together. Read the cancellation and disruption conditions before making the payment, particularly when several separately booked services depend on one another. Use a payment method and provider whose terms you understand, and retain receipts. A polished website or a low headline price alone does not verify the service.
For the final check, add the trip again from the beginning: every night, every transfer, each paid visit and the meals not already included. Remove duplicate items and identify gaps. This is more useful than forcing the result into a universal “budget”, “mid-range” or “luxury” daily figure that may describe a different route and travel date.

Frequently asked questions
Should I budget only in US dollars for Egypt?
Record each item in the currency in which it is actually quoted and payable. Everyday EGP spending, an online hotel charge and a cruise balance may use different arrangements. Convert with a current rate and include your provider’s fees.
Is an all-inclusive holiday always cheaper?
Compare what you will use: meals, drinks, transfers and activities, including days spent away from the hotel. A headline meal-plan label does not establish that every item in your trip is included.
Are entrance tickets included in every guided excursion?
No. Read the exact inclusion list, ticket category and optional additions. Transport, guiding, general admission and particular interiors can be separate purchases.
Does a long accommodation booking let me live or work in Egypt?
Accommodation is only one part of the arrangement. Entry, length of stay, work permission and any tax questions depend on your circumstances and the applicable rules; verify them independently.
