Choose the Egyptian airport that fits the first and last nights of your trip. A low fare can lose its advantage if it requires a long transfer, an extra hotel night or a return across the country. Cairo International and Sphinx are different gateways; Hurghada and Marsa Alam serve different stretches of coast; a Luxor arrival can be useful for an Upper Egypt trip without a Cairo stop.

Start by plotting accommodation locations, then compare the flights available on the dates you need. Check the airport code, operating carrier, baggage, arrival time and complete transfer cost. This page covers arrival choices and airport-to-hotel planning. Use Getting Around Egypt for the longer travel between sightseeing bases.

Travel Tip: Write the airport code into every transfer confirmation. For a cruise or island hotel, confirm the final meeting point and whether the journey includes the last boat or dock transfer.

Which Egyptian gateway fits your route?

For a first trip focused on Cairo and Giza, examine both Cairo International and Sphinx while keeping their different locations in mind. For the Nile Valley, compare arrival and departure combinations involving Luxor and Aswan if suitable flights exist. For a beach holiday, select the actual coast and hotel rather than searching only for the cheapest flight labelled Egypt.

The airport codes below are useful when reading tickets and contacting a transfer company. They identify gateways rather than guaranteeing a direct flight from your home city. Airline networks and seasonal services change. Consult the operating airline's current timetable before fixing a route around a flight that appears in an older destination guide.

Arriving at Cairo International Airport

Arrange the transfer using your flight number, date and terminal, then send the full hotel address. Cairo is a large metropolitan area: a hotel near the airport, Downtown, on Zamalek or by Giza creates a different arrival journey. Do not accept one fixed travel-time promise without considering the location and traffic. Give your first evening room to absorb a delay.

The airport's official transport guidance describes taxi, bus, rental and limousine options. It lists city bus departures at the station in front of Terminal 1 and fixed-destination limousine services at the terminals. Check the current arrangements on arrival; an old route number or fare copied from another traveller may no longer apply. For an unfamiliar late arrival, an identifiable prearranged pickup can simplify the first journey.

Sphinx is a separate airport

Sphinx International, code SPX, lies on the western side of Greater Cairo and is distinct from Cairo International, code CAI. Air Cairo's Sphinx airport information identifies the gateway and its Giza location. Confirm the actual distance to your accommodation on a current map; being described as a Giza airport does not mean the terminal is beside the pyramids or your hotel.

Ask a transfer provider to repeat the airport code in the booking confirmation. A quote for Cairo Airport may mean CAI unless SPX is written explicitly. If flights require a change between the two airports, treat that as a separate road transfer with baggage and substantial time rather than a normal terminal connection. Recheck entry requirements, baggage handling and the consequences of a delay before buying an itinerary built from separate tickets.

Luxor and Aswan arrivals

For Luxor, tell the driver whether the hotel is on the East Bank or West Bank, or whether you are joining a cruise. A river view does not establish which side the entrance is on. If boarding a vessel, obtain the ship's name, the local contact and the confirmed meeting point close to departure. A generic cruise dock pin can be inadequate when berths or vessel arrangements change.

For Aswan, check the complete approach to accommodation on an island or riverside property. Ask whether the transfer includes the final boat, whether it runs at your arrival hour and where luggage is handled. Do not schedule a prepaid distant excursion immediately after landing. A delayed suitcase or a changed flight can otherwise force an unnecessary choice between missing the outing and leaving essential arrival tasks unfinished.

Hurghada, Marsa Alam and Sharm el-Sheikh

For a Red Sea stay, use the hotel's exact location to compare the airport and transfer. The marketing name of a resort area can cover a long section of coast. A shared coach may make several stops, while a private transfer should specify the total vehicle price and direct route. Ask the hotel which gateway its guests normally use and compare the actual flights available.

Hurghada, Marsa Alam and Sharm el-Sheikh are not interchangeable names for the same beach area. In South Sinai, an arrival for Sharm itself differs from a transfer onward to Dahab. In the southern Red Sea, a property sold under Marsa Alam may still need a substantial road journey. Verify whether late-night arrival is included in the transfer price, whether the reception will be staffed and whether a meal or drinking water will be available.

Private pickup, taxi or shared transfer?

A private pickup offers a clear destination and fewer stops, which can be useful after a long flight, with children or with mobility needs. Compare the full vehicle price for your group rather than the advertised starting rate. Ask about luggage capacity, waiting after a delayed flight, cancellation and the exact meeting point. A promised child seat should be confirmed with an appropriate size or type.

A shared transfer can be economical if the schedule and hotel drop-off list fit your arrival. Confirm whether the vehicle leaves at a fixed time or waits for other flights and how the operator handles a delay. For a taxi or ride-hailing option, use an identifiable booking or official arrangement and confirm the fare basis before departure. Match the driver and vehicle to the booking; unsolicited assistance in the arrivals hall should not replace that check.

Prepare the arrival sequence before landing

Keep travel documents, visa evidence where required and your hotel details accessible in hand baggage. Resolve the admission route in advance using Egypt Visa & Entry; a transfer booking does not establish visa eligibility. After immigration and baggage collection, check the name or reference on the pickup message and follow the agreed meeting instructions.

If the driver is absent, contact the booked company through the saved number before accepting a replacement. Have a backup contact for the hotel and enough battery to use it. A local SIM or travel eSIM can help, but activation and coverage should be tested rather than assumed. Ask whether a line includes voice calling, and keep the accommodation address available in an offline note that can be shown to someone helping you.

Connections, baggage and overnight buffers

Read the itinerary as a complete sequence: arrival terminal, immigration requirements, baggage collection, onward check-in and departure terminal. Through-ticketed and separately booked flights can carry very different protection if the first service is delayed. Ask the airline whether baggage is checked through and where you must collect it; do not decide this from the fact that both flights display the same brand.

On a trip ending with a domestic flight into Cairo and a separate international departure, consider an overnight buffer when a missed connection would be difficult or costly. Keep an essential overnight kit in your cabin bag. Confirm the flight again before leaving the last hotel and use local Africa/Cairo time, especially around seasonal clock changes. Recheck the return pickup, since the required departure terminal may differ from the one used on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

Are Cairo International and Sphinx the same airport?

No. Cairo International is CAI and Sphinx International is SPX. They are different gateways, so confirm the code on tickets, transfer quotes and any connection itinerary.

Which airport should I use for a Red Sea holiday?

Choose the gateway that fits your exact hotel and available flights. Hurghada, Marsa Alam and Sharm el-Sheikh serve different coastal areas; compare the complete transfer before buying.

What should I send a private transfer company?

Send the flight number, date, airport code, arrival terminal where confirmed, passenger and luggage numbers, full accommodation address and any child-seat or accessibility requirements.

Can I make a short self-transfer between Cairo and Sphinx?

Treat an airport change as a separate road journey with baggage and new check-in requirements. Allow substantial time and confirm airline conditions; an overnight plan may be more resilient.
