Egypt’s beaches serve different kinds of holidays. A sandy bay for children, a reef reached by a jetty, a walkable town and a remote diving base are different products even when all are described as Red Sea resorts. Choose the coastline and access conditions first, then the hotel. This guide compares mainland Red Sea bases, southern Sinai and the Mediterranean without assuming that every beach is open, swimmable or suitable in every season.

Travel Tip: Ask for a description of the sea entry and a map of the hotel grounds. These are often more useful than another photograph of the room’s sea view.

Choose the coast that fits the rest of the journey

The mainland Red Sea combines resort towns such as Hurghada with purpose-built bays and more spread-out southern hotels. It can work after a Nile itinerary, but the road transfer remains a travel day rather than a short hop across the map. South Sinai includes Sharm el Sheikh and Dahab on the other side of the Gulf of Suez. Reaching it from a mainland resort may require flying or a long overland journey; do not assume a convenient operating ferry.

The Mediterranean coast offers another setting, with a different seasonal rhythm and sea conditions. Alexandria suits visitors interested in a coastal city as well as the waterfront. A North Coast resort stay is more dependent on the specific property, season and access arrangements. The warmest sightseeing month in Upper Egypt need not be the month that best suits a Mediterranean swimming holiday.

Compare your arrival airport with the exact hotel, rather than using the regional resort name alone. A “Marsa Alam” property can be far from the town, while a “Hurghada” description may cover a wider coastal area. If you need independent restaurants, pharmacies or evening walks, inspect the surrounding settlement before booking. A beautiful isolated bay can be the wrong choice for someone who dislikes relying on hotel transport.

Hurghada, El Gouna and the resort bays

Hurghada is useful when you want a wide choice of accommodation and excursions, but the town name does not identify a particular beach experience. Ask whether the hotel has a natural sandy entry, a dredged or sheltered swimming area, a house reef or access by boat. Photos taken from above can conceal rocks, shallow water and the distance between rooms and the sea.

El Gouna’s lagoon landscape appeals to travellers who want a planned resort town. Check whether your room faces a lagoon or the open sea, and whether the advertised beach requires a shuttle or a walk. Families may value sheltered water, while a committed snorkeller may prefer another base. Neither preference makes the other setting inferior; it changes which details you need to verify.

Soma Bay and Sahl Hasheesh can suit travellers planning most of the stay around their hotel. Check meal arrangements, access to other restaurants, evening transport and whether water sports operate from the same beach. Wind that appeals to a kiteboarder can make a relaxed swim less comfortable. The official Hurghada guide is useful regional context, while current hotel and operator information determines what you can actually do.

Marsa Alam and the southern mainland coast

Choose the southern coast for the specific bay or activity rather than the broad promise of being away from crowds. Some properties sit near good shore access, while others depend on long jetties or boat excursions. Ask how often wind or sea conditions limit entry and what alternatives are available when a house reef is closed. A hotel pool is useful but does not replace the sea experience for which a keen snorkeller travelled.

A secluded setting makes planning more important. Confirm the arrival transfer, late check-in meal, pharmacy access and arrangements for medical help. For diving, ask the centre about the boat journey, maximum group size and site selection suitable for your experience. A famous offshore site is not automatically appropriate for a beginner or for everyone in a mixed-ability family.

Marine wildlife should remain a possibility, not a booking promise. Do not select an outing on a guaranteed turtle, dugong or dolphin encounter, and avoid operators that chase animals or encourage touching. The official Marsa Alam tourism page explains the regional setting. Your decision still rests on the precise bay, the licensed provider and the conditions on the day.

Sharm el Sheikh and Dahab

Sharm el Sheikh includes several bays with different shorelines, exposure and resort layouts. Ask about the route from the room to the water, steps, gradients and the length of any jetty. A sandy-looking hotel beach may end at a coral shelf where swimming is limited to a designated entry. This matters for young children, weak swimmers and anyone who cannot use a ladder comfortably.

Dahab offers a smaller-town base with restaurants and a recognisable waterfront, but much of its coastal appeal involves rocky or reef access. Choose accommodation according to the swimming area you will actually use. An excursion to a celebrated dive site requires a separate assessment of training, currents, depth and supervision. The name of a site never establishes that it is suitable for an introductory experience.

Check current travel advice for your route and nationality before combining Sinai with another region. Geography, border rules and restricted areas affect overland journeys. The visa guide explains why a limited Sinai permission must not be assumed to cover Cairo or the rest of Egypt.

Diving and snorkelling: select the provider and the conditions

Use the Chamber of Diving and Water Sports to research licensed providers and current guidance. Verify the centre that will actually operate the activity, rather than relying only on a reseller’s description. Ask how swimmers are supervised, what equipment is supplied, how guests are counted and what happens if someone wants to return early.

For a boat trip, ask about passenger limits, shaded seating, drinking water, toilets, life jackets and the method of entering and leaving the sea. Explain any mobility needs before paying. A ladder can be difficult even for a confident swimmer after time in the water. Choose an outing with a clear plan for non-swimmers instead of assuming everyone must join every stop.

Divers should discuss qualifications, recent experience and medical requirements with the centre, and follow its guidance on flying after diving. An introductory session is not permission for an independent deep dive. Do not copy a generic online interval over the advice appropriate to your actual dive profile. See Health & Safety for insurance and emergency preparation.

Check the beach before choosing the room

Ask the property to describe the present beach entry, swimming zones and any seasonal works. Check whether loungers, towels and water sports are included for your room and board plan. Confirm children’s access and supervision rules. A room marketed as sea view may overlook a distant coastline while requiring a long walk, shuttle or staircase to reach the actual beach.

Carry sun protection, drinking water and footwear appropriate to the shore, while avoiding standing on coral. Use designated entry points, keep your fins clear of the reef and never collect shells, coral or wildlife. Follow local flags and closures even when the sea looks calm from a lounger. Protected areas are managed environments, not unrestricted swimming grounds.

For a combined holiday, use Where to Stay to decide the base, Airports & Transfers for arrival logistics and Best Time to Visit for seasonal tradeoffs. Reserve a realistic final travel day instead of scheduling a remote boat outing immediately before a flight.

Frequently asked questions

Which Egypt beach is best for children?

Choose the actual hotel beach by sandy entry, depth, shade and supervision. A resort-town name alone cannot establish those conditions.

Can I combine Hurghada and Sharm by ferry?

Do not assume a convenient operating service. Confirm a real bookable route for your dates or compare flights and overland alternatives.

Does a house reef mean easy snorkelling?

No. Access can involve a jetty, ladder, deep water, currents or weather closures. Explain swimming ability to the provider before booking.

Is a sea-view room beside the beach?

Not necessarily. Ask about walking distance, steps, shuttles and the precise swimming entry before choosing a room category.
