Build transport around the route you want to experience, then compare the whole journey rather than the time on a flight or train ticket. Cairo and Giza, Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea belong to different travel corridors. Combining them is straightforward to plan when you give each move a realistic place in the itinerary; it becomes tiring when every overnight stay requires another transfer.

Use this guide for travel between bases and everyday movement once you arrive. The separate Airports & Transfers guide explains gateways and the first trip to your accommodation. For overnight river journeys, use Nile Cruises to compare vessels, routes and inclusions instead of treating a cruise as an ordinary point-to-point ferry.

Travel Tip: Before departure, ask the provider to confirm the exact station or airport in writing and send that location to your driver. A city name alone is not a precise pickup instruction.

Choose transport for the journey, not just the fare

Start by listing your non-negotiable stops and the nights available. A traveller with one week needs a different transport plan from someone with three weeks and no fixed hotel sequence. Avoid doubling back through Cairo simply because you began there if a suitable onward route is available. Equally, a theoretical direct connection is not useful until a real service exists on your date.

Calculate the cost for the whole party, including luggage, station or airport transfers, waiting and the effect on the day. A private vehicle can work well for several travellers visiting sites along a road corridor, while a flight may preserve more usable time on a longer journey. Choose a slower mode deliberately for the experience, rather than discovering after booking that an overnight train does not provide the sleep you expected.

Domestic flights: compare the door-to-door day

Flights can help a short trip connect Cairo with Upper Egypt or a coastal gateway, but plan around the service available on your dates. Use the airline's current booking system and check both airport names. A search result that says Cairo may refer to Cairo International or Sphinx; those are different airports on opposite sides of the metropolitan area. Check the itinerary before paying for the hotel transfer.

Read the baggage allowance on the actual fare. The published EGYPTAIR baggage guidance distinguishes domestic and international travel, but your ticket, operating airline and special equipment still matter. Keep medicine, essential documents and valuables in hand baggage. On separate tickets, allow a substantial buffer or an overnight stay before an international departure; a domestic delay can otherwise become an expensive missed flight.

Day trains and foreign-passenger tickets

Rail is relevant to Cairo, Alexandria and the Nile Valley, including Luxor and Aswan. Select a train type and reserved class that match your comfort needs, luggage and journey length. A route name alone does not tell you whether the service offers air-conditioning, a reclining seat or a sleeping berth. Keep the booking details in a form you can show at the station without mobile data.

The Egyptian National Railways booking portal has displayed a restriction on online booking for non-Egyptians while that facility is under development. Do not assume that a domestic fare or a local identity-number form is valid for a foreign visitor. Confirm the current official booking channel and applicable fare, or use a clearly identified authorized seller that explains its fee and ticket delivery. Never enter an invented identity number to complete a reservation.

Sleeper trains: berth, station and realistic expectations

For an overnight sleeper, consult Abela Trains and compare the cabin arrangement rather than relying on an old fare quoted for a different nationality or year. Confirm whether the price buys a bed or the whole cabin, who shares it, which meals are included and what the cancellation conditions are. A family or group should establish whether cabins can be assigned together before paying.

Check the exact departure station shown on the ticket. Do not send a driver to Ramses automatically because an old itinerary says Cairo: station arrangements can differ by service, and Upper Egypt Station at Bashteel is a separate location. Have the provider confirm the name, location and recommended arrival time. The sleeper is part of the travel experience, not a guarantee of hotel-quality rest. Keep the first morning after arrival flexible and arrange luggage storage if your room is not ready.

Coaches and longer road transfers

Coaches can fill gaps between rail corridors and coastal destinations, but compare actual boarding points and arrival times. A city name on a booking page can cover several offices or roadside stops. Ask where to wait, how early to arrive and how luggage is handled. Save the exact location and company contact before leaving Wi-Fi.

For a private road transfer, request a written total for the vehicle, passengers, luggage, stops and waiting. Establish whether a site visit is included or simply a transport stop. Check that the vehicle has working seatbelts, and request an appropriate child seat where needed. Prefer sensible daytime planning for unfamiliar long routes and avoid using a rushed overnight transfer to repair an overfilled itinerary. Remote roads need a current access and permit check rather than a driver's verbal assurance alone.

Getting around Cairo and Giza

Group nearby sights into the same day. A museum or monument may look close on a national map while requiring a substantial city journey from the hotel. Choose the base and pickup point with the day's geography in mind. For a ride-hailing booking, check the registration and driver before entering and use a clear meeting point that does not require crossing busy traffic with luggage.

The metro can be useful where its current route fits your destination, but it does not remove the walk or onward ride at either end. Check the live route map and station access before relying on it, particularly with large luggage or mobility needs. For taxis, agree how the fare will be calculated before the journey begins. Keep the hotel name and destination written clearly; an attraction's English nickname may be less useful than its official map location.

Luxor and Aswan: rivers change the route

In Luxor, plan the East Bank and West Bank as distinct sightseeing areas. The river crossing, road approach and distances between monuments all affect the day. A ferry ride can connect the banks, but reaching the landing does not mean you have reached a tomb or temple farther inland. Confirm the complete route with the driver or guide and avoid placing an inflexible lunch booking between several uncertain transfers.

In Aswan, some visits involve a boat as well as a road transfer. Ask whether the quoted price includes the boat, waiting and the return journey. A felucca outing is different from a direct transfer: wind, route and the nature of the trip affect what is realistic. Agree the duration, pickup and return point, and ask about lifejackets before departure. Keep the day of an onward flight separate from any excursion whose return is uncertain.

Moving around the Red Sea coast

Coastal resorts can be widely separated, and a hotel marketed under the name of a well-known resort may sit a long way from its centre. Check the actual property pin before comparing transfers. This matters when choosing between an isolated resort with most facilities on site and a town base where you intend to eat out or join different operators.

Do not assume that a convenient ferry links every coastal destination on your dates. Treat any proposed sea crossing as unconfirmed until the operator's current timetable and passenger booking conditions are available. For diving or snorkelling days, ask whether pickup is included from your exact hotel and how long the shared transfer may take. Leave room for weather changes and avoid putting a time-sensitive flight immediately after a boat excursion.

Before confirming any transport

Read the passenger names, date, local departure time, route, station or airport, luggage and cancellation terms together. Egypt observes seasonal clock changes, so use the Africa/Cairo time zone and reconfirm schedules around a change of season. A screenshot without a booking reference is not a substitute for an issued ticket or the provider's confirmation.

Keep the next accommodation informed of a late arrival and arrange a contact method that works if the original transport changes. If a transfer is subcontracted, record who is responsible for resolving a problem. Give yourself a recovery option: money for a replacement ride, a flexible first activity and enough battery to reach assistance. Those details usually matter more than saving a small amount on the initial fare.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreign visitors book trains through the ENR website?

The ENR portal has displayed a restriction while non-Egyptian online booking is under development. Check its current instructions and the correct foreign-passenger fare, or use a clearly identified authorized seller.

Which Cairo station does the sleeper use?

Check the exact station printed on your issued ticket and confirm it with Abela or the seller. Do not assume Ramses; Upper Egypt Station at Bashteel is a different location.

Should I fly or take the sleeper to Upper Egypt?

Compare the complete day, cost, cabin arrangement and your tolerance for an interrupted night. Flying can preserve time on a short itinerary; a sleeper suits travellers choosing the overnight journey as part of the experience.

Is a cruise the same as a ferry between Luxor and Aswan?

No. A Nile cruise is a multi-day accommodation and sightseeing product. Compare the vessel, nights, excursions, docking and inclusions separately from ordinary transport tickets.
