Vienna Airports & Transfers: Current Train and Bus Options

Vienna International Airport (VIE) is the main airport for a Vienna city stay. Choose the connection for your hotel and travel date, rather than the most familiar train name. The airport is outside the Vienna core fare zone. A city ticket alone does not automatically cover the whole journey.

Current Airport Rail Changes: 2026–27

Checked 20 October 2026: major works on the central S-Bahn corridor run from 7 September 2026 through the end of October 2027. The normal CAT train to Wien Mitte is replaced by a bus; S7 trains use a shortened route to St. Marx. Long-distance trains to Hauptbahnhof provide a different airport route. Consult the Vienna Tourist Board’s current works notice and your departure-day planner.

Do not follow an old instruction to remain on the S7 until Wien Mitte. The changed interchange matters especially with heavy bags, children or limited mobility. A hotel described as “next to the CAT station” can still be conveniently placed, but the current mode and boarding point need checking.

Current connection types during the works; approximate line times come from official operator/tourism information and exclude waiting and onward travel.

Rail via Hauptbahnhof

For a straightforward train arrival, compare services to Wien Hauptbahnhof in ÖBB’s journey planner. Enter your full destination, not just “Vienna”. From the main station, U1 and other local services continue into the city. The station complex is large, so allow time to find the correct exit and onward platform.

Check whether your ticket includes the onward city leg or whether you need a separate city ticket. If you already hold valid core-zone travel, select the appropriate airport journey product rather than paying twice for the same portion. Ask an official ticket office if the machine’s fare combination is unclear. A cheap rail ticket with a difficult last connection may be less convenient than an option stopping close to your hotel.

CAT by Bus and Airport Buses

The CAT operator currently advertises a premium replacement bus between the airport and Wien Mitte through 31 October 2027. Use its current departure information for the exact airport stop and city boarding point. Treat journey times as a service estimate, not a traffic guarantee. The usual city check-in service at Wien Mitte is unavailable during the replacement operation according to the tourist-board notice.

Vienna Airport Bus serves several city corridors. Compare the stop with your accommodation before choosing: a bus serving the northeast is not the same journey as one serving Schwedenplatz, Hauptbahnhof or Westbahnhof. Check the actual route on your date, including any extra services introduced during the rail works. Airport buses are separate from ordinary Vienna core-zone transport.

Late Arrival, Early Departure and Assistance

Look up the last usable connection after your likely baggage-claim time, then keep a fallback. An arrival at 23:30 does not mean you will be at the bus or railway platform at 23:30. For an early flight, check the first departure from your actual city stop and the airline’s airport arrival requirement.

If you need assistance, arrange it with the airline or transport operator before travel and confirm the meeting point. For a taxi or private transfer, state whether you need a ramp, transfer assistance or space for a non-folding wheelchair. “Large car” is not an accessibility specification. The accessibility section lists useful planning resources.

Travel Tip: Save a screenshot or offline copy of your full airport journey on the day you travel. The final hotel connection and correct bus stop matter as much as the airport-to-city leg.

If Your Ticket Says Bratislava

Bratislava Airport is in Slovakia and is a separate airport, not another terminal at VIE. Price the cross-border transfer and its timetable before choosing it for a Vienna stay. Keep the airport code visible in all transport bookings. Do not use a Vienna Airport transfer ticket for a different airport.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CAT currently a 16-minute train?

During the current works it operates as CAT by bus. Check the operator’s present timetable and stop information, rather than an older train description.

Can I take the S7 directly to Wien Mitte?

The current works notice describes a shortened S7 service to St. Marx. Check the complete onward connection for your travel date.

Does a Vienna city ticket include the airport?

The airport is outside the Vienna core zone. Confirm the additional fare or a product that explicitly includes airport transfer.
