Spend three nights each in Prague, Vienna and Budapest. Take a direct daytime train on Day 4 and again on Day 7, then leave from Budapest on Day 10. This gives you two full sightseeing days in each city, plus whatever time you have on arrival and transfer days. If you are flying, compare a multi-city ticket into Prague and out of Budapest with the total cost of returning to your starting airport.
Start with the two train days and choose hotels that make those transfers easy. Give the bigger visits their own time, especially Prague Castle, Schönbrunn Palace and the Hungarian Parliament. You can walk or use public transport within each city.

How to book the two train journeys
Day 4 from Praha hl.n. to Wien Hbf
Search for Praha hlavní nádraží, usually shown as Praha hl.n., to Wien Hauptbahnhof, shown as Wien Hbf. České dráhy (ČD) lists direct Railjet and ComfortJet trains on the main route. Allow around four hours on a direct Railjet, then add the time from each station to your hotel. Confirm the departure station and journey time for the train you book. ČD service information · Journey time · Journey planner
Day 7 from Wien Hbf to Budapest
Start with Wien Hbf to Budapest-Keleti. Allow about 2½–3 hours on a direct train, depending on the service and where you get off. Keleti and Kelenföld are separate stations. Kelenföld is on the Buda side and has metro line M4. Keleti is in Pest and has lines M2 and M4. Check which stops your train serves and choose the one with the simpler hotel connection. ÖBB route information · ÖBB timetable
Engineering works can change where trains stop, including whether they call at Keleti. Recheck the operator’s timetable close to departure and look for service alerts or a replacement bus. ÖBB lists 13 December 2026 as the start of the 2027 timetable. For trips around that date, search both journeys for the actual travel dates. MÁV engineering works · ÖBB timetable change
Travel tickets, seat reservations and rail passes
- Check the fare and the seat separately. The ticket covers travel. A reservation allocates a particular seat on a particular service. Look for a coach and seat number in the booking confirmation. Some fares include a reservation and some services or classes require one. ČD reservation rules
- Reserve together if you need adjacent seats. Check the chosen train’s rules and seat map, especially for a group or if you want a table. If you already hold a ticket, check whether you can add a seat reservation separately. ÖBB booking FAQ
- Compare the total for two point-to-point tickets first. If you already have a rail pass, check whether each exact service is covered, whether you need to use a travel day and what any seat reservation costs. Compare the complete price and change conditions before buying.
Prague for three nights

Day 1. Arrive and find your bearings
Drop your bags and pick one neighbourhood walk. If you arrive with daylight, try Old Town Square and the Old Town end of the Vltava waterfront. If you arrive late, eat near the hotel and leave the bridge for Day 2.
Day 2. Old Town, the river and Charles Bridge
Start in Old Town Square, then take the lanes towards Charles Bridge. Walk across to Malá Strana and pause by the river. For an indoor visit, choose one museum or the Jewish Museum sites you most want to see and confirm their opening day. Leave time for lunch and the river walk. Charles Bridge visitor information
Day 3. Prague Castle and Malá Strana
Choose the Prague Castle visitor circuit that matches your interests. The castle grounds and historic buildings have different access hours. St. Vitus Cathedral opens later to sightseers on Sundays. Take transit up if you prefer to save the uphill walk, then spend the afternoon in Malá Strana. Check the last stretch back to your hotel if cobbles or steps affect your route. Prague Castle tickets · Opening hours
Where to stay in Prague. Old Town suits travellers who want the historic centre outside the door. A New Town address with a straightforward route to Praha hl.n. can make Day 4 easier. Use the Prague accommodation guide to compare your actual hotel-to-station route as well as evening noise and access.
Vienna for three nights

Day 4. Take the train and keep the evening simple
After arriving at Wien Hbf, go to the hotel or drop your bags if it is too early to check in. If there is time, start around Karlsplatz or the State Opera, then walk towards the historic centre for dinner. Leave a museum ticket for a full day.
Day 5. Hofburg and the Ringstrasse
Start at the Hofburg courtyards and Heldenplatz, then follow the Ringstrasse towards Parliament and City Hall. Choose one major indoor visit, such as the Kunsthistorisches Museum or a Hofburg exhibition, and leave time for a coffeehouse break. Vienna’s Ringstrasse guide
Day 6. Schönbrunn and a flexible afternoon
Give Schönbrunn Palace a morning or early afternoon. The palace uses fixed admission times. Pick a ticket for the rooms you want, confirm which garden attractions are included and check the separate hours for the palace and grounds. Leave the other half of the day for a market, a museum you missed or a slower meal. Schönbrunn tickets · Opening hours
Where to stay in Vienna. Compare a central address around Karlsplatz or the inner districts with a station-area hotel near Wien Hbf. The first can shorten sightseeing trips and the second can simplify both train transfers. Check the walk from the transit stop to the hotel with luggage. See our Vienna area guide.
Budapest for three nights

Day 7. Arrive and take a first Pest-side walk
Use the arrival station shown for your service. Once you have dropped your bags, choose one short Pest route, such as Deák Ferenc tér to the Danube promenade. If daylight is short, find dinner and save the river for the next two days.
Day 8. Buda Castle District and the Danube
Start on Castle Hill at Fisherman’s Bastion and the square beside Matthias Church. Check visitor times if you want to go inside. Walk towards the palace terraces when access allows, or take public transport back down and choose a riverside viewpoint. Check the gradients and surfaces before deciding to walk up. Save time for the Parliament view across the river. Matthias Church tickets
Day 9. Parliament and one Pest afternoon
Build the morning around your Parliament visitor slot if you want to see the interior. Check the language, meeting point and arrival instructions. If tickets are unavailable, walk around Kossuth Lajos tér and along the river. Parliament tickets
For the afternoon, choose between a walk through central Pest around St Stephen’s Basilica and a trip to City Park. If you plan to visit Széchenyi Thermal Bath, allow time for the trip and changing. The minimum age for a standard visit is 14. Families can spend the afternoon in City Park itself. Széchenyi visitor rules
Day 10. Leave from Budapest
Make breakfast the only fixed plan unless your departure is late. For a flight, BKK’s 100E Airport Express connects central Pest and the airport and uses a special fare. Check the right boarding stop and allow time for the ride, possible traffic and airport procedures. If continuing by rail, confirm the station printed on the onward ticket. BKK Airport Express details
Where to stay in Budapest. Central Pest around Deák Ferenc tér or Kálvin tér works well for this itinerary if you want a convenient base for both the Pest visits and the airport bus. Buda makes sense when the hill or the quieter riverbank is your priority. Compare the actual routes from your chosen hotel in the Budapest accommodation guide.
What to book first and how to budget
- Confirm the first and last city. Compare flight or onward rail costs for the full route before paying for a non-refundable room.
- Compare the two trains with nine hotel nights. Check service times before choosing the cheapest fare. For stays, price the same room conditions, cancellation terms and any local taxes.
- Reserve the visits that shape the day. Book a Schönbrunn palace slot and the Parliament visit if they are priorities. Leave the remaining walks and transfer-day plans flexible.
Budget for both train fares, any reservations, nine nights, local transport, airport transfers and the admissions you will use. Check totals in Czech koruna, euros and Hungarian forints when those are the currencies shown. A central hotel can save local journeys, so compare the whole trip price alongside the room rate.
Prague, Vienna and Budapest by train FAQ
Is 10 days enough for all three cities?
Yes for a first visit with this pace. You have two full days in each city, two rail transfer days and separate arrival and departure days. Add a night to the city you are most interested in if you want several museums or a day trip.
Can you do the route in reverse?
Yes. Start in Budapest and finish in Prague if the full trip works better in that direction. Check the reverse services for your dates, then rebuild the booking days around your actual arrival and departure times.
Should I book seat reservations as well as tickets?
Check the rules for the exact train and fare. When reservations are optional, they are still useful if you want to sit together, are travelling at a busy time or need a particular seat. Confirm whether the booking already includes a seat before buying a separate reservation.
Should I add Bratislava or another day trip?
With nine nights, keep both full days in each base if this is your first visit. Add a night for a side trip, or deliberately trade one city day for it. Choose the day trip separately from your two train transfers.
