Getting Around Prague: Tickets, Trams & Metro

Prague works well as a walking-and-transit city. Use the metro for longer crossings, trams for useful surface links and buses for areas beyond the rail network. Walking is rewarding within the historic core, but slopes and uneven paving make repeated cross-city walks tiring. Plan the whole route, including the final exit and street, rather than choosing only the shortest vehicle time.

Which transport mode fits the journey?
ChoiceWhat it means for your trip
MetroUseful for longer city trips and airport connections after the bus/trolleybus. Check the line, direction and the exit you actually need.
TramsUseful for surface travel and reducing castle-side climbs. Check the destination and live diversions; not every vehicle or stop has the same accessibility.
Buses / trolleybusesImportant for airport and neighbourhood connections. Read the route at the actual travel time.
WalkingBest for short connected sightseeing areas. Allow extra time for cobblestones, hills and crowded lanes.
Night servicesNight trams and buses use their own routes and timetable. Confirm an evening return independently of the daytime plan.

Current Short-Term Fares

For the ordinary full adult fare, the PID Lítačka app lists 36 CZK for 30 minutes, 46 CZK for 90 minutes, 140 CZK for 24 hours and 340 CZK for 72 hours. Paper equivalents are 39, 50, 150 and 350 CZK respectively, checked on 18 October 2026. Age entitlements, regional travel and special services require separate checks. The current PID fare information takes precedence over an old screenshot or printed guide.

Validation and App Activation

A valid journey requires the right ticket to be active before the operator requires it. Validate a paper ticket at first use as instructed, including before entering a metro paid area; do not revalidate the same time ticket on every transfer. Follow the app’s activation countdown and displayed validity before boarding or entering the paid zone. An unused purchased ticket, a loading screen or a payment receipt is not a substitute for a valid ticket. Read PID’s purchase guidance for the medium you choose.

Transfers, Zones and Airport Exceptions

Ordinary time tickets allow transfers within their validity and applicable scope. The Prague fare is not a blanket ticket for every train or regional destination. Use a current planner for a trip beyond the city and buy the required regional coverage. Airport Express has a separate fare: do not board it with only a normal Prague time ticket. Trolleybus 59 and bus 100 are different from AE and connect to metro lines A and B respectively.

Petřín and Special Services

Check the live operating status and tariff of the Petřín funicular before treating it as part of a route. Its reconstruction and reopening arrangements make old advice especially unreliable. PID distinguishes short time tickets from longer products and special funicular fares. A printed inclusion list does not establish that the service is operating on your travel date. Use the current operator notices and keep a walking or tram alternative that fits your mobility.

A Practical Castle-Side Journey

If the aim is to avoid a long climb, compare an approach to the higher castle-side streets followed by a downhill walk. Check the current tram route and the entrance that is actually open. This helps many walkers but is not automatically a step-free route; castle and street surfaces still need attention. Avoid adding a long riverside loop simply because the map looks compact.

Accessible Travel and Prams

Use the city’s accessible transport guidance and DPP’s metro accessibility information to identify suitable entrances and current lift arrangements. Low-floor trams can still meet a stop with an awkward platform edge. Leave more connection time if a specific lift, vehicle or assistance arrangement is essential. Tell accommodation providers which route you expect to use so they can clarify the last section.

Taxis, Bikes and a Car

For an arranged car, confirm the full fare basis and pickup point through the operator. A short centre journey can be slower than transit during congestion. Cycling suits some river routes but not every crowded or cobbled central street; use marked routes and give pedestrians space. For a city break, compare parking charges and restrictions before bringing a rental car into the historic centre.

Travel Tip:When using an app ticket, check that its validity has actually started before entering the metro paid area. Keep the phone charged and the ticket easy to display throughout the journey.
