Prague Airport & Transfers: Reaching Your Base

Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG) is the city’s main international airport. You may still see the older Ruzyně name. Choose your transfer by the final hotel stop and the amount of luggage you can comfortably move. The standard public transport route involves a bus or trolleybus followed by the metro; the airport is not a central metro station.
| Choice | What it means for your trip |
|---|---|
| Trolleybus 59 + metro A | Terminals 1/2 to Nádraží Veleslavín, then metro A. A useful starting choice for many east-bank central addresses and Vinohrady; check the final exit. |
| Bus 100 + metro B | Terminals 1/2 to Zličín, then metro B. Compare this route for addresses near line B, including some New Town or Karlín bases. |
| Airport Express (AE) | Connection to Praha hlavní nádraží. Uses a separate fare; ordinary Prague time tickets are not accepted on AE. |
| Night buses 907 / 910 | Check the current stop list and onward night connection for the arrival time. The route can be less direct than daytime metro travel. |
| Arranged car / official airport taxi service | Useful for luggage or a difficult final route. Confirm the vehicle, pickup point, full quoted price and any child-seat/access requirements. |
The airport’s public transport page and Airport Express information provide current details. Read service changes close to departure, especially around works or late arrivals.
Terminals and Border Procedures
Check the terminal on your booking and flight information. Terminal use reflects the actual route and operating arrangements, not simply the airline name. A short Schengen connection and an arrival requiring external-border formalities need different buffers. Keep documents and onward accommodation details accessible. If your first entry into the Schengen area occurs before Prague, border processing may occur at that earlier airport.

Buying and Activating the Right Ticket
For ordinary airport bus/trolleybus plus metro travel, buy sufficient time for the whole trip and its transfers. The current Prague fare depends on whether you buy in PID Lítačka or on paper. Follow the app’s activation instructions and displayed validity; paper tickets usually need first-use validation. A ticket that has merely been purchased is not necessarily already valid. See Getting Around before entering the paid area.
Planning Time Without a False Guarantee
Allow roughly an hour as a starting planning block from leaving the terminal to many central bases by public transport, then adjust for the exact hotel, waiting, luggage and any lift-dependent route. This is an editorial allowance, not a service duration. Immigration, baggage delivery and disruptions add separate time. For departure, work backwards from the airline’s check-in and security requirements and include a margin before the planned vehicle.

Late Arrivals, Families and Access Needs
Check a real journey at your expected airport-exit time, not at the flight’s scheduled landing time. If the itinerary relies on the last metro, look up a night alternative before flying. For families, compare the total fares and transfer effort against an arranged vehicle with the correct child seat. For reduced mobility, confirm the step-free route through each station and the hotel entrance; low-floor airport transport alone does not make the entire journey accessible.
Arriving by Train Instead
Read the station name on your actual train ticket. Praha hlavní nádraží, Praha-Holešovice and Praha-Smíchov are not interchangeable arrival points. Save the station-to-hotel route and check any station works before travel. If travelling onward immediately, allow for the platform change and luggage rather than booking the tightest possible connection. City transport and mainline rail tickets also have different scope.
