Prague is the capital of Czechia, also officially called the Czech Republic. You will see the Czech name Praha on station signs, maps and tickets. Knowing a few of these local names makes arrival and navigation easier: Praha hlavní nádraží is the main railway station, Staré Město is Old Town and Malá Strana is Lesser Town.

Names That Help You Find the Right Place

A single Prague place can appear in Czech and in translation. Václavské náměstí means Wenceslas Square, Staroměstské náměstí is Old Town Square, and Pražský hrad is Prague Castle. Copy the exact stop name from a current journey planner, especially for an airport transfer or evening return. District numbers alone are not enough to describe a location: Prague 1 includes areas on both sides of the river.

Three Decisions Before Booking

First choose your base by the repeated journeys you will make; Where to Stay compares central and residential districts. Then decide how many paid interiors you actually want, because that changes both budget and pace. Finally check arrival and departure times against the final public transport connection, not just the flight duration.

Use Getting Around for ticket activation and transfers. A ticket’s zone and time validity matter together. The old habit of quoting a single Prague fare without stating the ticket medium is no longer sufficient: current app and paper prices differ.

Cash, Cards and Daily Spending

Carry a card and a modest amount of usable koruna for small purchases. Compare bank and ATM charges rather than keeping an old exchange-rate table. The money guide explains payment currency, valid notes and budget assumptions. A quoted euro price in a tourist business does not mean it is the cheapest way to pay.

Rooms, museum admissions and meals vary by date and choice. Do not convert a sample daily budget into a promised price for your stay. Check whether breakfast, local accommodation charges, cancellation terms and transport are included before comparing offers.

Entry and Daily Preparation

Check the official entry requirements for your nationality before arranging a trip. Schengen short-stay limits apply across the relevant countries together, not as a fresh allowance every time you reach Prague. Entry/Exit System and ETIAS information should be checked on the official EU sites close to travel.

Bring footwear suited to uneven surfaces, rain protection and access to your arrival details without mobile data. For a winter trip, plan around short daylight and potentially slippery surfaces; for summer, leave room for heat or a sudden shower. Best Time to Visit describes these trade-offs without treating climate averages as a forecast.

Travel Tip:Save both the Czech street address and the nearest useful transit stop for your accommodation. A translated place name can be less useful than the exact Czech spelling when checking a platform sign or asking for directions.
