Choose the market that fits your trip. Start with Vienna for a classic Advent setting, Prague for a historic square after New Year, Budapest for a basilica light display, London for riverside food and gifts, or Paris for a festive outing alongside museums and neighbourhood time.
The 2026–27 dates below were checked against organisers and official tourism sources on 3 November 2026. The selection and suggested trip length are editorial judgments.
Photographs show previous seasons; event dates and opening details refer to the verified 2026–27 season.
European Christmas markets: confirmed 2026 dates
Each row covers one named event, with its official date source. Other markets in the same city can follow a different schedule.

| City and named event | Published season dates | Why consider it? |
|---|---|---|
| Vienna: Rathausplatz Christmas Market | 13 November–26 December 2026 | A classic city-hall setting and a market-focused Advent break. |
| Prague: Old Town Square Christmas Market | 28 November 2026–6 January 2027 | A historic-square setting, including dates after New Year. |
| Budapest: Advent Basilica | 13 November 2026–1 January 2027 | Food, crafts and an evening visit around the basilica square. |
| London: Southbank Centre Winter Market | 2 November 2026–3 January 2027 | A food-and-gifts stop within a riverside city walk. |
| Paris: La Magie de Noël aux Tuileries | 14 November 2026–3 January 2027 | A seasonal outing within a broader Paris break. |
Vienna: choose Rathausplatz for a classic Advent setting
Make Vienna your first choice when the market is the main reason for the trip. The City Hall backdrop gives Rathausplatz a clear focal point for a classic Advent break.
The organiser confirms 13 November to 26 December 2026, with daily market hours of 10:00–22:00 and a shorter 10:00–18:30 day on 24 December. The adjacent Ice Dream continues until 6 January 2027, but that longer skating season does not extend the market's closing date.
For a first stay, allow one full market evening and leave the following day for a museum, café or neighbourhood walk. That gives the market room in your plans without filling every evening with another set of stalls.
Use our Vienna guide to plan the rest of the stay. If your dates fall after 26 December, choose a different named event: Rathausplatz will have finished.
Prague: Old Town Square for a later-season break

Prague is especially useful on this shortlist if your available days fall after New Year. Prague City Tourism lists the Old Town Square Christmas Market from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. That gives it a different planning window from markets that finish before Christmas.
The official event description highlights Czech craft goods, food and a cultural programme. Give the stalls a browsing visit rather than using the square only as a photo stop.
Photographers can return to the same square by day and after dark. Keeping one hotel base makes that plan simple, with nearby walks between visits instead of another cross-city journey.
The Prague guide supplies the broader sightseeing context. A season ending on 6 January can still have different hours on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
Budapest: Advent Basilica for an evening around the square

Budapest suits a food-and-crafts evening with a scheduled light display. Advent Basilica takes place on Szent István Square; use that named location when choosing your base.
The organiser confirms 13 November 2026 to 1 January 2027. Christmas Eve closes early at 15:00, while the published 25–26 December hours are 11:00–20:00. Its programme page describes crafts, food and a basilica façade light projection from 17:30.
On days with an evening programme, build the visit around the display, then browse the stalls or choose something to eat. On 24 December, plan a daytime visit before the 15:00 closing. Leave the rest of the day for other parts of Budapest, rather than trying to make every stop a market visit.
Our Budapest guide covers the wider city. These dates belong to Advent Basilica, rather than Vörösmarty Square or every seasonal event in Budapest.
London: Southbank Winter Market as part of a riverside day

Choose Southbank for a casual food-and-gifts stop within a riverside day. It works particularly well when a Christmas market is one part of a London trip, rather than its main event.
The Southbank Centre confirms 2 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 on Queen's Walk, under Hungerford Bridge. It publishes stall hours of 11:00–22:00 and bar hours of 11:00–23:00, alongside food traders, crafts and gifts.
Use our London guide to plan the wider route and keep an indoor option for bad weather. The public walkway and individual traders can have different opening hours.
For rides and shows, compare Hyde Park Winter Wonderland: 19 November 2026–3 January 2027, closed on Christmas Day. Every visitor needs an entry ticket for a chosen arrival slot. Rides and shows have their own ticket arrangements.
Paris: Tuileries within a wider city break

Paris suits travellers who want museums, food and neighbourhood time as much as a Christmas outing. Give the Tuileries a place in that wider stay, with time to enjoy its stalls and festive setting.
The official Paris tourism board lists La Magie de Noël aux Tuileries from 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, in the Tuileries Garden by Place de la Concorde.
Combine one museum visit, lunch and an unhurried market stop. Leave another day for a different neighbourhood, rather than crossing the city repeatedly before returning for the lights.
Our Paris guide helps you organise the broader stay.
Choose your dates before adding more cities
For early November, London opens first among these events. Prague's Old Town Square does not start until 28 November. In early January, Prague, Southbank and Tuileries offer later dates than Vienna's Rathausplatz market.
Two or three nights in one city is our editorial starting point for a first market break. It gives you time with the stalls and other sights. Add a second base only when you have a clear reason for another hotel change.
Prefer handmade-gift shopping? Madrid's Recoletos artisan fair runs from 1 to 30 December 2026, closing on 25 December. This optional craft-shopping alternative is between Colón and Cibeles; its dates do not apply to Plaza Mayor's Christmas market.
What to check before you book
- Event identity: confirm the actual square, garden or riverside location.
- Your visit day: check holiday hours, closures and any programme you particularly want.
- Entry and extras: separate market access from paid rides, skating, shows or reservations.
- The whole budget: include accommodation, transport, meals, gifts and any attraction tickets, rather than relying on a generic cost-per-day claim.
- A usable base: choose accommodation for the whole stay, with a return route that works after your planned evening.
- Weather and comfort: check the forecast, allow indoor breaks and choose footwear for the walking you expect to do.

European Christmas markets: frequently asked questions
Do European Christmas markets stay open after Christmas?
Some do. On this shortlist, Prague's Old Town Square runs through 6 January 2027, while Southbank and Tuileries run through 3 January. Other named events finish earlier. Check the exact event and the hours for your visit day.
Can I visit a market on Christmas Day?
Advent Basilica lists 11:00–20:00 on 25 December, while Hyde Park Winter Wonderland closes that day. Check your chosen event’s holiday timetable and plan meals and transport separately.
Which city should I choose for a first Christmas-market break?
We would start with Vienna for a classic market-focused stay, Prague for a historic-square setting with later-season dates, or London if the market is one stop in a broader itinerary. Your available dates and interests should decide.
Are market dates the same across a city?
No. A city can host several separately organised markets, craft fairs and attractions. Match the event name and location to its own official schedule; a city's general Christmas season is not a timetable for every stall.
