Quick answer: Choose Seychelles if you want beaches alongside forest walks, different coastal settings and an independent island-hopping route. Choose the Maldives if your priority is settling into an island stay built around the lagoon, reef and accommodation. A Maldivian guesthouse holiday is a different proposition from a private-island resort, so decide which version you mean before comparing prices.
Both destinations can deliver the tropical holiday you have in mind. The useful question is what you want to do after breakfast: explore somewhere new, walk to another restaurant, take a boat excursion, or stay close to your room and the water? That ordinary day tells you more than photographs of two beautiful beaches.
This Seychelles vs Maldives comparison is a researched editorial assessment, rather than a claim of personal visits. It helps you choose a holiday format; our country guides handle the detailed planning.

Seychelles or Maldives: which holiday fits you?
The recommendations below describe likely trip fit, rather than a ranking of countries. A secluded Seychelles resort and an active Maldivian guesthouse can reverse several assumptions.

| Your priority | Seychelles | Maldives |
|---|---|---|
| A varied week | Compare beaches, forest trails and two island bases. | Choose excursions, diving or a local-island stay if daily variety matters. |
| A resort retreat | Choose the property and beach carefully; exploring remains optional. | A private-island resort can make the accommodation the centre of the holiday. |
| Independent movement | Plan around roads on your chosen island and scheduled inter-island connections. | Check the exact boat or flight connections; nearby islands are not automatically connected. |
| Community life | Consider a base with access to settlements and everyday places. | Compare inhabited-island guesthouses, rather than only private resorts. |
| Snorkelling | Check the specific beach, exposure and local conditions. | Check actual reef access, currents and whether an excursion is needed. |
| Budget control | Price accommodation, meals, local transport and island changes together. | Price the stay model, transfers, meal plan and activities together. |
Choose Seychelles for beaches with somewhere else to go

Seychelles is our stronger starting point if your ideal beach holiday includes time on land. You can build a trip around changing coastal scenery, walking, small settlements and a second island, without making every outing a boat excursion.
That judgment has a practical basis. On Mahé, the Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority describes forest trails in Morne Seychellois National Park. Between islands, Cat Cocos publishes ferry connections linking Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, while the airport authority confirms daily domestic flights between Mahé and Praslin. These are options to plan around, rather than a promise that every connection suits your flight.
The compromise is organisation. A hotel with an appealing beach photograph may be inconvenient for dinners or the places you want to explore. Each island change brings packing, a transfer to the departure point, waiting and another check-in. Choose fewer bases if unpacking once matters more than collecting islands.
Start with the places you want to experience, then choose accommodation that makes those days realistic. That is more useful than booking a beautiful room and trying to fit an ambitious route around it.
Choose the Maldives when the island stay is the main event

For a resort-focused escape, the Maldives makes the choice of property especially consequential. Your room, dining options, beach, reef access and included activities may shape most of the week. A good fit can mean very little daily decision-making; a poor fit is harder to solve by simply walking elsewhere for dinner.
Compare the experience behind the room category. If you imagine swimming from your villa, confirm whether that is permitted and sensible at the particular location. If you want sand outside your door, compare beach rooms as seriously as overwater rooms. Neither category automatically delivers better swimming, privacy or value.
Transfers deserve attention before you pay. Visit Maldives explains that nearby resorts commonly use speedboats, while other journeys involve seaplanes or domestic flights. For a concrete example of the scheduling issue, Amilla states that its seaplane transfers operate in daylight and describes an alternative domestic-flight-and-boat route.
Ask your own accommodation to confirm its transfer method, international arrival cut-off, luggage allowance and late-arrival plan. One resort's deadline does not apply to every island. A short-looking distance on a map is also no guarantee of a straightforward connection.
A Maldives local-island holiday changes the comparison
Comparing all of Seychelles with an expensive Maldivian resort creates a misleading choice. Visit Maldives lists guesthouses, resorts, hotels and liveaboards as different ways to stay, describing guesthouses as a way to experience a local town and its culture.
An inhabited-island base can suit travellers who want everyday surroundings and a choice of local businesses. It still needs research: check the actual swimming beach, building work nearby, excursion arrangements and return transport. Do not assume a low room rate includes the same meals, transfers or facilities as a resort package.
The setting also comes with different expectations. Official travel information asks visitors to dress modestly on inhabited islands and states that individuals cannot import alcohol, while resorts serve it. Ask your guesthouse where visitor swimwear is appropriate and what beach access is available. Choose this holiday for the experience it offers, rather than expecting resort routines at a different price.
Malé offers a capital-city stop

If you want time in Malé, treat it as a capital-city visit, rather than expecting the atmosphere of a small guesthouse island. It can add a different setting to a water-focused trip. Choose a separate island base by its actual neighbourhood, beach and connections; a view of the capital cannot tell you what that stay will feel like.
The best season is not the same in both destinations
For a January-to-March trip with weather as the deciding factor, the Maldives is our more natural starting point. The Maldives Meteorological Service identifies January to March as the northeast dry monsoon, mid-May to November as the wetter southwest monsoon, and April and December as transition months. These are climate patterns, not a guarantee for your dates or a reason to dismiss every wetter-season trip.
Seychelles needs a different reading. Its meteorological authority describes January as the peak rainy period and April as a transition with lighter, variable winds. The southeast trades can bring rougher seas and less pleasant conditions on exposed shores between June and September. A drier month therefore does not automatically mean calmer swimming or smoother ferry crossings.
Compare your actual travel month, the coast or island you are booking and the activities you care about. Keep a flexible day for a boat trip and follow current local advice. A seasonal average cannot establish whether a particular beach is safe to enter.
Couples, families and snorkellers should ask different questions
For couples: privacy or shared exploration?
We would start with a Maldivian resort for a honeymoon centred on private time, meals and the water. We would start with Seychelles for couples who enjoy choosing a new outing and finding somewhere different for lunch. Both destinations can provide either mood; agree on the balance before choosing the room.
For families: compare the daily routine
A family resort may simplify meals and activities, but verify the children's age rules, room layout, supervision and transfer arrangements. Overwater accommodation needs particular consideration with young children. In Seychelles, an accessible base can support varied outings, but travel between beaches and islands still takes energy. Plan around your children's pace, rather than an adult sightseeing list.
For snorkellers: choose access, not a country label
Neither destination wins every snorkelling comparison. Ask whether the reef is reachable from the beach, what experience is expected, where boats enter and whether a guided outing is more suitable. A turquoise lagoon photograph does not establish coral condition or safe access. Wildlife encounters depend on place, season and conditions; no itinerary can guarantee them.
Compare the complete holiday cost
There is no useful universal answer to “Which is cheaper?” without matching dates, accommodation standards and what is included. Compare two complete quotes for the holiday you actually want.
- Accommodation: match room type, occupancy, cancellation terms and every night, including any airport-area stay.
- Transfers: include return boats or flights, road transfers, luggage charges and each island change.
- Food and drink: compare the meal plan with the meals you would buy separately, including drinks and dietary needs.
- Activities: separate complimentary equipment from guided trips, lessons, diving and excursions.
- Taxes and charges: ask for the final payable total and identify anything collected at the property.
- Flexibility: price the effect of a delayed connection and check cancellation conditions.
For independent travellers, Seychelles may offer a more convenient mix of accommodation and spending choices along an exploring route. A Maldivian guesthouse may also offer strong value. These are reasons to compare real options, rather than a claim that one country always costs less.
What could seven nights look like?
These are editorial itinerary examples, not bookable schedules or promises about connections. Adjust them to confirmed arrival times, transport and the pace you enjoy.
Seychelles: four nights on Mahé and three on Praslin
Use Mahé for a settled arrival, beach time and a suitable land outing. Move to Praslin once, then give its beaches and forest scenery room in the plan. Add La Digue only if a confirmed day-trip connection leaves a comfortable return; it is an option, rather than another compulsory stop. If your final international departure requires it, rearrange the nights to finish on Mahé.
Maldives: seven nights at one well-chosen base
Choose a resort or inhabited-island guesthouse that fits your priorities, then build around unhurried beach days and a few suitable excursions. Confirm arrival and departure transfers before committing to the full stay. If an airport-area overnight is necessary, count it within the seven-night budget. A split stay can be rewarding, but needs a confirmed connection and a clear reason for moving.
Seychelles vs Maldives: frequently asked questions
Which is better for a honeymoon?
We favour a Maldivian resort for a retreat focused on the room, lagoon and dining. Seychelles is our starting point for couples who want beaches mixed with exploring. The property and your preferred routine matter more than the honeymoon label.
Is Seychelles cheaper than the Maldives?
Not automatically. Compare the same dates, room standard, meals, transfers, activities and final charges. Include Maldivian guesthouses alongside resorts if that style of holiday appeals; they are different products.
Which should we choose in January?
For the seasonal climate pattern, start with the Maldives: January falls in its meteorological dry season, while Seychelles is in its wetter period. Neither description forecasts your individual holiday.
Can we island-hop in both destinations?
Yes, but plan the actual connections. Seychelles has published ferry links between its main visitor islands. Maldives transfers depend on the particular islands, accommodation and services; geographical proximity is insufficient evidence of a direct route.
Do we need an overwater villa to enjoy the Maldives?
No. Compare beach accommodation and guesthouses as well. Choose the room for its actual beach or water access, comfort, privacy and suitability for your party, rather than assuming the most recognisable photograph is the best holiday.
Sources and planning checks
Official meteorological, tourism, parks, airport and ferry sources are linked beside the claims they support; Amilla supplies a specific resort-transfer example. Research checked on 2 November 2026. Recommendations and sample itineraries are editorial judgments. Confirm current services, conditions and complete booking terms with the relevant provider before paying.
