Hong Kong Visa & Entry Requirements

Check Hong Kong entry requirements for the passport and travel document you will actually use. Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of China with separate immigration arrangements from the mainland and Macao. Your route, transit status and nationality can change the documents required, so use the Immigration Department rather than a general “China visa” summary.
Start with the Official Nationality Table
The Hong Kong Immigration Department visa and entry-permit table identifies the visa-free visit period or advance requirement for each listed nationality or travel-document category. Do not infer eligibility from where you live, where your flight starts or the passport held by another member of your group. Check every traveller, including children.
Read the notes attached to the table as well as the headline period. Some categories have specific transit requirements; Indian nationals generally need to complete successful pre-arrival registration for visa-free visits unless an applicable exemption applies. Use the department’s exact guidance for your circumstances. Visa-free eligibility is not automatic permission to land, and immigration officers decide admission.
What to Prepare Before Arrival
Keep your valid travel document, any required visa or permit, onward or return itinerary, accommodation address and evidence relevant to the purpose and funding of the visit available. Check the passport-validity and returnability requirements that apply to your document and onward destination. Do not substitute a generic six-month rule from an unrelated country for the actual Hong Kong guidance.
If you need a visa, apply early and leave time for supporting-document requests. The official Visit/Transit service page explains eligibility and application arrangements. A booking confirmation is not an approved visa, and a pending application should not be treated as permission to travel.
Transit and Leaving the Airport
Remaining airside, clearing immigration for a city visit and collecting baggage before a separate flight can lead to different requirements. Ask the airline about baggage transfer and terminal procedures, and check immigration guidance for your nationality. Do not assume that a short connection automatically exempts you from all document requirements.
For a stopover, count the time after immigration, luggage handling, transport and the required return to the airport. The Airport Express running time is only one part of that journey. A short layover may be better spent at the airport than on a hurried harbour trip with separately booked legs. See Airports & Transfers.
Mainland China, Macao and Returning to Hong Kong
Travelling from Hong Kong to Shenzhen, Guangzhou or another mainland city involves a separate admission decision. Mainland visa or transit arrangements have their own eligibility, route and onward-ticket conditions. A Hong Kong visit permission does not cover them. Likewise, Macao has its own entry rules.
Check that your document and any visa allow the itinerary you intend, including re-entry where relevant. A train or ferry ticket does not establish immigration eligibility. Allow time for border procedures and do not plan a tight independent connection as if the carriers guaranteed it. For a relaxed first Hong Kong visit, an island day within the territory can be simpler than a cross-border excursion.
Visitor Conditions and Longer Stays
The Immigration Department sets conditions for visitors, including restrictions on employment, business establishment or participation and study. Do not assume a remote-work arrangement or an unpaid activity is permitted simply because no local salary is paid. Check the official permissible-activity guidance or obtain advice for your specific case.
Your permitted stay is determined by your admission conditions, not by the length of your hotel booking. Keep track of the expiry and consult the department before it ends if circumstances change. An extension application is not a guaranteed approval. Accommodation planning for a longer lawful visit is in Longer Stays & Costs.
Final Checks Before You Travel
Recheck official entry information shortly before departure, especially if you have changed your route, travel document or transit arrangements. Airlines may perform document checks before boarding. Save accessible copies securely and keep the original travel document available; a phone photograph alone may not be sufficient.
This page was researched on 24 October 2026. It is a planning guide, not an individual immigration determination. For unusual nationality, document, residence or past-entry circumstances, contact the Immigration Department through its published channels. Do not buy a non-refundable border excursion on the strength of another traveller’s experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a mainland China visa valid for Hong Kong?
Do not assume that it is. Hong Kong has its own visa and entry-permit requirements, determined by nationality and travel document. Check the Hong Kong Immigration Department table.
Does visa-free entry allow me to work?
No automatic employment permission follows from a visitor visa waiver. Read the visitor conditions and permissible activities, and confirm your specific activity with the relevant authority.
Can I leave Hong Kong for a day and return without checking anything else?
Check the destination’s admission requirements and the conditions for your return to Hong Kong before booking. Your document type, nationality and visa entries can matter in both directions.
