Hong Kong Airports & Transfers

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is on Chek Lap Kok beside Lantau, away from the main harbour neighbourhoods. Choose a transfer by the complete hotel journey, the arrival time and your luggage. This guide also explains why West Kowloon trains and cross-border road arrivals require different preparation from a normal airport-to-hotel trip.
Airport to Hotel: Compare the Options
On small screens, scroll the table sideways to compare every column.
| Option | Useful when | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Airport Express | Your hotel connects well with Hong Kong, Kowloon or Tsing Yi station | Last-mile transfer and walking remain |
| Airport bus | A route stops close to your actual accommodation | Traffic, stops and route variations affect duration |
| Taxi | Several people, bulky luggage or a steep final approach | Check capacity and fare conditions; road congestion matters |
| Pre-booked transfer | You need confirmed arrangements or assistance | Read waiting time, flight-delay and meet-point terms |
Use the airport’s official transport overview for current options, including special-needs transport. Compare the final approach, not just the headline rail time. A family with luggage may prefer a direct road journey even when the train is faster between stations.
Airport Express and the Last Mile
The MTR Airport Express timetable gives approximately 24 minutes between Airport and Hong Kong Station, 22 minutes to Kowloon and 14 minutes to Tsing Yi. These are train journey times, not immigration-to-hotel transfer times. Walking to the platform, waiting and reaching the accommodation add to them.
Hong Kong Station is on Hong Kong Island; Kowloon Station is in West Kowloon and is not the same as Tsim Sha Tsui. Locate your hotel and compare the onward MTR, taxi or walk before buying a ticket. With heavy luggage, a long station interchange can erase the apparent convenience of a short final rail journey.
Late Arrivals and Early Flights
Check transport against a realistic time after landing: immigration, baggage and reaching the stop take time. The current timetable is useful, but leave room for a delayed flight and check again on your travel date. If the last train is uncertain, save a viable bus or taxi alternative before departure.
For an early flight, work backwards from your airline’s check-in and baggage deadline, then add the full hotel-to-terminal journey and a disruption margin. An airport or Tung Chung hotel can be practical for an overnight transit, but confirm the shuttle or road connection you actually need. Do not assume a city hotel’s transfer runs at every hour.
Arriving by Rail or from a Land Border
Hong Kong West Kowloon is the high-speed-rail arrival station. It is different from the Airport Express Kowloon Station, although the stations are in the same wider district. Plan identification checks, border formalities, station circulation and the onward journey separately from the train’s advertised running time.
A flight to Shenzhen or Guangzhou is not automatically a simple substitute for arriving at HKG: it can involve mainland admission, a ground transfer and Hong Kong entry. Macao and cross-border road or ferry journeys also have document and checkpoint requirements. Check Visa & Entry and the actual carrier conditions before booking separate legs.
Luggage, Families and Accessible Transfers
Confirm the number of suitcases as well as passengers when booking a vehicle. For wheelchair travel, specify whether you need to remain seated in the wheelchair, the equipment dimensions, luggage and assistance at the meet point. A generic “accessible” label is not a complete booking confirmation.
Save the hotel entrance in Chinese and English, especially if a taxi drop-off is on a different street from the front-desk address. Ask the property about steps, late check-in and where the vehicle can stop. Keep documents, a charger and essential medication with you rather than in a bag you cannot reach during the transfer.
Departure and Disruption Planning
Before leaving the hotel, check the airline’s terminal and check-in instructions and any airport or transport announcement. Hold a little usable cash or an alternative payment method until the trip is finished. Allow time to retrieve stored luggage; a sightseeing itinerary should end before your airport-transfer margin begins.
Severe weather can affect road, rail and air transport in different ways. Follow current operator instructions rather than an old timetable screenshot. If a journey is disrupted, contact the carrier and keep confirmation of changes for accommodation or insurance discussions. Daily local transport planning is covered in Getting Around.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kowloon Station next to the Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry?
No. Airport Express Kowloon Station is in West Kowloon; the Star Ferry pier is on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront. Include a separate onward journey or a substantial walk in your transfer plan.
Does the 24-minute Airport Express time include the trip to my hotel?
No. It is the approximate train time between Airport and Hong Kong Station. Immigration, baggage collection, waiting and the final hotel approach are additional.
Can I land in Shenzhen and enter Hong Kong with the same permission?
Do not assume that. Mainland China and Hong Kong have separate entry arrangements, and the ground route adds a border crossing. Check both destinations for the passport you will use.
