Useful Contacts in Shanghai: Tourism, Consulates & Services
Use a contact according to the help you need: an emergency service for immediate danger, a visitor centre for sightseeing information, a transport operator for a journey and your own consulate for nationality-specific assistance. Old telephone and embassy lists can become misleading, so this page gives a compact verified selection and links the official directories for the full current detail.

The complete tourist service-centre directory provides further district locations. Confirm current opening arrangements if you are making a special journey. Tourist information centres and the international-arrivals one-stop centres described in the payment guide are related visitor services but not necessarily the same desk.
For an international call to an eight-digit Shanghai landline, use +86 21 followed by the local number, omitting the domestic zero. Keep mobile numbers as published. A saved offline address helps if you need to show a destination to station staff or a taxi driver.
Consular Assistance
For a lost passport, emergency travel document or nationality-specific issue, contact your own country’s consular service. The city’s official consular directory is a starting point for locations and switchboards. Check your government’s own consular page before attending; ordinary office numbers and emergency lines have different purposes.
Consular addresses and switchboards can change. Use your government’s current directory for the service relevant to your nationality. An embassy in Beijing and a consulate in Shanghai are also different destinations. Appointments, opening hours and document requirements need an individual current check.
Transport and Booking Problems

For a rail question, prepare the passenger name, departure station, travel date and train number. Never assume that “Shanghai station” means Hongqiao. For an airline or airport question, specify PVG or SHA, terminal, flight number and date. Use the contacts in your actual booking confirmation for a missed service or cancellation.
For a hotel issue, keep the property’s Chinese name and the full booking terms. If a third-party reservation was used, the property and booking platform may have different roles in a refund. Do not send card details or verification codes to an unsolicited caller.
Build a Small Offline Help Note
Save your accommodation address, insurer assistance number, one trusted personal contact and the consular service relevant to your nationality. Keep a protected copy separate from the phone if practical. Let a companion know where the information is stored.
The China Useful Contacts guide provides national context. Return to Travel Essentials for phone, payment and accessibility preparation, or Visa & Entry for the separate question of immigration permission.
Useful Contacts FAQs
Can a tourist information centre replace my consulate?
No. A visitor centre can help with local tourism information; your own consulate handles nationality-specific consular procedures.
Should I use the old consulate addresses in archived guides?
Verify the current address and appointment process with the official consular service first. Do not rely on an archived address or switchboard for an urgent or appointment-based visit.
What information helps with a transport query?
Give the exact airport or station, travel date, service number and booking reference. “Shanghai airport” or “Shanghai station” alone is not precise enough.
